You have no idea how much this means to me. I’m unnecessarily excited about this 😂

The Real Kal-El

Didn't realize this deep in to the podcast we'd find out JPC is anti-vaxx about Sesame Street

luneth

YAYYY

Eugene Lattig

The commercial was fantastic🤣

Ron

If anyone is interested in JPC's take on Sesame Street, I'd encourage you to read Neil Postman's "Amusing Ourselves to Death". It argues that shows like Sesame Street, even if they improve a child's early learning, are ultimately damaging in that they make education and entertainment inseparable. (Disclaimer: I read the book ~10yrs ago, and it's from the '80s. I apologize if there's anything unsavory that I'm forgetting.)

There is actually a webcomic made by PetFoolery on Instagram/Twitter where Steve is trying to hunt down Blue, and Blue is like a Zodiac Killer-type.

West Everts

A sketch group I used to be in did a sketch where Steve came to help us solve a murder but dissociated every time he spoke to the audience to find the clues (loose eyeballs)

According to my mom, PBS shows like between the lions and Sesame Street and cyberchase definitely helped me learn how to read and do math. But I think jpc just doesn’t want his kid to watch Sesame Street because then the kid might think cops are friendly which is factually incorrect.

Matt Matt

New parent= super protective, anti most things. Experienced parent= thank god for tv that’s kid friendly.

GayWeiner420

Am I a crazy person? I thought Blue was a girl

Brandon Nunnery

This kind of hurt to listen to them rip apart a beloved show from my childhood 🥲

Andrea Stellberg

The Backyardigans are amazing. Every episode has a different musical genre, and I can sing most of them. Reggae, country, and the lot. Wonder Pets go to various exotic locations, and sing to the rescued pets. I think Erin would vibe with Wonder Pets.

AusTin

I totally respect JPC’s skepticism of children’s entertainment…but Erin is also right that PBS shows shouldn’t really be put in the same category. PBS isn’t selling Mountain Dew or Nerf, or anything at all. PBS is practically a socialist TV network that Republicans and general right wingers hate for even existing, which means I’d think JPC would be on board.

AusTin

Blue is a girl. Bluey is a girl. The dog in the Fallout show is a girl.

GayWeiner420

My dog is also a girl! Coincidence? Yeah, probably.

Kate

I learned the alphabet song from Sesame Street. My parents say that one day I just walked into the kitchen and sang the whole thing, and told them I learned it from Big Bird or whomever. And then I walked right back out, and they just kind of shrugged like, “ok, that’s an unexpected item off the list.”

magikarma

The best episode of Blues Clues is the one where Steve teaches you how to lucid dream

magikarma

Insane way to phrase that

bobbylovesyou

Wish they’d watched an early Steve episode. I think his shows were a lot more chill and gentle.

bobbylovesyou

Both of these were staples when my kids were growing up! They still have fond memories of Backyardagains a decade later.

Ben!

Yeah gotta see the Steve episode of the moth

Ty Zuniga

Y'all picked a bad representation of an episode of blues clues lol , love ya's podcast,

Shaun_qb

Beat me to it

Six Corrigan

I kept yelling at my phone lol SHES A GIRL!! and now i see others noticed so i feel validated lol

Cory Morgan

The phone is riiiiiinnnnginnng.

I agree with JPC for the most part other than the idea that it’s impossible to research how educational tv is affecting children. Yes, it’s impossible to perfectly control the variables of a child’s life, but that’s true of ANY research in any field. Scientists and statisticians and policy makers have been working for centuries to allow us to do research with imperfect variables. Otherwise the entire fields of psychology and anthropology and potentially biology would have to be thrown out. I think the phrase “correlations does not equal causation” has left an indelible stain in the minds of laypeople where they’re misinterpreting what that phrase means. Correlation is a super important part of research and a key factor in a lot of it.

Hey Riddle Riddle

Sure, but does correlation equal causation or is what I said actually correct? Imperfect variables can also lead to a bunch of junk research. There are plenty of studies about childhood development in the past 30 years that have been thrown out. Or at least thoroughly discredited. I’ve done a ton of reading in this field. Show me a study about tv for kids and I’ll read it but I have not been convinced from what I’ve read.

I got five minutes in and I regret being excited

riss

Even though I felt too old for it, 7 year old me was obsessed with Blue's Clues for 2 reasons: 1. The animation style was so different than anything I had ever seen before 2. The way Steve drew in that notebook..... all I wanted was the same notebook and the same crayon so I could draw the clues like Steve. And he drew them so well I was obsessed

Margaret

Blues Clues was my jam as a kid, and yes, I WAS screaming at my phone the whole time 😅

Mikal Pichot

This was a very interesting episode for me. I was born in 96 and grew up on blue's clues. I feel like the show legit helped me get inquisitive. I had my own notebook with little Pawprints and I would make my own little mysteries and walk my mom through them, or she would make little mysteries for me to put together.

William Ambervein

I got to say whatever lists you were looking at were wrong. Steve's episodes weren't trying to copy Dora the Explorer and Teletubbies and were actually like educational and made you think. It's been a long time but I also remember the time between Steve asking where the clue was and finding it was much shorter and usually the only didn't find it immediately because he was talking and being engaging.

Nick

Devastated that it was a later season that was judged. It was 100% the early seasons that were what made the show great, like Sesame Street. The older ones were created to be actually good and not just a merchandising tool... 😢

Nick

One of the other major reasons that Steve left the show was because all of the original production team that he started with had left, and the show was beginning to evolve into something different. Y'all effectively watched Mr. Rodgers but without the original host. Definitely wouldn't be the same without the person who made the whole show great.

trinity

"we can't execute this dog. It obviously knows English "

Altrucel

Kidding is absolutely amazing, just leaving that out there - peak mentioned

Altrucel

I wonder if Erin had cable as a child? She almost never brings up how she didn’t have cable as a child and could only watch PBS

Mae Faye

Please tell me that you've seen the Les mis sesame Street parody Les Mousserables (they also have a twilight parody as well). I stopped mid morning routine with my daughter to do a double take at the TV that morning.
