Well, that's my Sunday afternoon sorted 😀 I've always loved Chase as Fletch and was uncertain about anyone Else playing him. But it was the Jon Hamm version that finally got me to read the novels. And now I prefer Hamm as Fletch, but still love this film as a great Chase comedy.

I have to get one of those Great Lakes t-shirts.

Don’t get me wrong.. I like Chevy Chase.. (though I don’t understand how a fairly large city in Maryland is named for him).. I like his deadpan comedic delivery style.. in this movie.. I like his costumes (though when his cleft chin is covered with a beard.. he’s really hard to recognize)… but with all that said.. for some reason I just don’t enjoy this movie.. I don’t like seeing the dirty beaches and somehow have a hard time following the narrative.. I hear ‘Fletch Lives!’ Is better and I want to try to see that movie before I make a final verdict on the franchise..

<~~Minnesota Boy.. I want the Great Lakes T-shirt as well!

Also.. I tried to visualize watching this as someone who didn’t see it in the 80’s and I afraid I think much of the humor is dated… for someone who doesn’t get the references of the time.. this film more than other 80’s movies..

I didn’t know there was a Hamm version! I really like his work and I’m going to make an effort to see that one!

Spot on bringing up Beverly Hills Cop, Harold Falltermeyer did the soundtrack for both films.

Harvey Lee

Chevy Chase seemed to be everywhere in early 80's pop culture . And I enjoyed his style of comedy as one of the breakout stars from Saturday Night Live he went on to star in quite few good comedies . Namely the National lampoon vacation films And ... Fletch is one of his most well known roles classic Chevy Chase in action Cheers for this C+N 🩶♥️

Larry (Geena Davis) was Moneypenny to Fletch's Bond.

This movie isn't one for referential humor, other than him sometime using aliases that are the names of famous people and fictional characters, and those aren't really 80s specific. I can't think of any jokes you'd have missed just by not knowing the 80s. If you feel lost at times, that's probably just because Fletch is babbling something absurd to confuse the character he's speaking to as part of his technique for BSing his way through situations. You're supposed to be laughing at how befuddled the other characters are, not trying to understand some deeper meaning.

Michael Keenan

That would be great. I love the simple design.

Tarjei

It's not as goofy as Chase's Fletch, but still funny. It adapts the second novel in the series: Confess, Fletch and as such the Fletch movie is technically still cannon. Chase's second outing as Fletch; Fletch Lives wasn't based on any of the novels.

Barry

Vacation, Caddyshack, Fletch, and Spies Like Us are some of the best Chevy Chase films. Any one of them would make a good reaction.
