Daniel Meissner

My first time watching this I did not really get the sense that Lakan was behind the whole plot to kill Jinshi. I do think he had figured out what was goin on though and just wanted Maomao to be involved. He was purposefully bringing these events to Jinshi's (and by extension Maomao's) attention the whole time. If you think back, he is the one that brought both the seaweed poisoning and the metalworker's will to Jinshi so Maomao would look into them. He gave them all of the hints to foil the plan and save Jinshi's life without being directly involved. Looking at how he reacted when the guard struck Maomao, I think he was genuinely enraged at how his daughter was hurt so I got the sense that he actually does care about her a lot. Then seeing her even more injured and passed out being carried out of the temple, he was just shocked and emotionally unstable seeing her in that state.

I think he figured out something was going on, but not exactly what. But he is extremely smart and his daughter was educated by someone who is just as smart and knowledgeable, so I think he knew she was onto something important and decided to help a hand. I think the shock he showed was not just anger because she's hurt, but also from the care that Jinshi carried her with. He is the younger brother of the emperor and he seems to value his daughter so much. I think until now he probably assumed that he thought of her as his plaything just like what his servants assume, but it is clear that he actually cares a lot about her.

The guard did do this to lakans daughter, lakan being the military strategist, probably has enough pull to punish him and I think that lakan really cares about maomao

and the guard did overreact but he had no reason to believe maomao since she had no evidence
