Colt has really bad dyslexia and finds it a little difficult to learn things. The blurred speech is the words going in one ear and out the other

Is Colt Dyslexic? I myself suffer from a minor form of dyslexia and the book showed a little what it feels like if I concentrate too hard on the whole instead of the words.

That, plus Colt probably hasn't learned all of the prerequisites to this class--basically a Freshman thrown into a third or fourth year class. Think of someone who hasn't yet taken basic Calculus being tossed into a Differential Equations class--if Colt has previously been to college at all, this is a completely different Major from what he previously learned.

Colt's probably also out of his depth--this does not appear to be a class for first-year students, and it's not something that he would have studied before. If it weren't for the need to stick close to Lola, then he should probably be in something for first-years.
