Hello, Patreon family! Please enjoy my detailed analysis of the Apothecary Diaries Season 2, Episode 19. What a diabolical cliffhanger this was, with the mysterious Lady Shenmei?! By far, she is the most sinister-looking character introduced in the series thus far. And, yes, I am 100% judging her by the book, oops!

My main takeaways from the episode

1) I am thrilled that my hypothesis about the fox village being related to the Mother Royal bloodline was revealed in the episode, but can we talk about the symbolism and enigmatic commentary by Loulan about the colors and the white fox with the masks?!

2) It appears that the true culprit may not be Loulan or Suirei, but their sinister-looking mother, Lady Shenmei, with the cliffhanger??

3) As consistent in the past few episodes, I am left with more questions than answers, and my excitement about confirmed theories is soon replaced by more curiosities and anticipation...

As many of you all commented, the roller-coaster has officially begun descending with full force and gravity, filling me with butterflies and full-body thrills~

So, slight correction on my earlier Tanuki comment... there technically is a creature in IRL Japan to which it corresponds, locally called the Tanuki (and in English: Racoon-Dog). However much like the Fox (Kitsune) that is also being used as a motif, these creatures both are important folklore motif characters in Japanese culture, with lots of legends about them. (More used to be here because I fully expected you to clock something I didnt consider a spoiler here. Removing in case you haven't read it) 🦗

So... has current Benoit seen episode 20 yet? I'm so excited you've finally met Lady Shenmei but I honestly can't wait for next week! Also if I haven't said it before I feel like we're far enough in for it: Outside of Jinshi and Maomao, Shisui is my favorite character in the show

Yay for my 360 degree chess comment coming up lol. The song during the festival really helps to set up the emotional gravity of what they are representing. Shusui following hg up with the “I’m glad you guys get along”. The trauma cycle continues with the characters we get to know. There is so much to pack into the next 4 episodes and somehow they do in such a masterful way. The analyzing from here out is going to be nuts.

The lantern plant is an abortifacient is what maomao was hinting at and laolan already understood this, remember she was still the emperor’s concubine and due to appearances and how politics work he still spent some nights with her while not as often as the other concubines due to how he could not tell who she was

Now you know why I think that Shisui is Loulans true personality. Or better, Loulan is just Shisuis cover to get inside the rear palace. Also you are going to find out why Suirei is so deathly afraid of snakes.

Yeah, this is sort of what I was getting at in the missing section of my original comment. So, yeah. Loulan has been wiping out her OWN contributions to the Imperial Bloodline... which doesn't necessarily make sense if the Shi Clan's actions are a unified power play, since producing the heir is a much safer way of solidifying the clan's power than civil war.

Is Bruce Wayne Batman or Bruce Wayne? I believe Bruce Wayne is his alter ego. The same for Loulan and Shisui I believe Loulan is her alter ego.

Those 2 guards were not guarding her i guess. Maybe only a few of them are in on it, so I think you are right that this was done by just Shisui and Suiere

I've been back and forth on it. Because I dont personally recall it being covered more intensely later and I feel like a lot of people understand what Maomao was about to tell Loulan and what it meant that Loulan knew and took it anyway.
