You'd think I'd have more to say about this episode, and so did I, but I'm kind of speechless. I wish I could explain all my feelings but I can't. As explained before, the books let the reader experience everything the person whose book it is experienced when they were alive. So he literally relived through his past again. This was the clearest to see when he read Meili's book. He lived through her life and almost melded together with her existence. In a way, he's melding together with his past self as he's reading the books. As it was with Meili though, he starts to experience existensial crisis. It's especially bad this time around because he also had issues about it before, when he was going insane. And this leads to him finding out who Natsuki Subaru really is. He isn't special. He's not a Superman. He isn't a hero. He's just Natsuki Subaru. He is just a guy who cares for the people around him. That's all he ever was. He just didn't realize it. This made him understand that he is the kind of person that would help others, that isn't just some lazy neet that is useless. That whole scene of him accepting his true self was probably the best self love and self acceptance moment in anime that I could remember. The "Hey, brother", that the original Subaru says in Od Lagna, really throws me off here. I feel like it's too much like Al that it makes me think that Al might be Subaru who just time traveled. It's probably why we don't also see his face, as that would probably be a dead giveaway. I can't put it any better myself than someone else I saw, so I'm going to quote them here: "So, if I'm not mistaken, Rui has an ability to split her consciousness. And she used it to divide herself into two (I'll call them Rui A and Rui B) and have Rui B eat Subaru and then possess Amnesiabaru's body, while Rui A stayed in the Hall of Memories. So the one who possessed him to kill Meili or to get him out of the ice cage, was Rui B. And it was one of the steps to make Amnesiabaru reject "Natsuki Subaru", so that he would go back to Rui A and get eaten again. But it seems that the 15 deaths in span of... probably less than an hour followed by reading another 20 something deaths was a bit too much for Rui B to handle." Rui that ate the original Subaru's memories saw his memories of deaths, but as she said, those memories aren't fresh (as I see it, she wants to experience death through memories, as she did here). As you can imagine now, Subaru's authority that would let Rui play with life is Return by Death. The Rui with Subaru's memories didn't want the other Rui to say the name of it as she's scarred from Subaru's memories and all the bad experiences Subaru has gone through by saying it to others. The "Emilia-tan" and her looking so happy after he said it made me so emotional. SUBARU IS FINALLY BACK BABY He's my favorite anime character of all time for a reason, I'm so proud of him. Also, probably my favorite episode next to "Parent and child".

Yeah... If only Rui could jump out of the screen to eat my memories... Man, I wish I could experience this chapter for the first time again. As a novel reader, nothing could match the emotions when I first read it, but seeing it again, it just doesn't hit that hard. Still cried like a bitch tho. Mainly when Newbaru started thanking Subaru. With a heavy heart, I must say farewell to my 2nd favorite anime protagonist... He was only with us for 9 episodes, but he proved to be more than just an aura monster... He adopted Meili, he dedicated himself to saving Shaula, he gave us a new record of deaths per episode... And from beginning to the end, Newbaru was an amazing guy. Also, seeing how he still couldn't comprehend how "Natsuki Subaru" achieved all this, even after living through all his memories, just goes to show how much this childhood trauma and self-hatred is ingrained in him. Even though he saw all the things he accomplished, all the people he saved, he needed a moment to reflect before he could accept that he wasn't a superhuman, that he did that by simply being himself, by trying, by loving everyone. But all of this still brought us some new development. Subaru may not be ready to love himself yet, but a big step was taken. Newbaru said it himself: "I respect you." Now, let's talk about that Rui section. So, she split herself into two, had her other half eat Subaru's memories and possess his body to deepen his identity crisis and torment him until he can be eaten again. But it backfired badly. I can't really blame her. Experiencing dying 17 times in span of, probably, less than an hour and then another 20 something times through Newbaru reading the books would break anyone... So, did Rui hit herself with her own card there? Did her mind break so much that she changed her identity? Because I doubt she can simply eat herself, just like she can't eat the same person twice. Am I correct in assuming that the Rui who was inside Newbaru, broken by Subaru and Newbaru's experiences, rejected the identity of Rui Arneb, a gluttonous kid who will devour Natsuki Subaru in order to reach a happy life she desires, and became a new entity? And if that new Rui was eaten, does that mean there is now two Ruis? The original one, who just ate the deserter, and the eaten Rui? Would that create an amnesiac or comatosed version of her? Also, if her memories were to be eaten, what exactly would remain of her? What personality would she have? With how many people they devoured, we really have no idea what the Gluttonies were like originally. Their current state is a product of hundreds of minds fighting for control. So, if that was to be removed, what would the triplets be like? The implications are crazy... Now, unfortunately, this episode suffered some major cuts in the content. The Rui scene in the novel was a lot longer, showing her backstory, why she is stuck in the Hall of Memories, her relationship with her brothers. But I'll hold off on talking about that, because I think there's still a chance they'll come back to that, either in the next episode, or in the season finale. Unfortunately, there's a big chance I'll miss the next 2 episode reactions. I'm going to a 2 week military camp and I'm not sure whether I'll have enough free time to watch them, or if I'll even have internet access. And it's a real shame, because the remaining episodes are gonna be absolutely wild! For instance, remember the fight between Garfiel and Kurgan in season 3? Well, the animator responsible for that fight worked on one of the next episodes. So anyway. I'm gonna miss your reactions! You're an amazing gal, SprinkleVerse!

that theory of Subaru being Al! 😱 is it possible to have 2 versions of Subaru in the same world though? Thank you for the explanation for what happened with Rui! I was so confused 😅 it makes perfect sense now. I know right!!! that Emilia-tan moment got me so excited hahaha it was like "SUBARU IS BAAAAAACK!!" 😂

True to us viewers it won't feel the same seeing Subaru's past deaths as the first time, but I was thinking about how Newbaru must be feeling seeing them for the first time and that was painful to watch 😭 things didn't go the way I thought they would I was very surprised. oh wow I didn't think about Rui with Subaru's memories as a new entity now, I thought that she was eaten at the end by the other Rui and she also broke in the end. that's too bad!! I wish they added the cut content 🥹 I would've loved to see more about Gluttony's origins for sure! aww no worries, you can catch up when you are back (´▽`ʃ♡ƪ) Good luck with your training! wait, is it training? idk what you do in a military camp 😅 Thank you so much for the kind words 🥰

I'm not sure if there can be 2 Subarus or not, it's hard to say. The one time we did get a look at Al's eyes, they did look similar to Subaru's but nothing is confirmed. The theory of Al being Subaru is also changed by the fact that Subaru's element was shadow (as said by Puck in season 1) but we've seen Al use earth magic against Capella and Subaru definitely isn't that buff or knows how to use a sword. Although those latter two could be explained by working out and learning how to wield a sword, I don't have an explanation about the earth magic as I'm not a 100% sure how the system fully works. Either you can't learn magic outside of your affinity or you can but the effect is reduced. If you can but the effect is reduced, the theory could still make sense, however if you can't learn magic outside of the affinity you have, then the theory wouldn't be true. About the Rui thing, it seems like they cut a lot of it out and a lot of readers were mad that this episode was badly directed, and I do have to say that the Rui part was confusing so I understand, however all that aside, I really loved the episode. I'm so excited to see an even more confident Subaru going forward.
