Hello, Patreon family! Please enjoy my detailed analysis of the Apothecary Diaries Season 2, Episode 20. I did not imagine Moon Frog Crown Prince would be forced to step up and reveal his true identity, pleaded by Lakan, Lahan, and Luomen, to save Maomao and prepare for the anticipated civil war. Wowzer!

My main takeaways from the episode

1) Team Maomao (sorry Avengers, move aside) is officially formed and prepared to go all out to do whatever it takes to either stop the civil war, which would entail countless bloodshed, or rescue Maomao in the process; or, rather, save Maomao first, then stop the civil war

2) Lakan's sharp intelligence and why he is known as the great strategist were displayed once again, with his callout of Jinshi's inaction, his exposing Jinshi's true identity, and eventually his kneeling before, humbled by Luomen the Great, as the ultimate posture of humility

3) Lady Shenmei and Shishou need to be terrified of what is to come because team Maomao is coming full throttle, and they are willing to do whatever it takes, and it happens to be one of the most powerful factions in the dynasty; who is the true culprit, however?!

Happy new week, everyone, and until next week!

PS., For Yappers, Rascal Does Not Dream will officially drop on 8/23 as the new Yapper-only series~

I thibk eventually Jinshi would have recognized his duty to quell the rebellion. But its clear his true push to step into his roles came from his personal desire to save Maomao. I wonder how much longer he would have tried to solve things as Jinshi... rather than accept his role. If not for Maomao. I said it before. Maomao is one of the top most influential people in this nation, she just will never accept it. Tho maybe its that clear distaste for such things, that makes her so trusted by those in power

4:03 Yes, please keep sharing your thoughts on the characters, it's a TV show, and we don't just like seeing your professional self, your personal side is interesting, too! 46:13 One of the most censored scenes in the anime, I will not give away any detail, but its so much more explicit in LN 51:00 That dialogue of Lakan its an innuendo (I think this is the correct word but im not english native speaker so srry if its misused), he knew it wasn't Jinshi who was there on the day of the argument with Shishou, he knows it was Ah Duo. And of course, it also works as a double entendre, calling out Jinshi for acting like a woman, that is, in a cowardly way (not that I approve of it, I'm just pointing out the meaning :P). 52:01 That's right, and I'd like to add to that comment that Lakan is able to make those remarks in part because it adds another layer to his criticism of Jinshi, since Lakan isn't higher in rank than the prince, but he is higher than Jinshi the eunuch! The full La Clan are so goated, I love this group of geeks lmao

Interestingly, as you pointed out, I didn’t realize until now that Jinshi also had a massive Great Wall of Denial, on par with that of Maomao’s lol

Once again we have an episode where are opinion on a formerly hated character is flipped on its head. And from what we've seen so far Shenmai might beat out Lakan's father as the worst parent in the series. 😴

I'm a bit of a history buff and a Historical-music buff too, and the end of this episode always reminds me of a song from the Boshin war (a Japanese Civil War at the end of the Shogunate period) called "Miya-san," which is a way of addressing a Prince or Lord, and is the oldest recorded military march in Japanese history. Miya-san, Miya-san, that there on your horse, what is it there, that is fluttering in the wind? Toko-ton ya-re-ton yare-na! That is the brocade flag, declaring to the army: "The Emperor's enemies must now be destroyed!" Toko-ton ya-re-ton yare-na! "Strike down the enemies that raise their hands against the Noble Son of Heaven who rules o'er all the realm!" Toko-ton ya-re-ton yare-na! Tosa, Choshu and Satsuma's soldiers shall thus shoot unrelentingly and never miss a shot. Toko-ton ya-re-ton yare-na!

I agree with the one comment someone said that the light novel gives a lot more context as to what is going on with the parents. They give you more information as we go forward but not as much as the light novels. I know you hear us bring them up over and over but given that so much of the light novels that they can do a straight interpretation of they have but there is certain things that are much harder to fully put into words and detail the same way on "film". The author has yet again had us change our minds on certain characters once you find out their true human motivations. I know you had posted in the discord that you just saw the episode after this one and these are the episodes where if somehow you are on the fence with the show and the writing you start to see the true masterclass writing you are heading into at this point. It takes a special piece of media to want me to not only rewatch but read/take in anyway I can any little crumbs I can of this world. Buckle up it's a bumpy ride for the last few episodes of the Season and then you spiral into the black hole of do I start the light novels because I need more until Season 3 starts in October.

CervenySun

I bet you do! Isn't she a treat? 😭

I've offically finished light novels 1-4 which is what is used for Seasons 1&2. Now I debate on do I read LN5 before or after Season 3 starts, because spoilers say we are about to have out mouth on the ground yet again.

Also, I realize I haven't given a Kanji/Hanzi Update on new characters in a while, so I figured I would do that. Shishou: 子昌 (Zi Chāng, very unlike the Japanese. A lot of these name readings are from Middle-Japanese attempts to adopt words from Middle-Chinese into its own different sound system, before both diverge even further into their modern equivalents) Suirei: 翠苓 (Cuì Líng, again, very unlike the Japanese) Shisui: 子翠 (Zi Cuì, taken from both the Shi clan's character and a character from Suirei's name, which was a clue for Maomao on their way to the village) Kan Lakan: 漢羅漢 (Hàn Luó Hàn) Kan Lahan: 漢羅半 (Hàn Luó Bàn) Shenmei: 神美 (Shén Měi, "holy and beautiful," and the least fitting name in the series award goes to...) Kyou-u : 響迂 (Xiǎng Yū)

Hahaha, you heard the epic music that reminded you of an Avengers moment, but it wasn't enough..the yapping always takes over....I love it

This episode is non-stop high stakes action (well, not the traditional meaning of action, but...) but the final scene is so powerful to me. Luomen walks in, and immediately determines not just exactly what is going on but how to influence the situation for the better - yelling at Jinshi may eventually get what you want, but a plea to his authority in this way demands a formal response. And there's only one response he could possibly give with the evidence that's been presented. As for Shenmei... I see you've already watched 21. I think there's something really interesting in that episode that shows Maomao's growth, and you actually touched on it here - her survival instinct that tells her she has to keep her head down around people like Lady Shenmei. I'm excited for Bunnygirl! I actually liveblogged the first 3 episodes of this show years ago before the pressure of keeping it up got to me, so I'm excited to maybe finally finish watching it with you.

Maomao called other people "trouble" before. But as far as I can remember only in the first book. It was mostly directed at Jinshi because when he showed up at the Jade Pavillon he had always work to do for Maomao.

I also am debating at reading past book 4. The story is that good. I guess I start reading the LN of "Saga of Tanya the Evil" instead for now.

Faey

He created the whole Eunuch role for the sake of not to be the emperors brother. It was hinted in the anime but is more spelt out in the book. So yes, that is a Great Wall of Denial.

I was trying to follow along with this season alongside you, but after this episode, I just couldn't wait and binged the rest of the episodes. Lol I do agree that Bunny Girl Senpai is perfect for you. I am expecting you to need a water break during each episode because your throat will dry up from all the yapping. Lol

The La Clan Bow was my favorite scene this year both from the Light Novel and the Anime/Manga POV. Louman's role as the La Clan wrangler/mediator is repeated later in the series as well.

I think the next episode gonna be the 🐍 episode

Lakan: “How long do you intend to fool everyone with your false role, Master Jinshi? Or rather…Moon Prince? Lakan was still calling Jinshi out even while on his knees. The man truly gives (I STAN Lakan btw lol)zero f*cks!!! He demands they go save his daughter!! Moon Prince A.K.A Crown Prince Ka Zuigetzu: “It seems like it’s time for me to take charge.” He received the necessary pep talk from his potential father in law and now he’s ready!!!! The roller coaster 🎢 is no where near close to stopping and I am sooo looking forward to your reactions!! ps. I am so excited about upcoming Rascal does not dream series!!!! Thank you so much Benoit🙏

Roller coaster, here we continue!! And love when you comment more than “thank you Benoit” haha because you have a lot to offer!

I would argue that Luomen de-escalating by bringing the attention of what Lakan said to himself, also takes the attention away from Jinshi and redirects Lakan's words as to hide the true identity of Jinshi. Lakan almost, basically, yelled out loud Jinshi's real identity and Luomen redirected it.

Since the punishment would extend to the entire Shi clan, it makes one wonder what the purpose and rush are to make the resurrection potion.
