Time for another community poll! We've had a lot of questions over the last few weeks about using our maps and if people print them or use them digitally. So we thought we'd ask!

We've had a lot of Americans ask us about where to go to get them printed but we're over here in Europe and have no clue, so if you have some suggestions share them in the comments!

If you use a virtual tabletop (VTT), let us know which. :)

We were sent the photo below by the awesome Thibaut, showing off how they print out the maps. If you have photos or screenshots, email them to us at czepeku@gmail.com. It'd be great to share different setups with the community.

Infinitas DM is my VTT of choice

Neale Genereux

I literally spent the weekend sawing a hole in my kitchen table so I could mount a TV underneath for VTT :P

TheSwedishPlantie

I play exclusively with Roll20, set it up in the living room on a big TV with a laptop as my "GM screen". That being said, I'd very much like to be able to print the maps at some point and play D&D that way.

bewby

I use a VTT for both my online and IRL games.

Devin Brown

I don't use a VTT so much as I display them on a horizontal 55" television and march the minis around on top of it. Still digital though.

Matt Bond

VTT for displaying on a Tv during in person games, using Roll20 and Dynamic Dungeons player

James Mulholland

I print all maps for my home game using the Poster setting in Adobe Acrobat, which tile prints a large image across multiple letter-sized pages. I usually print at around 90% size, doesn't shrink the grid noticeably, but does usually save a few pages. Then I just use a paper trimmer to take off the borders and Scotch tape the sheets together. It's not as pretty as a single large-format print, but it's a LOT cheaper and quicker than going to a print shop.

Draigon

I've used a VTT on occasion, but my easily distracted younger children are better drawn in by having something physical. I tend to use a mix of paper miniatures from various sources along with a Poster printout of whatever map I'm using.

Andrew Williams

My party play over skype. When I DM I use photoshop to manipulate my maps. (Cause I'm a zelot and refuse to upgrade).

Xentrig

I use Maptool for VTT for my sessions

Tim Kinman

Been using Astral TableTop primarily. I LOVE your maps!

ForrestDumb

I'm printing on a professional Large Format Printer on thick paper. My university offers this for students at very nice prices. Under 2 $ a map. I'd recommend for others to check their local universities and libraries for similar services. Could be way cheaper than a print shop and the quality is so much better than a home printer.

Another patron, he posted above. Awesome because he was the first to respond to our request for map photos. Was very happy to see our maps in use for the first time. I'd love to see more home setups, so if you ever get any time to take in-game shots, send them our way. :)

Czepeku

Thanks Forrest, that's a great idea, I'll suggest that when people ask in future. Libraries are great for that sort of thing, there's usually one in most towns.

Czepeku

How's Astral Tabletop? I've not even heard of it before. Do the maps work fine with it? I should check it out.

Czepeku

How is Maptool? Do the maps work well on it? I hear a lot of Roll20/FG complaints, not heard much about Maptool.

Czepeku

That's a pretty unique solution. Do you screenshare and just paint over the maps as you go? If so that's really cool, much looser and creative than using a VTT itself.

Czepeku

Glad you're sticking to traditional means, you're right, I think children respond to that a lot better. I miss playing with my HeroQuest board and figures as a kid. Just having the physical, tangible paper and cardboard set up made it way cooler. What campaign are you running for them?

Czepeku

That's creative and you're right, it sounds a lot cheaper. If anyone asks for a cheap solution I'll send them this idea, thanks James.

Czepeku

The VTT/TV mix seems like it is getting really popular. Do you connect it up to a tablet/laptop for each player or do you have all the control as DM?

Czepeku

Horizontal TV? Did you make one of those gaming tables with the sunken screen?

Czepeku

I'm really glad I asked this question, I hadn't heard of MapTool before but it seems like a great alternative.

Czepeku

How many games are you in right now? For the IRL games do you have a TV you gather around? I'm still in the paper and pens age of gaming it seems...

Czepeku

And they look great! Thanks again for the photos.

Czepeku

Having the physical maps printed out with real models is a lot of fun. I really enjoy the haptic sensation of moving figurines around, but it does require a lot more work and set up. Much easier using laptops when everyone's got one.

Czepeku

Oh cool! You should send some photos. I'd love to see how it turned out. Do you have a gaming room specifically for it?

Czepeku

Hey Fritz, why Infinitas DM? I think you're the only one to give that as an answer, would love to know why. I hadn't even heard of it before. There's so many up and coming VTTs with new features recently.

Xentrig

Maptool is a bit older and not the most intuitive thing to run, but the price of free got me.

Xentrig

And the maps work great on it! Thank you for the awesome work

Technically 3. My online game is run on Roll20 and it has so far been a 2 year campaign 1-7th level and we're heading to Triboar before I take them to Red Hand of Doom. I'm hoping to take this campaign to 20th level so the scope is quite large and will end in the Astral Plane. My next campaign for that table will be Spelljammer! I'm super excited haha. Other than that I play in a Alternate Magical Wild West campaign run on Roll20. For IRL games I often run one shots and things for friends and family, and a handful of times a month at my local library I run a West Marches style campaign for a bunch of kids after school. For my IRL games I load up a more light weight VTT than roll20 on a 32" TV that i removed the mount/bezel and I built a sort of "picture frame" around and set a piece of plexi glass over top. I use an HDMI cord to create a "second" monitor for my notebook. This frame has a couple of handholds, is fairly lightweight/portable. ugly, but gets the job done. I run a lot of Theater of the Mind encounters so I've got sort of a "homescreen" which i bought from some other artist on gumroad which has like trinket tokens, an area for me to put information like the date, weather, and other important details/notes and a grid to help run combat TotM (<a href="https://i.imgur.com/Fu7JMmT.jpg)..." rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://i.imgur.com/Fu7JMmT.jpg)...</a> when needed and bust out great maps like yours for big set piece battles or to set the scene. Like when my players arrive in Triboar I will be using your Market Map to give them an idea of the atmopshere even tho i plan no real combats on the map itself :P

Tim Kinman

It's quite a lot like Roll20. They have a couple unique things going for them. There are a few effects that you can turn-on over a map. They include various levels of rain and snow, as well as a sun-ray type effect. There are a number of areas that are still being finished, but I find it functional enough for the type of gameplay I'm engaged in. Being part of the beta group I've noticed they are quite responsive to feedback. Your maps import quite nicely! I'm running a feywild game using the new "Into the Wyrd and Wild" Kickstarter. Astral Tabletop's user interface is what really sells it for me. It scales to full screen very nicely allowing my projector to get the full size.

Andrew Williams

I don't think it's the best way to go about it. Bit yes, we simply screenshare and I can quickly so simple things like create radius' for spells or status effects by drawing on the assets I use. The downside is that I still have a lot of paper and fuss on my end, as I know that Roll20, and similar set ups have initiative trackers and easy access to stats and stuff. But hey-ho, works for me.

Draigon

We're working through Lost Mines for now. It's giving me a good bit of insight into how they want to play and after this I expect to mix things up quite a bit.

Neale Genereux

I'll post some photos next time we use one of your maps! No special gaming room, I live in a small apartment so everything has to pull doubled duty. Hence, the kitchen table is now also gaming TV storage.

Aaron Rogers

Arkenforge VTT because the progress on it is amazing. I've had patches specifically for things that I've asked for within hours, and it loads video (dynamic dungeons etc) maps and is getting patched very regularly and I dont have to have a subscription with it.

Czepeku

Sounds awesome, I love when devs actually respond to requests and feedback like that.
