Hello, Patreon family! Please enjoy my detailed analysis of the Apothecary Diaries Season 2, Episode 21. As some of you predicted, I did crash out on the ultimate villain, Shenmei, her psychological profile, and her despicable behaviors throughout the episode, given her displayed psychopathy, and the unbelievably emotionally conflicting ending to the episode...

My main takeaways from the episode

1) Shenmei, as I pledged in the episode to not address her by her honorifics, Lady, truly is a psychopath with her charactieristics, sadistic behaviors, psychological profiling, and clinical traits: lack of remorse, cruelty without reasoning, and enjoyment of other human's suffering

2) Can we talk about Maomao's diabolical behaviors with Taibon? One of the most fearful and cruel torturing methods became an opportunity for a gourmet snake cookout and picnic

3) The episode's reveal further begets my ongonig question: Who is the ultimate culprit? Shenmei or Shishou??

Maomao never ceases to amaze me, which further reflects the author's unbelievable writing and why the series is so beloved by many of us. Also, how do you all feel about Shisui's actions and decisions to "peacefully" posion all the children in the chamber?!

Happy new week, everyone, and until next week~

P.S., the countdown begins for the final 3 episodes

This episode is very self-explanatory, there's no need to elaborate much, and yet it's such a complex piece... That's what makes this series so beautiful, the characters' moral conflicts and personalities are so realistic that it seems based on real events and people.

The moment Maomao chooses to address her as "Shisui" was such an impactful moment. One of my favorite scenes this season.

As we've all been saying.. there is no filler episodes in the Apothecary Diaries! And as far as taking out ones mother, no matter what I could never have laid a finger on my mother. 😴

My heart breaks for how pure and loving Shisui is when she gives Maomao that big smile upon hearing Maomao call her Shisui. She deserves such a better life than the one she was dealt.

Oh since I have seen the rest of the season, I got teary eyed when you bid Xiaolan farewell. She was my favorite cinnamon roll and I will miss her so much!

impactful without saying much it told an entire story. This is definitely the moment I cried in the season.

I think we all felt the same way, seeing the power of being seen for the first time

Maomao saying she smells the workshop is explained a little better in the light novels because part of how they made the ammunition was with things like bat guano because you could use it for extracting from it for saltpeter. This episode gets me every single time, even with knowing what happens with watching this show. As hard as the episode is because of what it really shows is the beauty of this show as well. This is why I keep saying this author needs to have a case study done on. She does such an amazing job of showcasing true 100% scientific facts and historical facts yet set in a fictional land so that she is able to take bits and pieces of China, Japan, Korea and so on. The fact that you can sit here and watch/rewatch/rewatch again the same episodes and feel the same level of emotions knowing what happens is a testament to this author and how she is so far ahead of everyone else.

That face is not Maomao being afraid. It's the opposite. She even has a little smile on her face. Or more a smirk. If that's the correct word for it. That scene just showed us, the viewers, how different Maomao is. Others would be reacting like Suirei. Maomao is more like "Yay, a free snack!". I don't like how the anime handles the scene. In the LN it cuts away right when the guard opens the box. Leaving the readers guessing about how Maomao is going to react. When the story turns back to Maomao, it's when she already killed and eaten most of the contents of the box. EDIT: How she made fire? She did not. There is a torch in the room with her. EDIT2: I should whatch the episode to the end and then write. She explained it herself. Duh.

Yes, Suirei is the granddaughter of the pedophile Emporer, so she is Jinshi's cousin

Maomao: *enacting the greatest meme* Maomao: You think I'm trap in here with you. *pulls out hair-sticks* YOU'RE trap in here with me. Yes, this is one of many great scene in this episode. "Shisui" being a very close sceond.

The microexpressions in this show are really something else. When Kyou-u drinks the poison knowingly in the flashback, you see Shisui's lip tremple as she holds in her emotions. She really is one of my favorite characters. In a different flashback, when Shenmei is raging about the insult to herself from both mother and daughter, I think we get a glimpse of the source of rage she uses to justify her actions. Shisui names Taihou as "the previous emperors first victim" and Shenmei's lady-in-waiting... Lady Anshi was also her sister's lady-in-waiting when she met the previous emperor. I'm sure he never even glanced in Shenmei's direction, considering his terror towards adult women - since she returned from the rear palace, he definitely never touched her. I wonder who she hates most.

100%, I’ve never see any other show (not just anime) that masterfully portrays micro expressions and psychological accuracy such as this in recent years, unbelievable!

In the light novels, the emperor visits his granddaughter once, giving her a phoenix emblem like Jinshi wears. The Emperor's mother was the one that didn't want to acknowledge the daughter and had the doctor and baby thrown out of the palace.
