Yeah, the main reason why Senku didn’t make guns is that he simply can’t produce gunpowder at the moment. One of the main components of black powder is potassium nitrate, which Senku can’t make without the nitric acid from the cave. Loved today’s reactions! This part of the season was quite story-driven, but soon, we’ll be back to the steady scientific advancements. Byakuya’s story, though sad, was also really beautiful. Being able to hear your father’s words of encouragement, even after thousands of years… Not only do Senku and Subaru have the same voice actor, but also some of the best parents in anime.

I'm glad you enjoyed the reaction!🥰 I get lost whenever the science talk begins but it's so interesting to watch, I'm learning a lot 😆 omg so true!! best parents 🥹💖

That was a smart move to make those swords. Sure, it isn't perfect, it just has done the deed and speed of them. We are no longer in the stone world, we are slowly leaving it.

Here's some more info about swords and blacksmithing they did for the katana in this episode, I'm very into medieval weapons and blacksmithing so I know quite a bit about this part. Traditional katana making required a lot of folding of the metal because the ore that the Japanese people had was very impure, meaning there was a bunch of other stuff mixed in with the metals. That made the metal structure very bad if you tried to just put it in a furnace and smelt it into bars. You fold it many times to get rid of those impurities which means that the more you fold, the more impurities you get out of the metal. There is a limit though, since it also removes some good stuff from the metal and you don't want to "overwork" it. It's like bread dough or something like that in a sense. You want to knead it enough to where it will have air and everything is mixed well, but if you mix it too much, it will get too dense and gummy. There is something else too. I don't think swords are something he should've prioritized. It's a good thing to make but there's reasons why it actually isn't the best weapon on the battlefield and why spears were used. Reason 1: Iron was very scarce so the less iron something used the cheaper it was to make and buy by soldiers. If something uses less iron, you can make more of it. Say like 1 sword would be maybe 3 spears or something, since you only need enough metal for the tip and not the handle. Reason 2: If your enemies don't wear any armor, swords will do but even if they get some form of primitive armor, it can stop a cut, even if partially. A stab is harder to stop. There are problems with stabbing too, but if they wanted to make something that can cut and stab, a normal medieval sword would've been better, since katanas aren't really meant for stabbing as much. Reason 3: Spears have way longer reach, meaning that you don't need to be as close to your enemy, especially without armor. Even if you are going against stone spears, they can still be deadly and having to fight against a spear with a sword is more difficult, even if you have better quality weapons. The reason why I think they were able to defeat the underlings here is because they aren't skilled with using spears so they didn't take advantage of what makes the spear a better weapon. It's easy to see what difference skill can make and how swords versus a spear would turn out if both fighters are of similar skill levels when looking at Hyoga fight.
