The Battle of Antietam was the single bloodiest day in American history (if you count both Federal and Confederates as American). Combined, the two sides lost over 22,700 dead and wounded. Antietam was considered the first Union victory and allowed Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation and not have it be seen as an act of desperation from a losing, inept Government.
