Hello everyone! I hope you enjoy my detailed psychological analysis of episode 1 of Avatar: The Last Airbender! As always, I walked into the series completely blind, only knowing about this being an absolute classic, the latest live-action release on Netflix, and vaguely about the elemental powers that exist in the show.

The pilot episode did not disappoint, with packed psychological concepts, relationship dynamic, and the costs of children bearing the burden of adults. I can already tell I will enjoy the series, so I hope you enjoy along as well~

My main takeaways from the episode

1) Hope is not merely optimism but a necessary surviving strategy to help us preserve our sense of self, against a loss of control, to ultimately protect against hopelessness

2) Anger can be viewed as an assertive energy, as a heightened psycho-physiological state, as long as we do not become reactionary while being angry; all emotions serve a purpose

3) Play and playfulness serve important equilibrium functioning, with tremendous psychological and de-stressing benefits; at the same time, we need to make sure we are not using play as avoidance mechanism

Happy weekend, everyone, and I hope you all have a meaningful week to come~

P.S., the pilot episode is open access for all members as always

P.P.S., Our content schedule is absolutely stacked with the Apothecary Diaries Season 3 coming out in October, Rascal Does Not Dream, and now Avatar The Last Airbender :)

Hell ya!! Hope you do the new paramount movie animated movie after the main show here!! I know that's a long time away since this is the first episode of the show but a lot of the remakes and movies are bad BUT the animated paramount one is the only one that stands up to this OG show! :)

So excited to see you really dive into this show. I was 8 years old when this show aired, so this series really means a lot to me, as I was more or less the target demographic. On that note, Earth is the best because I remember I wanted to be an Earthbender the most at that age, and I have no further justification.

Gate

wow gonna be a long journey

AnimeLover101

I hope you'll watch the movie once you finish the series. You'll love it

Although its spelled Sokka think of its as pronoun like Socka Like socks and shoes? The Orginal creators confirmed this pronunciation! A Mnightshamala movie is the only one that pronounced like soaka and every one was Mad lol! But its because they draw LOTS of connection from other cultures but it is English in first language :) if its easier to pronounce it like soaka that fine! Just knowing the difference is good enough :) 💚🤍🖤

Really looking forward to your analysis of this series. Judging by your reactions of other anime, you will be blown away by the character writing in this series. Every character is so complex and relatable in one way or another. Enjoy the ride!

Manny

I love how you bring up the archetypal hero

Lizzie✨

I’m so excited for this🔥

Manny

Also “the world telling them their burden and responsibility before they are able know who they are” honestly you just explained the entire crux of the show immediately

Manny

You’ll understand why Aang asked her that when you hear his backstory

Zach

The arrow tattoos mean they mastered air bending

Zach

at a young age, yeah. He was basically a prodigy. It doesn’t really spoil much

One of my favorite shows! you're in for a great time!

Symbolic Remnant

28:20 So to help you out without giving too much away too early, all the cultures in Avatar are primarily inspired by cultures found in Asia or Pre-Colombian North America. Most are blends of multiple such cultures. The Fire nation may take inspiration in part from a certain Asian country that embraced industrialized military tech faster than the rest, but it wouldn’t be the only source of their cultural inspiration, nor even the clear primary one. The Animals are also hybrids in almost all cases: Such as the Flying Bison (Mix of Bison and Manatee, larger than both) and the Otter-Penguin, as we see in Episode 1.

Psychotherapist Reacts

Appreciate this, Symbolic! You’re gonna be busy with all these added context with ATLAB and AD s3 haha

Without spoiling anything for you, this show taught me a lot about life, peace, and dealing with addiction. You’re in for a ride.

I subscribe to your patreon when I saw your first video out on YouTube. I’m absolutely mind blown that you’ve been able to accurately clock every character so early on into the story.

You asked what type of bender the audience would like to be. When I was a child I wanted to be a fire bender. As an adult, I really want to be an Airbender for mobility reasons. The sheer application of the skill. Imagine being a courier and being able to fly from city to city. Imagine being a nomad and living with only what you had on you.

Abraham Perez

I love the reactions, and every time I see you pause right before you get the answer makes 😂

Symbolic Remnant

“Slur” may be a slight overstatement (slur implies pejorative intent being the baseline use) with it being more just antiquated/out of favor for not distinguishing differences between different far northern groups (Inuit vs Yup’ik vs Aleut)

Hi, I'm new here. ATLA is my favorite show of all time, is objectively one of the best TV shows of all time, and is just so beautiful and meaningful in so many ways. I'm also currently working on my Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and for one of my classes I'm working on a presentation about the development of Prince Zuko through a developmental psychology lens, which is super fun. I'm a firebender (not metaphorically, I'm actually a fire performer), so fire is obviously my favorite element. I love watching first-time reactions of my favorite shows because I get to live vicariously through them

Psychotherapist Reacts

Oh wow your background is so cool! And I have a lot to say about Zuko in ep 11-12 and 13-14. Welcome and enjoy, Raven :)

-"Emotions allow us to break through what's frozen" - beautifully stated! -I fully agree and think it's so important not to demonize anger. Anger is like fire -- it can be both creative/productive, fueling a passionate pursuit of justice and taking action to create necessary change, and even more importantly it can transform through necessary destruction, clearing away that which doesn't serve our best interests. -Lol Aang had no idea he was in the ice for that long, all he sees is a pretty girl and wants to be friends in that first moment when he opens his eyes, that's all he knows. I also think his playfulness is a major aspect of his culture; the Air Nomads are modeled after the Tibetan Buddhist monks -I always joke that none of these characters have any bones in their body because they're always somehow unscathed after falling or getting knocked around in ways that would likely result in broken bones in real life -Lol I got goosebumps at the exact same time you said you got goosebumps! -"You're not going to fight against Mother Nature herself" very true, but if anyone is capable of putting up a fight, it's definitely the Avatar -The Water Tribe is modeled after the indigenous Inuit people -The arrows are a rite of passage, signifying that one has mastered airbending -THE PENGUINS ARE SO CUTE -"You still are a kid!" - this line always gets me -"If you want to be a bender, you have to let go of fear" - not necessarily! As we saw after he said that, fear serves an important function, to avoid very real danger...we just need to learn to differentiate between actual vs. perceived danger -I think in this first episode, the real impact of the grief and loss doesn't really sink in...in the next one it certainly does -I fully agree that looking for the silver lining or the "bright side" can be very dismissive, I'm glad you said that! -I'm impressed by how much you have been able to analyze from just the first episode, it just gets so much better and more intricate, layered and profound as the series goes on!
