Hmm... I think... one more chapter? And then the Epilogue? If you guys have any ideas for what should happen next in SCS, then I'd legit love to know them. I really don't want to stop the story, but SCS is the weird kind of narrative that doesn't have a specific end goal. It's all long arcs and episodic things. And I don't know where to go from here, exactly. I've got some ideas, some scenes, some things I want to explore, but... yeah, I'm open!

Interlude - Balls

“Oh, I think it’s starting,” Joshua said. He shifted in his seat a little next to her, taking in the stage up and ahead of them.

When the Nut Punchers had been invited to this thing, she’d decided that they really didn’t have too much of a choice but to attend. Zoe and her friends were always down to kick anyone that didn’t know where they belonged, but in the grand hierarchy of things, Samurai sat at the very top.

She hadn’t been expecting the event to be so... corporate.

The badge around her neck, the plush but not very comfortable seats, the little finger foods and opportunities to mingle. Even the location only felt vibrant in the way that only very corporatized event-locations did. All they were missing were a few banners and a poorly-done tech demo and this would be the ideal corpo thing.

Zoe crossed her arms and leaned back into her seat, eyes scanning the crowd. There were all sorts here, but she supposed that was kind of the point. The place smelled. Sweat, the faint stink of some inhalable drugs, gunpowder, lots of body spray.

God, she could go for a good beating right about then. Smack some fool upside the head, maybe.

What even was the point of all this?

The Nut Punchers were doing fine. Better than fine, even. The government had cut costs on all of its security stuff. The cops were less funded than ever before. Corporate security was still high, but even that had taken a kick in the nads.

The global incursion, and more importantly to New Montreal, the previous incursion just a week prior, had turned things on their head. Now anyone that wanted a job could get one, easily. They just had to be willing to risk life and limb, but that was a small cost.

Better yet, the reconstruction had started already. Walls were going up, buildings were being repaired. New construction had stalled out, but there were so many maintenance projects going on that anyone even mildly inclined towards manual work had plenty to find.

That meant more credits in people’s pockets. The corps and government had gone from being penny-pinchers to suddenly dumping trillions into the economy as if it was going out of style.

Maybe it was.

A lot of people had felt like the end times were near. She’d felt that too. The mega building they lived in was a few blocks from the edge of the city, but that didn’t mean that she and the other Nut Punchers hadn’t done the math on how long it would take a wave of aliens to make it to their doorstep.

Now though? Things were looking up.

It was always like this. Something big would happen. A bubble would burst, the corps and government would reel, and in their absence, her sort of people, the marginalized, the criminally inclined, the fun and cool sort of person, would step up and gain a bit more. Then the corps would find their footing and the status quo would return, only worse now that they were chasing something new.

She crossed her arms and glared at the empty stage. What a waste of her damned time.

“Look,” Joshua said. He pointed to something off to the side of the stage just as the curtains moved and a woman stepped on. She was a Samurai, obviously. It wasn’t that Stray Cat woman, but another cat-themed one. Tall, darker armour, cat ears, lots of hips swaying in the way she moved.

The Samurai crossed the stage, dragging an unfolding chair behind her. Somehow, she made just walking look dangerous. There was something in the mix of carefree and graceful in her motions that felt off in a way that had Zoe’s hackles rising.

“Who is that one?” she asked.

Pete’s eyes lit up for a moment. “Nya,” he said.

“Nya? Seriously?” she asked. Her estimation of the woman dropped a few notches.

“Japanese Ronin. Samurai for a long while. Also known as the Nightmare of Kanagawa, the ocean-side cat, and Nya the... indomin-nya-ble. One of the top enforcers of the Asian Kiretsu samurai group. Ranked six hundred and twelve on the worldwide Samurai popularity charts.”

Zoe hummed, arms still crossed. So, a big shot in the samurai world? Top one thousand was a big deal, at least as far as popularity went. There wasn’t always a link between how popular a Samurai was and how dangerous they were, but the exceptions didn’t prove the rule. The rest of her titles sounded dangerous too.

Nya shuffled around, then sat down. She gestured to the side, and there was suddenly an entire guitar in her hands.

Samurai tech? Teleportation? Miniaturization? Had she just bought that? Zoe couldn’t tell, but as far as shows of force went... well, some morons wouldn’t catch the implication, but she did. If Nya could summon a guitar, not much stopped her from summoning something else.

Then Nya started playing, and she was alright.

It wasn’t anything too special, just the weird cat-eared woman plucking at some strings, playing a fast, complex, but still not too complicated piece without lyrics or accompanying music.

It was a distraction, and it worked. Nya played for a couple of minutes, keeping attention on herself while people were clearly scurrying around in the back.

There were a lot of Samurai here. She’d seen a few herself, had talked to one of them directly, something that few people would get to claim.

The entire room hushed, and Zoe found herself sitting straighter in her seat.

Then Stray Cat strutted onto the stage.

The woman walked with extreme confidence, a level of surety in herself that Zoe wasn’t sure anyone could match, not with any great ease. There was a microphone on a stand in the centre-front of the stage, and Stray Cat casually moved over to it, then pulled it off the stand.

“This thing on?” she asked before tapping the top twice. It filled the room with twin, bassy thumps. “Huh, guess so.”

This wasn’t the level of professionalism Zoe might have expected from someone working in a big corp. And that was worrisome. Corps acted in a certain way. Oh, sure, they tried to stand out as their own thing, but for the most part, a corp was always very easy to read. They’d put their own interests first, and in the end that made them predictable, as long as she could figure out what those interests were.

Usually it was credits. They didn’t chase purer pursuits like the Nut Punchers did.

Strat Cat took in a deep breath, one that the mic picked up. “The city’s been bleeding. Kinda feels like we all collectively took a kick to the ass, but honestly, it’s not all that bad.”

Zoe blinked. Weird start, but okay.

“Look, I like New Montreal. It’s got its problems, like a lot of them, but it’s also home to me, it’s home to the people I care about. So, seeing us pull out of that last incursion without suffering too much? That was nice. Seeing up tough out the global incursion right after? Cool. We’re doing alright. Phobos? Nailed that fucker. Lost a few good Samurai and a lot of normal folk because of it, but it could have, and would have been worse, so I can’t say I’m not happy with the end result.”

A casual reminder that Stray Cat and her allied Samurai still had a kilometre-long railgun somewhere in the countryside to the north of the city?

Everyone kinda knew the approximate location, but a lot of effort was going into hiding it. Like, a lot. No one could share photos, GPS maps didn’t show anything, and talking about the place where the Big Gun was located led to run-ins with some Samurai AI that was prowling the net.

Apparently they were real polite, so that was neat. There was speculation that it was Grasshopper’s AI.

“Look, I’m not here to play at being a saint. I know that everyone here is part of a gang, and while some of you might hold some moral high-ground and your whole schtick is that you’re keeping your own safe--and I can respect that, I also know that some of the people in this room aren’t what anyone would call ‘good.’”

Zoe tensed. There were a few directions the Samurai could go with that.

If she was willing to shoot the mayor on live TV, then wouldn’t it be a coup to kill the leaders and representatives of a few hundred gangs all at once?”

“I don’t care,” Stray Cat continued. “Well, that’s not true. Actually, it’s so not true that I dragged all of you here tonight. Right, sorry, I’m beating around the bush here, and not in a fun way. What I mean to say is that I don’t care too much about you guys partaking in a bit of crime. Our legal system is a mess, the judicial system... Do we even have one? And the corps make anything that annoys them a crime anyway, so whatever. What I do care about is those of you pushing things a little too far.”

Ah, there was the other shoe.

“So, here’s the rules. From now on, if you push things too far, I’ll come knocking. Same rules as the corps, actually, but there are more of you, and this entire show couldn’t just be an email. Now, you might be asking yourself what that means. What’s too far. I decide what too far is. Right now, too far is kidnapping people off the street and forcing new cyberware on them. Too far is enslaving people. Sex trafficking. Basically... anything to do with minors. Mostly though, too far is making the city worse.”

Zoe worked her jaw. On the surface this was a wild claim, but it had some degree of merit.

“Right now, New Montreal is doing well. Like, crazy well compared to some other places. We’ve got a huge crop of new Samurai who kick ass, we’ve got some old-timers here that are vaguely helpful, and we’re not starving. Ideally, I’d like to make this place better. The corps want something vaguely similar, since better means more profitable, the government, once it gets its head out of its ass, will probably want the same. So, that leaves you lot.”

Stray Cat walked over to the edge of the stage and overlooked them all.

“Don’t make things worse.”

I’d like to see Cat do a bit more Samuraing so maybe something like a beach invasion with Antithesis coming from the sea I feel like that could last a few arcs

Jalil Hayes

I wouldn't mind seeing that either, or having to save another city like Burlington that was a cool little arc. Oh and we need more myalis trolling.

Thomas Heaton

I’d love to see her get the next tier of catalog and do some bonkers shit. But more concretely she can do a world tour, unintentionally growing her global rank in the process (maybe despite her attempts to the contrary

Cyrus McEnnis

Hmmm. Exploring the world outside of Canuckistan might be fun - a trip to the verdant hellscape that I assume Nouvelle Zealand has turned into might be nice. Otherwise - infrastructure is a decent hook. Cat's already got her paws in water treatment - obvious escalations on the essentials of life would be dabbling in food, providing shelter, guaranteeing free intertubes, or free prawn for all. Actually free porn would be a decent hook to bring whatshertits, that sex bot that got emancipated, back into the story.

Thanks for the chapter! I'm not sure about plans for future volumes, having another big incursion so soon seems like it would be unlike... I'll be honest, I love the story and have read it all multiple times, but this particular volume felt a bit lost to me, like it wasn't sure which direction to go

Joshua Gunty

In my totally unbiased opinion I think you should pivot to following the Nut Punchers full time. A real answer though is I think if you want to continue the story you should be a bit more ambitious. Cat has been hanging out at the same relative power level for quite some time now, a lot of what initially drew me to this story was the LitRPG element of "kill the bad things, level up in power" and lately she's mostly been leveling her political power (which is interesting too, just not what hooked me). I'd love to see her ascend to the upper echelon of Samurai. Agree with others that getting out of New Montreal (she's proven herself a leader and a fixer, other nations could probably use some of that) would be fun. Even more ambitious than that would be humanity having proven themselves particularly good at stamping out the plants might get an invite to the intergalactic stage to take the fight to the Antithesis where they came from. Big time Samurai purchasing Imperial Cruiser equivalents and Cat & company going on a space adventure would be some very fertile new ground to write a couple of books about imo.

Joshua Gunty

I think to get a really satisfying end to SCS id want to have an end to the Antithesis threat and I don't think that's happening on Earth. All of Earth's Samurai joining an intergalactic collective of other chosen defenders to wage a final war would be some wild stuff. Though maybe thematically a bit outside of what you've written the story to be so far haha

Narf

I like the idea of doing a little excursion, see a bit more of the world and how they are doing. Especially with Cat saying in this chapter how New Montreal is doing comparatively splendidly, despite being so dystopian, I'd like to see how some other places in the world are faring. It would also be a good reason to get some more use out of Cat's new toys. Both the Bastion and the new mechs have seen rather little real action. Something like a cry for help by a region beset by Antithesis that Cat is responding to, maybe with Gomorrha and one or two other somewhat experienced Samurai. Proper hot combat drop with the Bastion coming in all guns blazing, battles in the air, on the ground and in the water. Work for all the mechs and mech drones to do. Maybe something like that? And when the work is done we can get a beach chapter ^_^ I don't think infrastructure / city building is the right angle for Cat. Not anymore than she is doing right now, where she has identified a problem and cares to see it solved, but more like kicking the arses of people who should fix it into gear rather than working on something herself.

Chase

Aliens! Obviously. Earth has passed some minimal survival threshold and it's advanced enough for some of the proper fleet elements to arrive. After all, they are just the vanguard. Kat and co are recruited to help out some worlds actually struggling or whatever. More and bigger antithesis threats. (Teleportation though to avoid needing to live on these worlds.)

Manfre

Considering I'm only here for SCS, I'd also hate for you to stop writing it. There are a LOT of outstanding plots and a lot of places you could take the story. For example: 1) There's just been a global incursion. You've made it clear other places aren't as well off as New Montreal. The entire world is available to Cat to work with against the aliens. As folks have mentioned already, the litRPG style is appealing. She's a Tier1 Samurai. How about we get to Tier2. Then Tier 3 and so on? 2) The local situation is stable in New Montreal; but there's a TON of area to play in. You've just established the group of "newbie" Samurai working as a group to effect change. There's nothing stopping you from expanding on that. With a dystopian corp-centric universe, there's a lot of folks who are fucking around and need to find out. 3) Cat and her "team" of Samurai just worked with two major organizations of international Samurai. The potential there is endless. Whether that is them asking for help or whether Nya needs the team for something is up to you; but there's several books of potential alien fights, political intrigue, and Samurai politics open to you. 4) You've got a bunch of kittens who are growing up and have places to be and things to do. The interactions within Cat and Lucy's interpersonal relationships with them open dozens of options for you. Far beyond, "should we go to a dog park" imo. 5) As someone else mentioned, Lucy's growing power and authority are a critical thread you need to be using. That alone could fill an entire book.

Docnox

Wheres the tyrant samurai? Wheres the guy that saw governments refuse to act against a meteor and decide no more. Its a means to an end but Cat doesn’t need Attila up in here. Theres gotta be places remote enough that have gone unchecked for too long and really ballooned into mega hives. Wheres the corp that is doing all the bad guy stuff competently? Like successfully taking out samurai and jacking their stuff or manually installing hives in their competitors buildings. The goal for Cat should eventually be complete elimination of antithesis presence on earth. And then beyond. She’s played small time for too long.

Corvid

The slice of life stuff has been a blast, but I think it would be fun to have an abroad arc or something. Cat's got the bastion and her little injustice league going, having them head off to do something for a bit would be neat. Maybe not too far from the city since she just made the whole grand decree thing, but a cleanup tour around parts of NA. Although going to another country for a bit of stylish alien fighting would be an excuse for someone to fuck around enough to find out when they get back. Unless cat buys enough drones beforehand to have a paw-lice force stay behind. On that note, I wonder how many cat drones are just out there floating around un-destroyed still. Funny interlude idea could be a snippet of Myalis taking a spare nanosecond to mess with all the drones and have them doing cat things around town or something.

G_Man_No_99

And there is the Corp that was experimenting with antithesis that been going on in a few fan fics of this setting that cat could get In on

M R

We need more fighting and Cat really needs to grow more as a character and as a fighter. I’d love to see more of the actual kittens and maybe one of them could become a vanguard and you could always do stories of the other vanguard you have introduced in the story. Maybe you could even do more backstory for the world.

SqrlyGrly

So lacking in ambition. Lucy shall rule the world.

Cyrus McEnnis

That's ok. I mainly suggested focusing on the hierarchy of needs to make the porn "joke".

POtato

I feel like it's time for this cat to wander. Maybe a small time skip to finish school, then Cat can step out and we can see a higher tier of Samurai

Melody Haren Anderson

More fighting, but maybe another "on the road" loan if there's issues elsewhere?

White Neko Knight

This feels like a good time to set up a longer ark. Something 3 books long or so that gets accomplished while Cat, Lucy, and the Kittens really grow into their new lives. There's Corps and Politicians that might not like how strong Lucy and the Kittens are growing, and think they might be able to get away with having Lucy assassinated. Something that shows How the more corrupt corps are managing to stay powerful even with all the Samurai around to keep them from going to far. Then there's the fact that earth just delivered a massive blow to the Antithesis. I doubt we'd see a moon sized mass thrown at the solar system any time soon. A Antithesis mass the size of a small state or a large Island might be appropriate level of escalation.

kitnote

Cat needs a tail (Myalis trickery or not). Cat on tour would be awesome too. there is still a possibility of the norther push mentioned in book 6. The mentioned therapy ai would make a good side story, maybe a bit of a look at Cat's past.

White Neko Knight

To simplify things. 1) The growth of Lucy, Cat, and the Kittens. 2) Push back from the skilled and competent Evil Corps. 3) Antithesis escalation. 4) Samurai conflict/politics? A lot of Fan Fics seem to enjoy introducing a few Bad eggs. We doubt the Protectors would ever choose someone harmful to humanity. But harmful to humanity has a lot of wiggle room with how people might act. 4.5) Like a samurai that goes full Iron womb and starts pumping out genetically enhanced humans to survive this new age. 5) Oh! More Stuff! Buy things! UPGRADES! ya spend thrift lol. At the very least more Fabricators for the Kittens. They'd make a great SAR group. 6) The Return of the Mars Samurai.

Matt Cannon

Seems Cat going on tour is popular. The army could help with clearing out and taking control of the area around NM, only for that to lead to Xat realizing the army and the PMCs are quietly using her as a distraction while they take total control of the areas liberated. This is leading to the next big thing: social revolution! You've already droped a few hints about this, now lets go see how a dystopian cyber punk metropolis handles major social unrest. And why does Cat have to deal with this? All the experianced Vanguard are scattered across the solar system. Mars had the biggest extraterrestrial hive, but not the only one. High tier vanguard are the only ones that can reach Jupiter or Venus to start burning those hives before another Phobos happens. I'm imagining an epilogue scene where an officier at the big gun hears a screen start beeping, he takes a look at it, and mutters "oh shit". The big gun was connected to so many sensors and has Protector grade processors it can detect hives growing on other planets. This means none of the vanguard that could help a social revolution deescalate are around, and pits Cat against her biggest enemy: other people. Its always a challenge with powerful characters, how do you threaten them or write a compelling story? Cat may not have much to worry about but her kids and Lucy are far more vulnerable. And the antithesis aren't gonna let dem hummies have a time out while we overthrow the government lol

Clinton Walsh

This is my strongest suggestion. I would go back to book one and see what seeds were planted that the story hasn't seen grow yet. One thing I remember if the to of my head is it talked about how they have only faced the scouting parties. So maybe send an elite landing party to a neighboring city to New Montreal. One random thought. You could do something like Millenial Mage where the majority of people know what it takes to become a samurai. But even most samurai don't know that they can "evolve" to a new level. We've only met a few top 1,000 after all

phillip page

You might have cat help with setting up a colony ship to start humanity's spread to a new world. After all the AI have hinted several times that using certain weaponry while all of her race are stuck on a single planet is a bad idea.

Riv

Inspired by...other media... Some antithesis mutation where they become a semi-sentient thread. That could tail onto higher tier samurai shenanigans without making it just bigger and more aliens. Also maybe setup Lucy on a stronger politics arc. Strong arm the family with the kittens...and of course more of other samurai especially our favorite nun

Clinton Walsh

Also, please don’t continue writing Stray Cat unless you know where you want things to go. Watching an author write empty chapters while they try to find the story is hard and usually makes for terrible writing.

Bryan Jackson

Whichever plot you decide to go with, my suggestion would be to speed the passing of time up a little. It feels like poor Cat has been through years of hell but it's only been, what, 4 months or so since she initialized? Poor girl needs some off days :(

fleatingday

Long ago their was talk about a group trying to remove the kittens (orphans) from cats dubious legal care. With a new election likely on the way to i could see a smear campaign against cat by coporations who want to mitigate her influence. Using the gang meet up as another barb i could see cat being paranoid and driven in a corner. Even more so if the kittens (organization) are payed by a corp to give a bad face. This could blow back on the school and lucy. Just a small list, but i do think we need to see antithesis more so maybe this idea is a back burnner.

fleatingday

I also remeber talk about venus having a potential hive at one point so even if you want a break before bringing it in its their.

fleatingday

Cat really has no stable income. I dont know how much she still has ,but maybe she will have to deal with corps to maintain their lifestyle thus shenanigans begin. Also learning how samurai and the family prepare in the downtimes would be great. Does the family send investigation team and request samurai to help those teams. Are certain samurai requested to reinforce defenses. You could also delve into the group that has stolen samurai tech and have abducted cateater and the girl who i drawing a blank on name. Rule of 3 baby.

fleatingday

The dupont sisters might have pollitical adversaries because of dad. She is supposed to be looking out for the newbs so their a story. We have seen that assains do exist that target samura from your history briefs. Cat, the dupont and their allies can be targeted.

fleatingday

Refugees with new montreal being well off. migration of regular joes, corporation, and dissedents is inevitable. Also in the dissedent catagories. If all it takes is a piece to create a monster than what about a group that hates a corp or corps and sets up hives to destroy them damn the collateral.

Anonymouse

I know I’m a bit late to add my thoughts, but Cat started as a stealth specialist, yes? She hasn’t really done very much with that lately. Stealth specialists were mentioned to be something Samurai didn’t go for often, so perhaps another stealth specialist bites it and Cat gets a call asking for her to finish what they were doing. Also, given that Cat actually has a space capable ship now, perhaps something up in 0G? I bet Cat would have fun tossing grenades around when there’s no “down” though I also guarantee she comes out of that lightly crisped because she didn’t quite think of it.

Anonymouse

Oh! Speaking of space! Perhaps someone or something tries to mess with the aperture for The Big Gun up there! With all the relatively new orbital samurai tech from the Phobos incident, I guarantee there’s going to be corporations trying to sniff around, and I wonder if there might be sneaky spaceborne antithesis that could infiltrate a station and start a hive in it?

Devin Jones

Yes, this! I have been waiting for Chekhov's teleportation necklace ever since she gave it to Lucy. Unless you casually mention that she did the same or similar for the kittens.
