We worked with Itomesei to create a quick visual reference on a few different male body types! Here we can compare skinny, "average," and muscular men - take note of which areas are emphasized or deemphasized. For example:1. Pectoralis Major - The chest muscle is large and pronounced by using thicker lines with sharper angles in the muscular man.
2. Abdominal muscles - Of course the muscular guy is rocking a 6-pack. However, the "average" guy still shows some slight definition, but the body fat that rests inbetween the skin and muscles softens the lines, making the abs less pronounced. For the skinny guy, his ab lines are weak and only show the outer line of the abs where they meet the external oblique muscles (These muscles are on your side and help with bending or twisting movements)
3. Body fat - The skinny guy has very low body fat, but also less defined muscles, which means you can often see indications of prominent bony parts, like slight indication of the ribs underneath the pecs and indications for the bottom of the rib cage. In the skinny body type, you can also see the "Anterior superior iliac spine", an area near the top of the hip bone that sticks out.In addition, the muscular man has low body fat, but because his muscles are well defined, he appears less bony. This is also the body type where you can see the serratus anterior - a muscle group right underneath the pecs and to the sides of the abs. This muscle group attaches to the ribs to help with breathing, and the shoulder blade to assist in punching movements. An "average" guy will fall somewhere in the middle, you may be able to see some muscles or bones, or perhaps they have a little more body fat covering them up to create a softer look.
4. The neck - Neck thickness is affected by body fat and muscle definition. The most important muscles to know for this area are the trapezius (which connects the neck to the shoulder blade) and the sternocleidomastoid (connects the head to the collarbone). These muscles are visible in all 3 body types, but will be more pronounced in a muscular body type. There are also the arm muscles such as the deltoids, biceps, triceps, and the forearm muscles, but when you're practicing anatomy it's a good idea to focus on one area first, like the main torso muscles. This way you're not overwhelmed with information and you can commit your new knowledge to memory faster.
