Hey all,

Use this thread to drop off your Patreon Q&A question for this month. Just one question per patron, please.

I'm going to start answering the questions this weekend, so I should have the video out and recorded by the 10th of the month.

Did you know we've been doing this for a year now? I just checked, and my first monthly Q&A was for June 2020. A lot has changed since then.

You can view previous Q&As with this playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL3lJFzNSaN7SE7AAWRLGyfnf4S2oONOm-

What do you make of Yoan Moncada? Do you think he has the chance to be an MVP candidate this year?

Victor Fucci

Do we have to start talking about Degrom as one of the best pitchers ever? All though he hasn't had the traditional 7 year peak yet, what he's done from 2018-pres. has to be some of the best pitching we've ever seen, especially considering his velocity. Thoughts Bailey?

Brendan Gruenberg

Me and my brothers are huge red sox fans while my dad is a huge cubs fan. Before the season we were debating which team would have the better season. I didn’t think that W/L record was the best metric to judge a teams success given the cubs play in a weaker division. What is the best metric to judge a teams overall success?

Will

Hey Foolish, In your opinion, which 2008 mid-season acquisition truly did more for their team down the stretch that year: C.C. Sabathia for the Brewers, or Manny Ramirez for the Dodgers? 2008 was one of my first years really diving deep into baseball, and I just remember both guys getting absolutely scorching hot for their teams, and it really made for an exciting second half. Curious to see your take on who added more value

SmoothCriminal12

Do you think the Cubs will be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline?

Ethan

What is the best playoff series of the past 10 years in your opinion?

Sean

With the shift in the game towards openers, relief specialists, and shorter starts, do quality starts still have utility as a stat? Any ideas for how to improve on pitching stats with changes in the game, GPP?

Bo Brown

With Ken's article about how Atlanta will most likely have to pay out Ozuna's contract, do you think it will be mentioned in the agreement next year? I know players and the union really love and want guaranteed money, but I'm sure most players will say he doesn't deserve that anymore. Could we see "moral clauses" or is it more of an "every now and again this happens" and keep the current structure?

The Rangers finally have an exciting player to call their own in Adolis Garcia, but one look at his Baseball Savant can tell you that he’s got a serious issues with chasing balls out of the strike zone as well as swinging and missing. History tells me that sluggers like him with abysmal plate discipline usually fade quickly as the league catches up to them. Given the fact that he’s 28, how should we best enjoy his play while it lasts?

Patrick Hennessy

if a team wins then are they better? i honestly disagree.

Lucas Berg

Do you think this yankees core is going to win a World Series? if not then when is the time to blow it up?

Jacob Lazare

Hey Bailey! I'm hoping that there are no labour related work stoppages in MLB next season, but I'm going to ask a pessimistic question. If a season were to be lost, which team could end up like the '94 Expos? A championship contender that ended up getting torn apart for financial or other reasons.

Tom Landry Jackson

Ever watch any MiLB TV? It's cheap, you can watch Wander Franco or your teams prospects, the other day I saw Ronald Acuna's little brother hit a double for the Down East Wood Ducks.

Paul

How might the current very high injury rate affect CBA negotiations this offseason? Could/should teams be doing more to keep their players healthy?

Ev

hi mr. foolish. this question might be a different topic than things you normally cover, but i am curious if you have any thoughts about how baseball (esp MLB) reflects and embodies other aspects of our social system, particularly economic and political trends. i think a lot about how the rise of analytics and sabermetrics in mlb front offices came around the same time when consulting firms (bain and mckinsey) and venture capital/hedge funds rose to dominate our economy over the past two decades, as they use a ton of spreadsheets and statistic analysis to figure out how to cut the smallest costs in ways comparable to front offices (they also better exploit labor and do other evil things but that’s not relevant). this is less applicable to baseball (maybe moving the all star game) but the way sports have more recently embraced the slogans of black lives matter and other progressive movements as a superficial way to show support while in reality ignoring the issue or entirely contributing, as a sort of PR misdirection to stay in cultural favorability at the moment is expedient to do so. i’m also fascinated by the owners and curious as to how someone like steve cohen will apply some of the things he learned from the financial sector to change the mets and if other teams will follow similarly. this one is galaxy brained but maybe trump breaking all the political norms set a cultural precedent that is leading to baseball collectively agreeing to abandon bullshit unwritten rules?? who knows i know it’s very tired to bring up jon bois in the weird baseball corner of the internet, but to me the best part of that documentary was how he used the seattle mariners as a mechanism to understand massive socioeconomic changes and cultural shifts. the stark raving sports wilpons video does something similar. and i feel like you have hinted at some thoughts in your videos but i could be entirely projecting. obviously everyone here will not agree with some of the above political takes and diagnoses of what’s going on (im very much a lefty so). i know this post was very incoherent but i am just generally curious if you have thought about this and if there are any other parallels btw MLB and politics/economic/social changes that you think about? thanks and keep up the incredible work! your stuff is some of the most creative and intellectually interesting work i have ever seen applied to sports, jon bois included.

Ballah

There has been a lot of drama around players breaking the unwritten rules of baseball recently. Do we know when these unwritten rules were started? Have there been other players in the past that have broken these rules? I’m not handy enough with baseball statistics to be able to find this. It’d be interesting to find out that Babe Ruth hit 20 HRs on a 3-0 count, or if Rickey Henderson stole 100 bases while up 5+ runs past the 7th inning. Thank you!

Keegan Tatum

How do you avoid over-pressuring yourself to upload videos more frequently? I've been struggling with this for my (not baseball) channel. Like you, I upload videos less frequently than channels that cover the same subjects, but I put more time into editing. Love your videos. Happy to be a new patron.

Hey Bailey, Sorry if some variation of this question has already been asked. My question is do you see the 2017 Astros cheating scandal greatly affecting the eligibility of their players ever possibly going into the hall of fame. Of course currently they seem to be despised for the lack of punishment they received. However, if someone like Jose Altuve hits 3000 hits in his career, or George Springer leads the Blue Jays to 3 championships do you see them having trouble getting into the hall of fame much akin to the current situation with 2000's steroid users? Do you think the public court of opinion will ever allow for anyone on the team to be a hall of famer?

Josh Getto

What now defunct baseball team has the most interesting story about why they folded? (Aside from the Spiders)

Tanner Kingery

If the Cubs are still in 1st place at the break, how does that change Jed Hoyer's approach to the expiring contracts of Rizzo, Bryant and Baez? The Cubs certainly aren't making his job easier as they continue to win.

Mitchell Israel

What's your approach to All Star Game voting? Do you have a bias towards Braves players? What stats do you like to use to determine who you vote for. If you don't personally partake, what advice would you give to ASG voters?

Riley Nahlik

If you got to add a new award to be given out at the end of the year, what would you choose and why? And, if you feel like it, who would the favorites for those awards be? My first thoughts were a utility gold glove (say a player that plays fewer than ~60% of their games at a given position) or a best bench player (similar to the NBA 6th man award, maybe someone who starts fewer than ~90 games or so)

Wyatt Huggins

What do you think is the future of the catching position?

Delos Chen

Will we ever see another hitter win the triple crown?

Michael Piazza

Hey Bailey, long time/second time. Hope you’re doing well, really love the shirt you wore in the “5 hitters/pitchers I like”videos. With the Tigers showing some real fight at various points in the year, as well as looking like the worst team of all time at various points, what do you think their timeline is to be competitive? Also what do you make of the improvements of Casey Mize and Spencer Turnbull?

Jared Natsis

If you had a time machine and a radar gun, who are the top three pitchers that you would go back and collect data on?

David D

What do you think the odds are that deGrom breaks the single season era+ record this season?

John O

I can’t really afford to be a patron (extremely limited & fixed income right now). But I just wanted to support you for a month or two to show appreciation. Q: Do you worry about losing “patrons” in this way? As in, is there some way to cancel while still making it clear I’m supportive of your work?

Angel Marquez

Are the dodgers going to go after any pitching at the deadline since they lost may?

Brian Cashman

How did you learn sabermetrics, and are there any tips you recommend? Have you ever thought about giving a crash course on sabermetrics? Thanks Mr. Bay Leaf

Cameron Arato

Hey Bailey loved the foolish 50 but curious as to when we’ll see the foolish 20000 keep up the great work !!

Collin H. Yeet

Hey Bailey! Was wondering who you think was a better player, Barry Larkin or Derek Jeter?

Levi Smith

How big of role do you think the league played in the foreign substance scandal we've all known about for so long? In my opinion they've allowed the players to operate in such a grey area for so long while pressuring them with external forces for the last couple of years ie their juiced balls. Now that it's hurt the sport they finally enforce the rules. This right before the CBA is actually the true scandal here not great pitchers adding RPMs to their pitches across the league. Just interested to see where you stand on this!

Harper-Leighton Scott

Hi foolish, I was wondering if Derek Jeter would've been better if he played somewhere else on the diamond such as 2b or 3b. Would he be as valube in those positions or less or is he best at SS

logan smith

I decided to change my question. I was wondering what you would consider your favorite trade deadline acquisition ever. I think the Brewers trading for C.C. Sabathia was my favorite.

Jake Hannon

Hi Bailey! Could you evaluate Chaim Bloom’s tenure with the Red Sox? If you had to give him a grade what would you give him? any moves stand out to you (other than the obvious one) Thanks have a great day :)

Esley Poitra

Who is on your 2021 All Star Game Ballot for this lovely Twenty Hundred and Twenty First year of our lord?

Dan Russell (Bolly)

If Jacob deGrom stays fit and continues on this form, he's a lock for NL MVP, yeah?

Nolan McDermott

Do you think the 5 doubles game is coming soon? It always amazes me that its been over 100 years of MLB baseball and there has been no 5 double game. Who do you think are some good candidates?

Taylor Mazzocchi

Hey Foolish! Couldn't really think of anything for this month (I need to start writing them down when I think of them so I don't forget them), but just wanted to say I appreciate you and hope you have a great month!

Vertildr

If you can think of anything, what do you think the cause of Matt Carpenter's massive decline was? Just age? Was the shift that effective against him? His career is interesting to me. First an on base guy, with the ability to hit a lot of doubles which began to turn into homeruns with the juiced ball.

Zachary Kalker

I’m a Yankee fan, so I’m going to keep it short and simple this month: what the hell is wrong with the Yankees and what can they do to fix themselves?
