Got some SlothBeing WIPS!

It's not lewd, but like... damn, is it close~

Anyway, welcome to goblin town! There's goblins up in here! And a heap of trouble too.

So... I've got some options: MC focuses on stealth combatMC focuses on sword combatMC finds a gun that goes rat-tat-tat and uses that

... your pick, really. I don't mind writing it in whatever way! The overall plot for this section remains the same, though I suppose it'll change the end-result a little!

Chapter Sixty-Two

The first goblin showed up near one AM, just as I was really starting to regret my plan to stick around and wait.

The plan wasn’t bad, mind. My objective, in the end, was to be seen as a hero, and you couldn’t be heroic by saving people long before they were in danger.

Was that messed up of me? Waiting until the breach started to save people?

Yeah, a little.

But also, if I didn’t help, I knew exactly how many people would die, so... I figured on the great scale of good vs. evil, me waiting so that people knew that I was the one saving their asses wasn’t all bad.

The first goblin to show up was a bit of a runt. At least, I think. I’d never seen a live one in person, but I’d dragged some bodies out of a portal a few months... from now? Anyway, this one came up to about my waist, no bigger than a seven to ten year old. The goblin had greenish-beige skin, all of it mottled and patterned almost like a natural camouflage.

He... because this dude wasn’t covering up, was only wearing a sash around his waist, and he carried a small wooden club.

The goblin plopped out of the portal, tripped on the way out, then jumped to his feet and stared around. There was intelligence in those little eyes of his. Then malice.

He screeched and ran at the nearest ‘guard’ who was sitting back and not paying attention until the club smacked him in the side.

The blow didn’t have the leverage or weight to hurt too much, I didn’t think, but it sure caused a scene.

People gasped, others backed away.

I stood up, drew my sword, and walked over.

The guard kicked at the goblin, who deftly avoided the strikes, then tried to swipe back with his club.

I stabbed out, intending to skewer the goblin in the neck, but... well, I missed.

“Shit,” I muttered before pulling my sword back and just swiping it through the air.

The edge didn’t land quite right, I could feel the way the blade recoiled, but it was sharp enough that a poor angle didn’t matter all that much. The edge bit into the goblin’s flesh, parting it, and leaking reddish blood all over.

The goblin squealed and stumbled around, falling onto his ass. Which is where he died when the guard opened up with his little SMG and punched a dozen rounds into the goblin.

There was a winging in my ear. Shooting in an enclosed room, even a large one, wasn’t brilliant. Damn, I really needed to get cyberware for my ears.

“Everyone!” I shouted. “Keep calm!”

They didn’t.

Probably should have figured as much, but telling people to chill out didn’t lead to people being chill. There was some screaming, shouting, people rushing back, and then River Rats rushing in.

I saw a few with some better gear, nicer clothes, then looked at D-rankers to them in the way they moved. They came in, saw me, and I tensed up as I felt them preparing spells, or at least preparing their magic for something. It was a weird sensation, kind of like being near a C-ranker normally, only more urgent.

Then they noticed the goblin.

“Shit,” one of them said. “That come out of the portal?”

“Yeah, bossman,” the guard said. “Just popped right out, came swinging at me. Chick with the knife stabbed it and I shot it up.”

Knife? This was a sword, dammit.

“Aight. Did Becky come out?”

The guard shook his head in a hurry and the D-ranker grunted out a few more curses. “We’re going in to check on her, then. Might’ve fallen asleep or something. You know her. Calm the folks down. Maybe pass around some food or something, tell ‘em it’s all under control.”

Hmm. So, in the original timeline, without my interference, two D-rankers would have come out to help. There were four more gangsters in the room too, plus those already here. And they were armed.

That painted a weird picture. If the portal breached, then two D-rankers and a handful of E-rankers ought to be enough to hold it, at least for a while, especially against something like goblins.

So, how had so many people died? Some friendly fire? The panic?

“Thanks for the help, girl,” the ‘bossman’ said. “You can head out with the rest, yeah?”

“No, I’m going in as well,” I said.

“Na-uh,” he replied. “Not about to let that happen.”

I looked him in the eye. “You will, for three reasons. First, because you could use the help of another D-ranker. Second, because you don’t have the right to stop me. And third, because you don’t have the time or energy that it would take to stop me. Besides, I wouldn’t mind going in and killing a few monsters. It’s good experience.”

He stared, then cursed again. “Fuck it. We’re getting Becky and getting out. Probably nothing anyway.”

I shrugged, then wiped the end of my sword clean with a bit of paper towel I had in my pocket (from one of those fried food vendors... it was tasty).

The two D-rankers lined up, then leapt in, and I followed at a more sedate pace. I was getting used to the momentary disorientation of stepping into a portal, and the strange sensation of almost-falling that came with finding my footing on the other side.

The portal world was a... fort? Like, one of those weird Roman ones, made of rows of tree trunks planted into the ground. There were makeshift tents around, and some taller trunks with platforms above them and rope-ladders leading up.

And goblins.

“Shit!” the D-ranker in the lead shouted as he jumped to the side.

I ducked on reflex as something whizzed by. It would have missed me, regardless, but the motion had be jumpy. Then the other D-ranker opened up with an SMG and I found myself running for cover behind a wooden barricade.

There was some dozen or so goblins at the far end of the courtyard. Most of them weren’t armed any better than the one who’d come through the portal. Loinclothes and sticks, but a few had bows and they were shooting back while chittering at each other in whatever language goblins spoke.

I poked my head around the other side, confirming that the goblins out in the open were the only ones.

The D-ranker ran empty in seconds, then ran to cover himself.

Other bossman? He grunted something, then reached a hand around cover and a long, pitch-black spear appeared in the air and hovered there for a moment. Then it shot out, stabbing through three goblins at once before just... disappearing and leaving an inch-thick hole in all three.

Void magic? Damn. Didn’t expect to see that.

“Dammit, dammit,” the second D-ranker shouted. “I’ve got one mag left!”

“Then you should have brought more!” bossman shouted.

I decided that I might as well make myself useful and switched my sword to my left hand and pulled out my revolver. I poked around the corner, took aim, and fired into the middle of the pack.

The goblins went into a full panic, running around like chickens on spotting a fox. Some ran towards the bossman ranker, but he stepped out and met the first two with fists covered in smokey black magic. It seemed to melt the skin off the monsters with each strike, sending them down in a hurry.

The second D-ranker reloaded, then took fire again, smaller bursts this time.

It wasn’t too long before the goblins were dead or fled, but something told me that those that ran back into the caves-turned-fort we were in front of were going to spread the news, and that wasn’t good for us.

“You guys, how deep did you go when clearing out the dungeon’s opening?” I asked.

Bossman glanced back at me, saw me reloading my revolver with my sword tucked under one arm, and tsked. “Just this one room.”

I paused. “Seriously?” Standard operating procedure was always three rooms deep. One to guard, one as a buffer, and one more because it was stupid not to. “No traps? Not blockades?”

“What are you on about?” the other D-ranker asked.

I shut my eyes for a second. “Fine, whatever. You two have names?”

“Josh,” bossman said.

“Franklin,” the other D-ranker said. “And you?”

“Deadline,” I replied. “Just call me Deadline. Now, let’s find that friend of yours, if they’re still alive, and see how deep we can go.”

I was getting the unfortunate impression that this wasn’t a portal that would be easy to clear solo. Not with swarms of goblins running around.

I’d need a better gun. Or I’d need to learn how to use my sword a lot better.

Stealth combat is ALWAYS the most effective go to, for a solo operative. See the Skyrim stealth archer phenomenon. That being said, sometime stealth simply is not enough, or isn't an option, and you need to be able to hold your own, so for that she needs another weapon. Still her skills would tend towards precision so a sword or handgun would be better than any kind of rapid firing weapon. Personally I would expect her to have a mix of the two. Swords are reliable, and don't have ammo concerns, there are likely far easier to find in portals as well without leaving a paper trail. But sometimes you just need a big hand cannon to penetrate some armour for a safe distance. I would also expect her to carry a knife, for silent monster takedowns, since its easier to use. Honestly, there are solid justifications for just about anything, but I would be very sad to see her going guns blazing. Now despite me glazing stealth earlier, its worth reiterating that while its extremely effective, (If you can ambush, you should, and if you can do it without alerting more enemies you DEFINATELY should), its also very situational. Excellent swordplay on the other hand is useful in a much greater variety of situations. I suppose which is better depends on what spells she has access to in order to supplement them. For example, A void spell that makes her more stealthily will only do so much if she's already been detected.

SDCard

Thanks for the chapter! She's already pretty damn good with a gun, stealth seems like it would be pretty useful to master - she's already made excellent use of it when meeting the lady at that restaurant

Mirthfilled

When guns exist and work, they should really be used, although being good at stealth is always worth practicing and swords are badass…

trufflezz

Sword combat, I feel like swords are so cool and yet hardly ever appreciated. Yes a gun at this level would probably work but like you have a magic sword and don't need to worry about ammo. Plus what's more heroic looking, person effortlessly wading through enemies with a sword and finishing them off or a person just shoot a few mooks and then heading off?

Ashley Patterson

Sword for sure. She already did stealthy, and learning to use that sword will make her look badass.

Raistlin

I think learning how to fight with swords would ve the most interesting option.

GryphonKnight

All 3! Have the MC try to clear it with stealth, sword and gun, then never tell the reader which worked best! Seriously A Poll would take too long because you are blazing through these chapters

Robert Mullins

Why have a blade if not to use it? I say it's a good time for live weapons training. That said, it's a balance. Stealth would have the least variance between loops and is easiest to pull off a perfect run with but also teaches her the least amount of transferable skill. Learning to fight properly makes for more repetitions in the short term but less in the long term.

GryphonKnight

Not really a lewd She could be stripping down to her bathing suit for a swim in an indoor pool Definitely sexy though

Robert Mullins

Also, everyone knows that style points for monsters is one-slice, one-kill. As compared to humans, where instead style is showing that nothing they can do is effective. To be fair, a good systematic dismantling of a large foe can at times be more satisfying than a single attack.

Wtcher

What kind of spaces will she be encountering? Clear lines of sight, moderate distances? Gun. Tiny twisty corridors? That gives sword a chance. That said, she's running with a couple of loud-ish people. Maybe they'd make a great distraction while she flanks the host.

GryphonKnight

Now I have lewd thoughts running through my mind But having her clear the goblins with a magical strap on sounds like Dungeon Crawl Carl level humor (or Dungeons and Dalliances)

RavensDagger

hmm, yeah, mostly the inside of an old fortress/cave system.

Robert Mullins

Another reason stealth is a bad idea long term. Is that it's ineffective during large portal breaks. Since the chaos would remove a lot of predicability and taking the time to sneak just leads to more deaths.

Kitbashjay

Sword. Its a good way to impress the crowds and future adoring fans.

Robert Mullins

Most importantly, you can't aura farm stealth because nobody will notice you being awesome.

Nathan

Swords. I can see it now, a perfect loop where she systematically dissembles and dissects every enemy piece by piece in a portal. Having said that though, there’s something about a big ass handgun or revolver as a backup plan that gets me going.

Orchamus

Sword 🗡️, a one hander so you can still use a gun and use stealth when needed, but a sword/long knife is always better to have then not have in such a world.

MightyMouse

Swordswoman Deadline ftw :3

E. William Brown

Sword & pistol is a great combo for chaotic, close-quarters combat. The gun is much deadlier than the sword, but the sword lets you fend off melee attacks and it doesn't need to reload. So shoot goblins when possible, hack and slash when necessary, and with practice you end up looking like a badass while doing it. Of course, learning to use a sword takes about a hundred times more practice than learning to use a gun. So right now she should find that she gets most of her kills with the gun, and the sword is mostly just something she can use to fend off goblins long enough to shoot them.

TeaGeek

If she’s looking to impress, walking in and systematically taking out goblins one slash to kill (or disable and then take down) with the gun just used to knock out the mages/archers/boss to show off skill and pragmatism. Hard to learn to use 1-handed sword skills quickly, though.

Genebeep (LadyLinq)

I don't know, I think that may cross the line and be pretty lewd. lol I vote sword combat! She and Ojou could be sword partners!

FallingToAsh

I like the idea of a combination sword/gun line, where she gets up to at least basic proficiency with the sword for the goblin grunts who probably don’t have sophisticated fighting styles but she probably doesn’t have enough bullets for, and the gun (or guns) let her bridge the gap against whatever goblin “officers” are in this fort, who probably can’t be taken down with just the kind of sword skill she’s willing to grind in one night.

Nathaniel Cloud

I like the idea of stealth personally; it fits with my image of badass perfect runs the best. Could mix it with some sword, though; maybe some Sekiro vibes?

Nathaniel Cloud

Although, as noted below, she can't show off when she's stealthy, so it depends on how much of an audience she has at any point

M. Whitmer

Personally I've seen Raven write plenty of stealth and gun scenes. Lets go with a sword combat style for now in this series.

HikinBear

The new picture is great, even though the artist succumbed to to adding cup sizes for effect. Still, very sexy pose. Guns can’t be beat for ranged weapons, but there is always the ammo issue. It sounds like a high number of goblins means LOTS of ammo. Swords are difficult to use at the best of times, dual welding means she sucks at both. For the biggest impact, she should try using the sword with both hands and dual weld only when needed reducing the need for ammo. It also has the biggest impact on growing the ‘Brand’ of Deadline. After dozens of reloads she’ll make it look badass!

Tierhon

Well she does have a sword and needs to learn to use it, but I think starting with a "try this then that" for the first few loops till she gets it mapped out and realizes she hadn't used her sword yet. Edit: I should have read the chapter before responding to your comments at the top. Yeah, time to learn the sword, and a few shots with the Bastion-Krieger Model 2088c for a little bit of overkill/fun.

conantheimp

I'm sorry but the longer I stare at the art the more convincing I am that one breast is significantly larger than the other. Otherwise excellent art and tyftc

Ink

She has a fancy enchanted sword, it seems like it would be helpful to learn how to actually use it.

Littlesavage

Wow! Really like the image. She's lookin good! That said, let her rock the sword. Big gun for big enemies or long range attacks for mage/archers. She should definitely have more ammo for the next loop tho. She can be stealth as needed, but she's rolling with a crew right now, get the xp she needs for that sword. U already have SCS with a spray & pray MC. Time to mix it up. Maybe get her something to handle the mobs when they're too big? Although, now I got an image from Ballerina in my head. (The John Wick offshoot). Her duct taped gun & knife combo. As an icon. Hilarious.

ScopaVigalad

Thank you for the chapter. For me it would be swords, though a british officer style with sword and revolver like during the indian mutiny sounds nice in the short term. But seeing as she has time magic and possibly access to void the prospect of having 'lingering' slashes and the like once she progresses with her magic seems too cool to me to pass up to not have her at least somewhat focus on swords.

Brian

I'm kinda liking the mix of sword and crazy overpowered revolver. Means she has to make the gunshots count, and if she gets decent at the sword she doesn't have to worry about ammo. Maybe she can go full Cyberpunk 2077 have swords that pop out her arms in the future. Maybe after losing an arm in an incident.

RavensDagger

Wouldn't she just... reload to pre-arm loss?

Shaoraka

Not if she can't be sure to repeat a success. Like, 99% of the time she would repeat, but if she wins and she's reaaaally not sure sure can pull it off again she might need to keep the run.

elijah pickett

Stealth! If Ghost in the City has taught me anything, stealth is awesome!

elijah pickett

Swords are of course, super cool a s well.

AuraMaster

This chapter isn't in the Collection, fyi
