Glad you found that cool little detail When Gluttony ate rem we saw the flash of memories of Subaru and Rem living happily together sloth if route Also the closeups on the knife part to imply that Subaru restarted many times to try and save rem Also if you remember in season 1 when the letter was empty its because Rem was the who send it

Let's go! Season 2! Re:Zero enjoyers eating good today. Here we find out the very unfortunate truth - Subaru can't just die and fix everything. His power isn't something that is that convenient. Not everything can be fixed by dying. We were always under the belief that Subaru should just die whenever something goes wrong. Now we see that nothing in life is ever that convenient. Now the true question is, why do we get the "checkpoints" where we get them? The shots, after Subaru dies, with the knife in them also show that he could do it and kill himself, the option is right there, but Return by Death can't clearly fix everything so death isn't always the right answer. If you remember from the White Whale fight, I believe they mentioned that whoever got hit by the magic mist would cease to exist. Their bodies were still there, even after battle, but nobody would remember who they were. We can assume something similar here happened to Rem. We also find out that Crusch also lost a part of herself. Although she is concious and not sleeping like Rem. So there must be different conditions or things that differenentiate these two circumstances. From what we can compare to with things we learned in season 1 there is probably 3 different types of "eating" going on: Eating the name of someone, so they are forgotten by the people, eating the memories of someone, so they forget their past and eating the whole existance of someone (like in season 1 when Rem was lost to the Whale), so they are totally forgotten by everyone AND every trace of them is also removed from the world (objects and everything, like in Rem's room). Or so I think at least based on what we see. I really feel bad for Felix here, seeing him so dismayed by Crusch's condition is just so sad. You can tell that he really cares about her by the way he talks here during the talks. Seeing Subaru cry here at the end is super sad, but it's also clear that he finally has made up his mind for certain to become Rem's hero and keep trying his best to restore her back to normal. Seeing Emilia hug her as he cries is such a beautiful way to show (to Subaru, not only the viewers) that Subaru isn't alone anymore.

those were memories? I thought they were just fantasies of Rem, you did mention about different routes Subaru could take 😲 OMG! The letter!!!! I totally forgot about that, yes that wasn't explained so that's why it's empty because Rem is not remembered anymore 😭😭

SprinkleVerse

I thought that Subaru will be able to fix everything if anyone close to him died, but yea this showed us that that's not the case 😭 I was happy to see Emilia being there for Subaru, because Rem was the only one who was there for him and now she is gone, but seeing Emilia doing the same for Subaru was really nice 🥹

You sure about the knife? That knife is a peeling knife and he has memories of hurting his fingers with it in the kitchen, being taught by Rem to use it. I think it was more alluding to that. Of course I haven't read the source material, so I wouldn't know. I don't trust Google's AI answer, more often than not it's just straight up wrong and just copies one of the top-listed answers you get from Google-listed websites.

Yea your thoughts at the start here is exactly how I felt. This anime takes away your fear of the protag dying, I guess most do, but this one not even a little bit, 0 focus on it. Instead, you fear that he will "accidently" survive too far and not be able to go back if any mistakes were made. The fear of a going past an unfixable mistake and living with these consequences are scary.

Also, I know you just finished this season, but as me who just started season 2 re-watch on yer rections, your comment here in episode 1 haha. "I thought his suffering would be over now" at 33:33, as you know by now.... Suffering is Subaru's bread and butter lol.

SprinkleVerse

he didn't even have time to breath before jumping into another disaster😭

SprinkleVerse

exactly!! and in this case it's Rem 😭 but at least she is not totally dead she can be brought back 🥹💖
