A large chunk of the monstrous popularity of MMA in Japan can be put down to a form of pro wrestling called shoot-style, as practiced by companies like UWF, RINGS and UWF-i. These companies, oddly, had their own existence shaped by incidents where wrestlers went into business for themselves, doublecrossed their peers and legit athletes, and just plain got into fights in the ring. This video takes a look at said events and their importance, covering the likes of Akira Maeda, Nobuhiko Takada, Koji Kitao and, of course, Antonio Inoki. Enjoy!
