Alright! This was my most anticipated reaction from you ever! And you'll have to forgive me because I need to nerd out about so many parts of this movie! This movie is SUPER scientifically accurate in a TON of areas as the author of the book (Andy Wier) loves hard sci-fi (genre name for this kind of very nerdy science fiction). So first of all to answer your question about time at the end: This is because of a thing called "time dilation." This is a very real and proven phenomenon that makes it so the faster you move through space the slower you move through time. Nothing in the universe can move faster than the speed of light so once you start getting real close to that speed limit you start to experience less time. So from Grace's perspective the trip to Tau Ceti took I think around 4 years whereas from the perspective of people on earth it took about 12ish years. So between the time it took for Grace to get to Tau Ceti and then the time it took for the probes to get back I believe you're getting close to 30ish years for them. The actual science behind all this is quite complicated and I don't fully understand it but that's the general idea. Rocky's home planet is actually based on a real planet that was discovered in the star system 40 Eridani. Sadly it has since been disproven after more people looked into it but at the time the book was written it was a real documented planet in that solar system. Rocky's species whole biology was built based on the conditions that would logically have to exist on such a planet for it to support life. It's SUPER interesting and I highly recommend checking out some interviews with the author. Another important detail (from the book): When Grace decided to save rocky instead of going home it WAS a suicide mission. All evidence pointed to Grace not surviving so he was choosing to die for Rocky in that moment. This mirrors the moment back on earth when he failed to rise to the challenge and sacrifice himself for humanity, but this time he did the right thing and saved both Rocky and his entire species because if Rocky didn't survive the journey neither would the predator so the Eridians would all die. There's so much more I could talk about but I'll stop here. As usual, loved your reaction! Appreciate all the pauses and the time you take to understand things! Glad you liked the movie! Edit: Forgot to mention, Grace didn't travel to another galaxy but another solar system within our galaxy. Actually Tau Ceti is very close to us relative to other solar systems (not the closest but within a reasonable distance).

One of my favorite movies in the last few years. Immediately went and read the book after watching it the first time. There's some parts in the book that I'm always bit sad they didn't have time to include. There's a number of scenes of how they made the ship and resources for the trip. They built giant astrophage farms in the Sahara desert, and even dropped bombs on Antarctica. The problem on earth was that the sun was cooling so fast that they wouldn't have time to do the mission, so they had to heat the earth up as much as possible to buy more time. Another detail is that Stratt constantly runs into problems getting companies and governments to follow her plan. She also implies that after the ship is launched, she expects that humanity will turn on her and send her to prison, despite her being given permission to do whatever it takes to get the mission launched. The movie hints that she was in prison because when we see Stratt at the end, she has some tattoos on her neck that match prison tattoos.

OMG, what a movie! Right when this came out, I just randomly decided to go to a cinema for the first time on 5 years. I honestly felt like I won a lottery with how satisfied I felt after watching this movie. I feel like sci-fi, and especially space movies tend to lean more towards dystopia, catastrophy or horror themes. So a sci-fi comedy was a real breath of fresh air. I really enjoyed the humor, loved the dynamic between Grace and Rocky, not to mention the sound design and special effects were incredible! Of course, it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. There were many close calls, goosebumps, maybe some tears here and there... But I am a sucker for happy endings and this movie delivered! The pacing and overall structure with two alternating timelines as we slowly learn about the past worked really great here, especially near the end, when we learned that Grace was forced into this mission. The portrayal of fear in this movie is phenomenal. The sheer realism of being so afraid of certain death that you risk dooming all of humanity. In many stories, the character would probably cave in, rationalizing that he's gonna die anyway if they don't fix this, or being too crushed by guilt and expectations to refuse. But that human reaction from Grace is something I honestly did not expect, and, as a very fearful person, I really resonated with him. And the fact that it all lead to the lesson from the beginning of the movie: We aren't born brave. We find someone to be brave for... And he found Rocky. Thank you so much, Sprinkle! It was a great reaction and I can't wait for more!

Oh, and here are some explanations and stuff I noted while watching! Argon is not toxic so to speak. It's actually the third most common gas in air after nitrogen and oxygen. It's just that we can't use it to breathe, so if his suit was to be damaged, argon would fill his lungs and cause him to suffocate. I suppose they were using it for safety, because it's one of the so-called 'noble gasses', meaning it's amost entirely nonreactive, so if the Astrophage was to spontaniously combust or something, it wouldn't blow up the lab. By 'toot to scoot', he meant the things basically use the light they consume to propell themselves, so by human standards it would be like using farts to move around. They actually haven't left the galaxy. Tau Ceti is a star in the same galaxy as our Sun, it's just 11 light years from us. To put it in a perspective, our galaxy is about 26,000 light years long. What you meant to say, is that it has its own planetary system. When they were trying to leave the Tau Ceti F orbit and the fuel tank got damaged, the Astrophage began migrating towards the planet. After all, they are alive inside those tanks, so the moment they were released, they instinctively began rapidly moving towards the planet to reproduce. But the energy they released to propel themselves began spinning the ship. After they released the damaged compartments and escaped from the orbit, the ship couldn’t stabilize, because Grace was injured and couldn’t activate the centrifuge.

so Grace's ship was moving at the speed of light that's why it felt shorter for him? I see! that's super interesting! 😮 wow I didn't get the full meaning of Grace's choice to save Rocky! I was just happy that he chose to save his friend but that's so true!!! he made the decision he couldn't make for himself on earth 🥹 and that's because he became friends with Rocky, someone who Grace cares about. the people on earth told him that they are doing this because they have people they care for and Grace never had anyone but now he got Rocky and he was willing to sacrifice himself for his friend 🥹 so beautiful!! thank you for clarifying that I totally missed that point 💖

SprinkleVerse

wow that's crazy! she was so desperate to get this mission done and off the ground for the sake of humanity and this is how they treated her? 😭 thank you for sharing these details 💖

SprinkleVerse

OMG! I also thought the same about Grace! when he was told he needed to go and what's at stake I thought he was going to go with it but he firmly refused, so when they wanted to force him to go I was so shocked and wasn't really happy with that act even though it was to save humanity. thank you for all the explanations! now I understand better what happened when the ship was spinning and Grace was knocked out! I didn't get that part before 😅

Revan Malice

Humanity was lucky Grace wasn't a petty person who intentionally sabotaged the mission because they betrayed him. I think I would do the opposite of him lol.

SprinkleVerse

so true 😅 I was wondering what he would do after remembering what they did to him. luckily he still saved earth and Rocky! (´▽`ʃ♡ƪ)

"You can save your planet and you can abandon it at the same time" The theme is super nice for me. Grace has best friend in space.

What a movie! I didn't expect this at all too, to find a friend in space!! I'm glad this had a happy ending, since we had one with Wall-E, for a moment I thought this was going to be the opposite but thankfully it wasn't the case. I love their friendship, Grace and Rocky!!!! I guess ppl already told you about the relativity aspect of the travel, that's why even if it was a 11 light years distance from our solar system, he made it in 4 or something, we know he was going at almost the speed of light and that makes Physics go a little wild. I enjoyed very much, loved it!! Thank you for the reaction!! ✨✨✨✨ 👋👎🪨 See u and fist my bump! 😂
