1st generation of Kpop was groups that debuted between 1996 - 2002 like Fin.K.L. and S.E.S. These groups were before my time of being a kpop fan but I've heard a few songs from that generation. 2nd generation of Kpop was groups that debuted between 2003 - 2011. The big name girl groups of that generation: 2NE1 (2009-15, 2024-25), 4Minute (2009-16), After School (2009-15, 2021), Apink (2011-present), Brave Girls (2011-13, 2016-18, 2020-23), Brown Eyed Girls (2006-15, 2019), Davichi (2008-present), f(x) (2009-16, 2019), Girl's Day (2010-15, 2017-18), Girl's Generation (2007-17, 2021-22), Kara (2007-15, 2022-present), Miss A (2010-13, 2015), Secret (2009-14, 2026), Sistar (2010-17), T-ara (2009-17, 2020-2022, 2024-present) and Wonder Girls (2007-17). This was the generation that started the Korean Wave as the music spread to other countries around the world, especially in East Asia & Southeast Asia. This was also the generation that was active when I got introduced to kpop and pretty much all of those groups and even some of the smaller ones like Nine Muses, Rainbow, Rania, Dal Shabet & Stellar are still on my playlist. 3rd generation of Kpop was groups that debuted between 2012-2017. The big name girl groups of that generation (which were the first to debut after I started listening to kpop): AOA (2012-19), Blackpink (2016-present), BOL4 (2016-2020), EXID (2012-20, 2022, 2024-25), GFriend (2015-21, 2024-25), I.O.I. (2016-17, 2026), Mamamoo (2014-24, 2026), Momoland (2016-23, 2025-present), Oh My Girl (2015-present), Red Velvet (2014-present) and Twice (2015-present). This was the generation that exploded globally as kpop starting becoming more mainstream in the west. And yes, most of these groups are all over my playlist. The divide between 4th generation and 5th generation of Kpop is kind blurry, but the closest consensus is that 4th gen was from 2018-mid-2023 and 5th gen is from mid-2023-present. The big name 4th gen girl groups are: Aespa (2020-present), I-dle (2018-present), Itzy (2019-present), Ive (2021-present), Iz*One (2018-2021), Kep1er (2022-present), Le Sserafim (2022-present), New Jeans (2022-2025), Nmixx (2022-present), STAYC (2020-present). This is the first generation where a lot of the groups didn't really hit for me. I was firmly in my Blink, Once & Moomoo era at this point. The big names of 5th gen are Babymonster (2023-present), IIllit (2024-present) and Hearts2Hearts (2025-present). I am very firmly in my Monstiez era right now.
