Color or black & white
Today I want to tell you when and why I edit photos in color or in black and white.
1. Silhouette shots (backlight situations)
Because we shoot silhouettes completely against the light, it makes little sense to go in the direction of color. Go straight to black and white processing. The first step is to lighten the background until it is almost completely white. Depending on whether you want to have a pure silhouette or still recognize something, you can then lower or raise the low or black points. This way you can still see any jewelry, facial expressions or outfits.
2. Dark & Moody
In this situation, you shoot in a way that protects the highlights in the image. Try not to burn out the lights completely, so shoot rather too dark. Therefore you need to brighten the image. Sometimes you may not have enough dynamic range and can't add color to the image. Then you can switch to black and white processing and brighten the image, so you don't have a problem with unwanted color edges or that the color breaks off at one point.
