Super excited for this one! As a history graduate, this one was always one I liked. Seeing how the story blended real events and people (some characters were real people, others made up) into its own story is always interesting.

You're also correct to pick up on the dates and locations. The man telling the story, Leif Ericson, is widely regarded as the first European to discover North America, landing in what would today be Canada.

Since Vinland Saga is one of my favorite animes of all time (and I love viking and Old Norse stuff in general) I've decided to give some more info on what you or others might be missing. Vinland Saga is loosely based on multiple different viking sagas and stories and most likely modified for it to be interesting to the people watching/reading Vinland Saga. A lot of it is made up and fiction, but there are a lot of historical figures in the show that I'll bring up when the time is right. The battle the show starts off on, is The Battle Of Hjörngavágr (about 986) which is believed to be an actual battle that took place in Norway (there are very few records from that time after all, so it's hard to say anything with 100% certainty). The art on Wikipedia page features an illustration of an hailstorm during the battle (which was well depicted also in the show). The art was drawn by Halfdan Egedius. I imagine that's where the author took the name for the chain guy, whose slave escaped, although that name could have other sources too, like Halfdan Ragnarsson who was a leader and son to one of the more known vikings of all time, Ragnar Lodbrok. Vinland is another name for what we know as America now, I'm not sure if it's around Canada or USA, but it's North America for sure. It's said that a viking, named Leif Eriksson actually discovered America way before Columbus did. Keep in mind the use of the word "warrior". Leif calls himself a true warrior here, even though he's a sailor and an explorer and doesn't actually fight like you'd normally think when hearing of that word, especially in the context of vikings. Which is also shown here in this episode from Thorfinn's view: he believes that his ancestors couldn't have been people who ran away from Norway as they are vikings and warriors after all. Jormungand as it was said in the show, or as it's more commonly written, Jörmungandr (if you were to say it like you were speaking english, it would be said something akin to: Yor-mun-gun-dar) is a world serpent in norse mythology who lives in the sea and basically surrounds the earth (since they did think earth was flat). The first king of Norway, Harald, is a real person. He was called Harald Fairhair or in old Norse: Haraldr Hárfagri. There's not much to say about him though, as not much is known besides what is written in poems and sagas. Speaking of vikings and their origins, the word itself comes from "to go on a viking" or "to go on a plunder/pillage/raiding" which is what vikings are known for. That's how these people came to be known as vikings. "Then where does everyone who wants to run away from here go?" I'm sure you can already tell that there's this theme of war and trying to escape it. Leif said their ancestors fled west to Iceland (which is where they are) from Norway. And Leif himself tried finding fertile land, which he did find, called Vinland. Which Thors later uses to give the slave a peace of mind before he passes away, that there's no wars or slave traders there. There's this clear search for hope in these dark times, that are filled with slaves, wars, murdering and rape and pillaging. It's harsh to say it like that, but that's just how the time of the vikings was, it's how our world truly used to be and we should accept these things. The show is even toned down a bit, as I know of a few moments that were cut from the show just because how awful they were.

The area Leif Ericson landed/the historical Vinland is in northern Canada, around the Newfoundland area if I remember right. They occasionally find viking artifacts in the area, either left behind or likely traded to native Americans in the area

Noted! Thanks for the clarification! 💖

The Norse/Vikings ran the largest slave trade port in Europe at this time out of Dublin. You could find Vikings anywhere from Iceland to Turkey at this time, with some even being hired as mercenaries by the Sultans of the Ottomans.
