This show is SO good at foreshadowing. Season 1 spent so much time establishing that modern defensive magic is optimized against magical attacks, while physical attacks can break through much more easily, which is why we saw mages using earth and other physical matter against barriers. Now Season 2 keeps giving us little demonstrations of that weakness, especially with demons using actual physical weapons against Frieren and Fern. Without spoiling anything, this feels like major setup for Season 3, because the manga puts a lot more emphasis on physical attacks being used against mages.
