“You can hide your faces, erase your tracks, and silence your spells. The Weave will still lead me straight to you.”

Hey everyone!

Recently, I held a poll on my social media for the Hunters’ Tournament. The winner was promised their own statblock, along with an additional set of related content!

And that is how I present to you the champion of the poll, the Mage Hunter! 🛡️

This enemy is designed to torment spellcasting characters in several different ways. In addition to his own abilities, he carries three unique magic items: a spell-devouring shield that absorbs magic, heals its wielder, and can create an antimagic field; a spear that breaks the concentration of its targets; and a suit of armor that accelerates the wearer’s body, granting an additional turn in critical situations. Each of these items will also be released separately for subscribers, with full descriptions and printable cards! 🔥

The Mage Hunter also has a special Cinematic Action that activates when he is pushed into danger. It works like a short cutscene in a video game, adding extra drama and flair to the battle without taking away anyone’s turn. ⚔️

I hope you enjoy this enemy, because I rarely create opponents at this level of power. If you like this kind of content, I would love to return to this format again in the future! Have a wonderful weekend, everyone! ❤️

Holy *cow*, this is cool! 😲 My only concern is that the Runic Harpoon attack has a higher minimum damage than the Runic Spear attack; was that intentional or a mix-up?

BetterSpellCaster

Yes, because this weapon can only be used once per round. It’s meant to serve as a slightly stronger secondary option, while still encouraging you to rely primarily on the spear 👀

Actually I have two other concerns, because I didn’t notice the last page until I went looking for the anti-magic field rule that you mentioned in the post! 🤭 1) This is just a nitpick but in the second sentence of the Cinematic Action feature, the word ‘lower’ would fit better than “fewer”. 2) If the hunter’s second initiative result is equal to its original initiative result and is lowered to the same result as a player character’s initiative, what happens then? I’d check for a Dexterity tiebreaker myself, but what if they’re equal too? Should a roll-off be made?

BetterSpellCaster

In the case of the same initiative and the same Dexterity score, another roll is made to determine who goes first. 🤠 And thank you for pointing out the wording issue 😅

Chefda

Ahhhhh… I was in player mode (I haven’t DMed yet) and assumed that the hunter would be able to attack an equal number of times with his Runic Harpoon attack as he can with his Runic Spear attack! 😅

Chefda

No worries! Being a pedant can come in handy every once in a while! 🤭

Folklo

This is sooo inspiring, thank you !

I have ideas. This might be thrown against my party (Druid, Wizard, Warlock and Cleric) when their level is high enough. Might even be a whole side character.
