Hello, everyone! I am battling jet lag, but nothing will stop me from watching episode 4. I also heard some folks online attacked Maomao for being harsh with the two sisters in last week's episode. I'd agree with them, but then we would both be wrong.

My main takeaways from the episode

1) How are we going to start the episode with the White Lady and her stepping out of the shadow? The best welcome-back gift I could have asked for after visiting Maomao's hometown in China

2) Jinshi eating the fried grasshopper off Maomao's hand is one of the most emotionally intimate moments they shared since the controversial cave incident; except, the difference is, there are no more secrets between them, Jinshi's true identity has been revealed, and Maomao is aware of Jinshi's feelings for her; things are getting spicy

3) I walked away from the episode with more questions than answers, which is how we know the season is picking up its steam. Is the White Lady seriously going after the dynasty's backbone of agriculture, weakening its infrastructure through the opium war, and distracting the top officials through immortality alchemy?

Also, the cliffhanger for the next episode, White-Snake Immortal, is absolutely crazy, especially given the famous Chinese folklore: [The Legend of the White Snake (Chinese: 白蛇传; pinyin: Báishé Zhuàn) is one of China's four great folktales, tracing its roots to Tang and Song dynasty oral traditions before being famously compiled and popularized during the Qing dynasty. ]

I hope I don't spoil myself with the knowledge of the Legend of the White Snake...

Until next week :)

Ah-Duo being the most aura farming character in a show with Maomao, Jinshi and Lakan wasnt in my 2026 bingo This episode brings another layer of complexity to episode 2x16, just in case it wasn't an important enough (We see Maomao find the third volume of Insects and think to herself that it doesn't make sense for Shisui to own such an expensive book, just before she was kidnapped, in addition to the incredible scene of the confrontation between Lakan and Shishou) What a great observation, noting how Maomao is distancing herself somewhat to help maintain her denial of everything that happened. Being in the rear palace right now would only remind her of Xiaolan and Shisui. Plus, it doesn’t help that she’d be closer to Jinshi, and now their relationship isn’t the same, she’s put a safe distance between them that puts almost all her emotional problems on hold. "Freaking yapping gold mine" is a personal new favorite:) Totally agree, she may not be deeply in love with him yet, but she doesn't act toward anyone else the way she does with him, and above all, we can count on one hand the number of people with whom Maomao feels comfortable enough to be her true self, I think the most accurate description right now is that she feels physically attracted and emotionally secure with him. "Maomao your digging yourself a deeper hole" Poor Jinshi, how could he not be confused by the queen of mixed signals? Impressive, you caught up the Lakan-Fengxian parallel in Pimp Granma's reaction in the moment, it took me longer Maomao described the complete opposite of Jinshi, she’s been confronted more and more directly about Jinshi, and it’s easier to see through her wall of denial. The reason Pairin gives Maomao that look is because, as you rightly said, at this point everyone knows, and she’s disappointed that Maomao won’t admit the truth. If we think about it from Pairin’s point of view, it makes sense, she’s a courtesan, and her job doesn’t allow her to have complete control over who she spends her time with or who she’ll spend the rest of her life with, at least not right now. From her perspective, Maomao might be wasting this opportunity, and right after that, we see Joka’s perspective, which acts as a counterpoint and gives more meaning to the internal debate that Maomao is avoiding having with herself. I agree, I also thought it looked like mercury. It's interesting that they animated it that way. I have no idea what it could be, tbh, but of course the officers were taking much larger amounts than she was lol Im glad that you had a great, well deserved vacation, welcome back!

The author and animators have said you have been around this world long enough we are taking the kid gloves off with how we will be approaching things from here on out. This is only episode 4 and we have so many different threads/deep plots that we are following. From what I have seen we are getting 12 episodes in Core 1 and 12 episodes in Core 2 so the same 24 episode season as we have in Seasons 1 and 2 even with the movie coming soon. From reading the light novels I can confirm there is ALOT to come. I do agree with the previous comment of Pimp Granny trying to make sure if history is going to repeat itself, that as much as Maomao is in a different position as her Mom was, she is still getting the feelings of someone at the top of the pyramid of the dynasty. As you were talking about certain things I was like oh he's about to lose his mind. I CAN NOT wait for the things that are to happen this season and to see your reaction/analysis. I'm glad you did have this to look forward to on your return home, hopefully you get some much needed sleep after your vacation as there is for sure something to be said to need that vacation after vacation.
