I know this may come off abrasive and/or pugnacious but I think manape would be better. In the English language the adjective comes before the noun. Tarzan is an ape man barbecue he is a man that acts like ape. In apeman the man is the noun and the the ape is the adjective describing the noun. These would be man apes because they are apes adopting trait of men. The ape would be the noun and the and the man would be the adjective describing the noun.
