Hello everyone! I hope you enjoy my psychological analysis of episode 9 of Avatar: The Last Airbender! I love how the series beautifully spotlights all characters and their personal development and emotional growth, not only Aang and his hero's journey.

My main takeaways from the episode

1) If the last episode was about Aang reconnecting with Avatar Roku and blowing away low-life Zhao and Fire Nation soldiers with unmatched power, then this episode was about the other side of the equation—how other characters may feel, in particular, how Katara feels overshadowed by Aang's main character energy at times

2) Speaking of Aang's MC energy, his prodigious learning is beyond impressive, from mastering Katara's 2-month-long technique in mere seconds to incorporating his new waterbending techniques into his airbending style, only 4 episodes after Bumi's encouragement and lessons; truly MC aura all the way

3) Katara and her displayed emotional growth are beautifully spotlighted throughout the episode, from initial unawareness, an understandably selfish urge to steal the scroll, and eventually bloomed awareness with mature apologies (sorry, Sokka, mainly to Aang)

What would you have done if you were in Katara's situation with the stolen scroll?

Until next week :)

I think Katara is being particularly unfair to herself with comparisons here. Aang may be completely untrained in water bending, but he was already considered a master airbender before he was frozen. Basic principles of bending that Katara has had to teach herself without aid are already ingrained for him due to direct tutelage from another master bender. And air and water both flow, both move naturally in currents... im sure there's a lot of overlap.

I think what katara failed to understand is that although Ang doesn’t master water bending, he is still an air master, so he is not new to bending itself. 🫡

Also, the scene with Katara and Zuko with the necklace launched a thousand teen girls into shipping Katara and Zuko together. There were apparently *massive* shipwars on livejournal during the airing of this show

And finally: After finishing the last airbender series, Iroh is especially a treat on rewatch knowing more of the backstory than we do now.

Psychotherapist Reacts

For sure! Most of our compassion is unfair and skewed based on our unfair self-judgment

Dull

What i really love about this series is that they acknowledge both the strengths and weaknesses in its characters and portrays them in a way that they feel like real people. People that we get to form an opinion on and love or hate for whatever it's worth. We see them unfold and the growth of gaining insight into who they are, what they stand for and still leaving an opening for our opinion to sit with it and breathe for a moment, it's beautiful story telling

Dull

I recommended my therapist to watch atla a few months back. He absolutely loved it. I just recommended him your yt playlist, because i know he would enjoy your insight as much as i do ❤ you do this like few others and thank you for it

Symbolic Remnant

Uncle Iroh losing track of his Lotus Tile is legitimately an emergency of potentially catastrophic proportions. It’s a good thing he found it.

Katara is 14! Aang is 12, Sokka is 15, and Zuko is 16.
