Hello, Patreon family! Please enjoy my detailed analysis of Apothecary Diaries Season 2, Episode 24. I was honestly surprised by how much I yapped in the season finale, because on the surface, it felt like a low-action, low-key episode since last week's episode seemed like the climax. The author delivers with the perfect ending to the "new beginning," however.

My main takeaways from the episode

1) A massive shoutout to the Apothecary Diaries series for sharpening my prediction and observational skills compared to when I first started; what a rebirth of Loulan / Shisui

2) I cannot wait to see the triumphant return of Shisui, or shall we say Tamamo, in season 3, and her role and implications in the overarching plot; Will she join the Emperor's faction??

3) Our poor, and sexually frustrated, Moon Prince is yet cockblocked again for the third time, but the emotional (and physical) closeness between Prince Ka and Maomao must not be underestimated, which is only possible with established emotional and psychological safety

4) Our home is where the heart is, and we all know where Jinshi's heart is: Wherever Maomao is. As a result, the pleasure district has now become one of the safest places in the nation, which hopefully means decreased abuse and trauma in the area due to increased visibility

What a beautiful and thrilling journey this has been, from the beginning of season 1 to the season finale of one of the greatest seasons I have ever witnessed~ Truly, peak!

I will react to Alien Stage, a popular YouTube short-video / music video series, during our awkward 2-week break until the highly anticipated season 3 drops on October 2!

Hope you all enjoy :)

There was 1 cut line that stood out to me, in the book, when the boy Interupts them, Jinshi says to himself that he should have had the boy executed. I guess they thought that line would make him seem to mean, but It made me laugh when reading.

Last time summary! (until october at least) 0:37 the very beginning of the OP symbolizes Maomao's tear falling onto Xiaolan's letter, and then cuts to a shot of Maomao's face in profile with her eyes covered, a beautiful detail. 30:10 What i understood is that Maomao was aware but she didn't want to say it out loud or get her hopes up in case she was wrong, as a way of protecting herself. 34:37 i think thats the most explicit consent we will get form Maomao lmao, honestly after all her trauma and cognitive dissonance this feels like a massive win lmao 41:40 Technically, she was hired by “Jinshi,” who is actually a fictional character, so her contract is null and void to begin with. On top of that, now that it’s public knowledge that Maomao is Lakan’s daughter, she can’t simply go back to working as an lady in waiting, it would create a conflict of interest, since the La Clan doesn’t belong to any specific faction. 45:07 Chou-u was the only one who was allowed to live freely, it's a bit ironic, his memory loss gave him the key to not having to live under constant surveillance, unlike the other children. 51:10 Maomao crying hit different man... 56:06 In the novels, they make it clearer. In the anime it would have been difficult to adapt, but basically at this point, Maomao is emotionally shattered, and no wonder: she was kidnapped, physically abused and her friend died. On top of that, she wouldn’t be able to see Xiaolan again, and just when Luomen is in the palace, she has to be away, and on top of all that, she won’t be as close to Jinshi as she used to be (all of this is mentioned or implied more clearly in the source material). Of course she’s sad, and what does Maomao usually do to avoid facing reality and her emotions? self-harm. If you really think about it, this is Maomao's lowest point, at least from what we've seen so far in the story. 1:02:49 "Human saliva can be poisonous sometimes" I wonder WHO likes poison more than anyone else in the world... hmm... yeah sure girl, there are times when it's really obvious that she's just lying to herself 1:07:34 Idk if you noticed, look at the hairpin, it has a bullet hole in it.

A nice little touch you can see is the dent in the hair stick where it took the bullet for Shisui. As for the Western equivalent of a non crown Prince and princess marrying the closest I can think of would be archduke and duchess. Always a little jarring to hear my name said out loud on something I'm watching 😂 finally got discharged from the hospital yesterday and I'm feeling much better. And finally 😴 becomes 😊

This is why we said that this show is so special and it's hard to explain with words even as a yapper what makes it so special. There as so many things that happen and yet don't happen at the same time that makes you stop and pause. Then even with watching/rewatching and rewatching again you pick up on new things. Then when you rewatch after watching say now both Seasons you see little Easter Eggs that you didn't pick up on when you 1st watched the show. Even now technically being ahead of the anime and knowing what is coming for Season 3 because I needed to read the light novels while we wait I see things I would not have noticed. While I have not read all 16 light novels so far I can say that so far unfortunately there is no return of Loulan/Shisui. Many people have theorized that the name the author gave to Shisui at the end of Tamamo comes from the Japanese mythology of Tamamo-no-Mae. Which also adds to the conversation of just the levels that the author is willing and able to put into every little detail of the light novel, manga, anime, and soon to be live action of this story. The fact that the movie coming in December is written by her and supposed to cannon along with the video game coming in 2027 is another story written by the author that is supposed to interconnect. It almost becomes more fascinating analyzing the author's mind of being able to not only keep track of the story she is writing to trail out details over multiple seasons and interconnect them in ways you didn't see coming but also historical and medical facts as well.

Perfectly said lol one of the only shows that I’ve seen where I realized, a rewatch is a must, not a choice

SarithaKabila

100% my friends and I are trying to figure out a plan of rewatching. We have already said we are in agreement we must at least rewatch 1 episode before the new episode each week at Season 3 comes out.

Psychotherapist Reacts

Hahaha yeah gotta give shoutouts where they’re due, and yeah WOW the bullet hole dent is crazy….unbelievable and such attention to detail

SarithaKabila

Happy you are finally home from the hospital, just in time for Season 3 <3

Levanah

I’ve seen this episode at least four times, and I never noticed that bullet hole. Wow. Just wow.

Commenting and editing as I watch so I don't forget anything... 20:21 - The phrase Jinshi uses is "襲われたのか" which literally translates to "Were you attacked?" but there's important cultural context: this is the phrasing (the word "osou" for attack) used in news articles and on TV when discussing sexual assault, so it has become a euphemism. When a young girl is asked this question it is assumed to be about sexual assault and not just physical violence. That interpretation by Maomao also ties to her time in the pleasure district, her constant on-guard mentality around Jinshi, and her subconscious awareness of Jinshi's protectiveness 40:55 - She's back in the pleasure district for a few reasons: 1) Luomen supercedes any "legitimate" need for her presence in the rear palace; 2) she's not really fit to be, nor wants to be, a lady in waiting for the empress; 3) Jinshi, having revealed his status as the moon prince, isn't able to have her around just for fun anymore given his position and visibility 50:00 - My interpretation of "Xiaolan isn't..." was that Maomao is relieved because she now knows that her friend found gainful employment and didn't have to become a courtesan or find other unsafe work; last we saw of her she was very worried about what would happen at the the of her term in the rear palace And lastly, to answer your question: As much as I love the banter between Maomao and Jinshi, I don't think anyone can beat the banter between Sakuta and Mai lol

December 11th Apothecary Diaries Movie "The Secret Treasure of the Deceased Consort" (for Japan, no release date for US or global yet)

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

He pitched a tent is what he did, or should I say what she did to him, and I think Maomao was hoping it was the resurrection medicine that Shisui used but wasn't positive about it.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

I think Maomao was thinking that xiaolan isn't in the rear palace anymore and she won't ever get to see her again when she said she isn't..

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

I am sure that Suirei and everyone else thinks Shisui is dead. They couldn't know that Jinshi saved her life with his hairpin that he gave to Maomao, and give Maomao a little credit. I mean by the way she tied the pinky she obviously wasn't going to chop it all off. She just wanted to know if it would grow back like when it did as a baby. I can tell you the answer is mostly yes. When I cut off some of my left thumb . About 95% of it grew back. I had no idea that this is a thing. I can only tell some of it didn't grow back by comparing it to my other thumb.

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

I was 51 when it happened, but in my mind 1 am still a child.

Maddy Jabara

You may not remember, but the first time you brought up Jinshi taking medication to make himself more feminine you mentioned that it probably also affects his libido… I told you that would come back into play. He is no longer pretending to be a eunuch, so he has stopped taking hormone suppressants. As you can see his libido is coming back in full force, and he struggles to remain composed while he figures out how strong his hormones can be as a healthy 19 year old! Also Maomao is rightfully a princess. She is a clan princess as the daughter of Lakan and her parents are married now to make her legitimate. She is in a similar position as Loulan except that Loulan was a high ranking consort. Lakan and Shishou are two of the pillars of the empire, so even without potentially marrying Jinshi, she is a clan princess in her own rights, even if it’s part of her Great Wall of denial!

Psychotherapist Reacts

Wow that’s a deep callback, Maddy, and you’re right—Maomao is a legitimate princess!

JAMES D'ALESSANDRO

It was my thumb. I cut almost half of what's above the knuckle off on a weird angle. It looked like I put it on a meat slicer. I had to clean the area often and buy a box of a special bandage that wouldn't stick to the area where the cut was that included half of my thumbnail and try to keep it above my heart wherever possible I thought I was just waiting for some skin growth but the nail and most of the thumb grew completely back. It was very tender for a few years but 10 years later it's almost the same as my other thumb. I never asked if it would grow back and the Dr never said it would. I met someone who had a similar injury and most of his grew back as well. His injury was also above the top knuckle on one of his fingers.

AnimeLover101

Actually in Li (the country), the only way for a child to be considered legitimate, regardless of the mother's background, status or how the child came to be, was for the father to acknowledge the child. So since Lakan had already acknowledged her, MaoMao was already the princess of the La Clan even before her folks were married. It's just MaoMao didn't want it

AnimeLover101

I’m so glad that you finished watching it before season 3 comes out! Since you finished it, can you maybe watch these two new animes? I mean, they’re new to you, Fruits Basket 2019 and Made in Abyss, I especially want your thought and diagnosis on Fruits Basket. There’s two of them but watch the Fruits Basket 2019 one not the 2001 one. The 2019 is better, it completed the whole manga and there’s even a movie. Both animes have English Dubbed and both have movies that are in English. It’s just there's a certain order that you need to watch them. For Made in Abyss, watch season 1 first, then the movie, and then season 2 otherwise you’re going to get confused. I learned that lesson the hard way LOL. For Fruits Basket 2019, watch all the 3 seasons and then the movie. Also, can you PLEASE watch Fruits Basket 2019 in English dubbed, trust me it’s more emotional in English. Just two little heads-up, you’re going to need an Amazon subscription for tissue paper when you watch Fruits Basket 2019 and you’ll need a strong stomach for Made in Abyss.

Maomao shedding a tear for Xiaolans letter hit me so hard. I realized at that moment that she had never really shown her emotions in that way before. It showed just how much she really adored Xiaolan and Shisui, and now they're both gone from her life. Perhaps she is upset because she didn't get the chance to say goodbye.

lsa

I can't wait for season 3!!!!!!!

lsa

Like I said before, that hairpin could stop a bullet!

Dragons like Bananas

Maybe I'm being too optimistic but I hope Ah-duo and Suire can build some type of bond. Ah-duo, a woman who has always liked children and "lost"/wasn't able to raise her own child watching over Suirei who is the same age as her child (a few months younger than Jinshi) Similarly. Suirei , a girl who lost her mother at a young age and suffered so much abuse having Ah-duo who is the same age as her mother (only a year difference) and so kind / maternal watching over her. Like I said perhaps like I'm too optimistic, but I can't help seeing the parallels.

Psychotherapist Reacts

I hope as well, and I think they will because of how kind hearted and heartbroken they both are!! I’m sure they’ll have some trauma bonding in a healthy way!

Ginko 13

I think you would like the show Morbito also!!

Ginko 13

It has the deep, slow-burn palace politics of The Apothecary Diaries, but set in a world where ancient spiritual folklore is terrifyingly real. It follows a spear-wielding warrior on a self-imposed mission of balance—saving lives to atone for a bloody past—who is thrust into protecting a marked prince!

Ginko 13

Its a bit older (2007) but I think it hold up well and would be a great addition to the channel!

Ginko 13

The series stands out for its mature, slow-paced storytelling, avoidance of fan service, and relays on realistic action choreography!

Ginko 13

Moribito feels more grounded in many way but more fantastical is other ways compared to apathicary but it too is a unique case because it is actually a blend of pan-Asian traditions and indigenous folklore, structured through the lens of cultural anthropology. While it is written by a Japanese author and captures a distinctly Japanese tone, its mythological foundation is heavily pulled from indigenous Ainu traditions and broader East Asian/Himalayan cultures rather than mainstream Japanese Shinto folklore or stereotypical animes shock

Psychotherapist Reacts

Oh fascinating. Yeah slow paced classics is a gamble for YouTube due to low engagement but maybe for my personal watch or Patreon if enough interest from our community

Ginko 13

Ya I feel that! It would be a patreon great show. Personally I think YouTube it could go well but I get that its much harder to know. It would be worth a watch Personally at least but hope to see it on patreon too! :)

Puiu

Such an amazing show. Can't wait for season 3!!!!

Maran

Now I really want to watch it!

Ginko 13

You should! Its good! Worth it for sure!

Maran

I agree that the 2019 is much better than the 2001. D&D players might be interested to know that the English VA for Haru, the same in both versions, is Laura Bailey of Critical Role.
