I think this movie is one of the most compassionate pieces of media ever produced. I remember watching a therapist react to this movie and he called it an "empathy jumpstarter." That's an apt description I believe. This comment is gonna be a bit long (and a bit rambley), sorry if it's a bit much. The way this movie depicts mental health struggles is beautiful, especially depression and anxiety. Whoever wrote the source material almost certainly suffers from it themselves or knows someone intimately who does. It also does an amazing job of showing what real forgiveness means. They don't try to depict any of the wrong things the characters do as excusable. What happened to Shouko was wrong, what Ishida did was wrong, what his friends did was wrong. There are no excuses for any of it. But that's the beauty of forgiveness: It's not earned, it's given. Sure Ishida tried his best to make amens... But he could never erase the harm completely. Shouko on the other hand had the power to forgive and forget and thankfully she chose to. I also respect how they handled the "romance." The reality is if it would have been a bigger part of the story it would have muddied the plot, it would have cheapened Ishida's motivations from "I just want to be a better person and fix some of the wrongs I made" to "I really like this girl so I'm gonna change to get close to her." With that being said I do believe it still counts as a romance. It's pretty obvious that they are attracted to each other and will end up together, eventually (I mean come on they are SO cute together).

The classmates wanted to give him 1000 paper cranes. It's a japanese tradition to wish for someone's recovery if they've been seriously injured

apoc9

The original title does translate to "Shape of voice".

SprinkleVerse

I see! that's why it was written at the end "the shape of voice"!

SprinkleVerse

so that's what the paper cranes were for! I didn't know that thanks for the info 😆🥰

SprinkleVerse

aww I totally understand 🥹 this movie really pierces the heart 😭

SprinkleVerse

thank you so much! I'm happy you enjoyed the reaction 🥰 I didn't know what to expect watching this movie but yea it hits hard 🥹

"They don't try to depict any of the wrong things the characters do as excusable." you are so right!! When I saw what Ishida was doing and trying to fix things but he was faced with nothing but more blame, it made me feel really sorry for him, but it's true he did bad things and just by doing good it isn't going to erase the bad things he did. 🥹

SprinkleVerse

it caught me off guard I totally didn't know it was going to be so heavy like this you know. 😭 I thought it was going to be some cute romance 😆

I think it's a great movie, but having read the manga, it falls a bit flat for me in some aspects on re-watch. The runtime is the biggest issue; they couldn't give all the side characters the development they needed. The movie really condensed and simplified a lot of content. If you really loved the film, I highly recommend getting the manga hardcovers—there are two. They're really good, and if you read it from the beginning, you'll love it and you will see the ending to the series.

SprinkleVerse

oh so this movie wasn't the ending? that is interesting! thank you for the recommendation 🥰
