In the web novel, which was the original version of the story the author released before it was adapted into a light novel series (which the anime is based on), Rimuru's top subordinates actually joined the martial arts tournament. This included Diablo, Benimaru, Shion, Souei, Geld, Gabiru, Hakuro, Ranga, and Gobta. Some other notable participants were Masayuki, Carrion, and Beretta. The tournament was initially just something Rimuru was going to do for fun after Arnaud, one of the Crusaders under Hinata, asked him which of his subordinates was the strongest. But Rimuru figured it could be a great way to attract attention from other countries during the festival, so he made it official. In the end, Benimaru won after barely defeating Diablo in the finals. The author changed a lot of things in the light novel version, especially when it comes to the festival arc. Some readers weren’t happy about Benimaru beating Diablo, mostly because he got a sudden, Tanjiro-style power-up in the middle of the fight. Plus, Diablo would’ve had to kill Benimaru to win, and obviously he wasn’t going to do that. On top of that, it didn’t make much sense for Rimuru to show off so much of his military strength in front of a bunch of important guests. That’s why, in the light novel (and by extension, in the anime), Diablo, Benimaru, and Shion didn’t take part in the tournament. Souei was not even declared as one of the Big Four. Since he’s in charge of Tempest’s spy network, even having his name made public would’ve been a bad idea. He's pretty much like Twilight in Spy x Family (they're voiced by the same actor😮). As a side note, in the web novel, Benimaru said that after the festival, whenever they trained in Ramiris’s dungeon, Diablo would basically torture them. Since they’d just respawn after dying, he didn’t hold back. He was clearly salty about not being able to officially call himself Rimuru’s "number one"😂😂.

To be honest, I think Hinata has no business judging Rimuru's "winning is all that matters" attitude. She cast barriers that significantly weakened him when she faced him the first time, she's no stranger to cowardly tactics.

OMG!!!! why did they change the tournament like that? 😭😭😭 that would have been SUPER PEAK to see all of them fighting against each other 😂 benimaru vs diablo!! really though? I thought for sure Diablo is stronger than any one else of Rimuru's subordinates 😲 I see why though the author removed it, it makes sense that Souei is not there hahaha yea he is like a spy 😂 whoaaa!! I wish that web novel made it to the anime haha I would have loved seeing Diablo in action 💖😭 thank you so much for sharing this! it's fun knowing things that aren't in the anime 🥰

Well, in a real fight, Diablo is definitely Rimuru’s strongest subordinate. The thing is, Diablo’s Unique Skill can destroy a person’s soul, not just their physical body. And of course, he wouldn’t want to use that on someone Rimuru cares about. It would be a big problem since Rimuru can’t bring someone back without their soul. Honestly, they should’ve just connected the arena to Ramiris’s dungeon so Diablo could fight without holding back. Anyway, maybe the author made Masayuki the focus of the tournament this time because people liked him. And now he’s up against Gobta in the finals, who also didn’t want to be there🤣🤣. Gobta keeps getting dragged into situations he never asked for, starting way back with his fight against Gabiru😭.

I see! connecting the dungeon to the arena is a good idea!!! I never thought of that😲 then everyone can go all out without worries haha Gobta is like a sacrifice he gets thrown at everything troublesome, I remember when he got poisoned by Shion's food but at least he gained immunity to poison lol 😂

Gobta might be a coward but he shines when he needs to, i think Rimuru judges him a bit too harshly 😅 Even though Ranga helped vs Carrion i still think Gobta did great against a former Demon Lord.

Rimuru has such low expectations of Gobta 😆 for sure Gobta got the power, whenever they throw him to fight something he wins. but he is against Masayuki next so that's not going to happen 😂
