 From Adal:

Here’s what I was up to in December. I’d love to hear from you all, what your hands down number one recommendation from 2025 is. Movie, book, tv show, album, meal, etc. - whatever your top rec of the year might be!

TV:

Jordan Klepper Fingers the Nation: Give the Man a Prize

New Orleans: Soul Of A City

My Next Guest Needs No Introduction

Heated Rivalry (I’ve only seen the finale as Jemma insisted I watch with her. Hockey smut is here to stay)

MOVIES:

Stand By Me

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (had never seen this Jim Carey version - he’s off the fucking wall in this. Pretty good)

Mr. Bean Christmas special

The Snowman (had never heard of this but I guess it’s a big Xmas classic in the UK? Brits please confirm/deny. Very sweet and features an earworm of a song. Here’s a link if you want to watch)

Knives Out: Wake Up Dead Man

Cunk on Christmas

Fantastic Four: First Steps

Dirty Work

Borderlands

OTHER:

Music: Haruomi Hosono album ‘Pacific’

Board Games: played Hot Streak finally and it’s a blast. Also very much enjoying Pina ColaDice!

Video Games: Donkey Kong Bananza And Ball x Pit are my current obsessions

I was invited by Sandy Weisz to create a Raddle (one of my favorite daily online puzzles) which you can try and solve HERE! Also you should just add https://raddle.quest/ to your morning routine.

Jemma and I are heading to Sedona (and 1 day in Phoenix) later this month for a babymoon if anyone has any recs! We’re hoping to get out to Monument Valley at some point but we’ll see what time allows.

Adal

FROM JPC:

Hey Riddiots -

Hope everyone had a great holiday! Mine was nice and relaxing. I saw Avatar in 4DX, which was great. I also saw a movie called Ballad of Wallis Island from last year that I very much enjoyed. Finally finished my 16th Gaunt's Ghosts Warhammer 40k novel, which means I am free, and then immediately moved on to reading Life After Cars: Freeing Ourselves from the Tyranny of the Automobile. Would recommend the easy transition from dystopian sci-fantasy fiction to dystopian reality. Also immediately started playing Rogue Trader while I had some Holiday free-time and it's great. I don't know when I'll ever finish it.

Also thanks to everyone who came out to see a Whirled News show in 2025. It was great talking to people after the show. If you see me after a show at iO, please come and say hello!

Hope to see some of you in San Fran later this month!

Hey Adel. A movie recommendation for 2025 is Twinless staring Dylan O'Brien. It's intense, heartwarming, sad, and funny all in one movie. It is my top movie of the year for sure

Penny Wryn

I genuinely thing Ballad of Wallis Island might be one of my favorite movies of the decade so far.

Noah Lieberman

My number one recommendation of last year is Blue Prince. Adal, if you haven't played this game, you absolutely have to. I also played a lot of it with a baby sleeping on me, so might be a good one to save for later.

Paul O'Regan

The Snowman (not the Mr. Police one) is huge in the UK/Ireland, my nephew went to see it with a live orchestra this year. I'll post a video in the newsletter channel on Discord.

Kae Winters

Can confirm that The Snowman was a classic growing up as a kid in London. I was a sensitive child though (unlike the sensitive adult I grew into) and it made me weepy every time I saw it though. I was not prepared for that loss.

emma

how did i miss baby announcement?? CONGRATS you were born to be a dad, adal. my fave from 2025 was seeing MCR live. catch em next year if you can. and OBAA ruled!

Syd

ADAL/JEMMA! My fiancé and I just got engaged in Sedona! I have so many recommendations. Breakfast/Coffee: The Secret Garden Cafe and Firecreek Coffee Other Food: The one and only McDonald's without the "golden arch" (it's turquoise to honor the surrounding landscape- one of my favorite things about Sedona is that you can really see/feel that they honor the land. Look closely at the fine details of the infrastructure!) We had a 10/10 fine dinner at Pump House Station (ask to sit upstairs on the rooftop for an amazing view!) Other things to see/do: HIGHLY recommend visiting Garland's in Sedona. Ask to speak with Paul. He is a local and will give you some pretty wild book recs and local hiking/sightseeing knowledge. The shop sells vintage Navajo rugs and jewlery. In general you would adore Oak Creek and Tlaquepaque, and it's really cool to see the Sycamore trees in the desert! Broken Arrow Trail was fun. Must see Chapel of the Holy Cross. We did a day trip to Verde Canyon Railroad and it was really fun to take the scenic train. Staff began trip with a very wholesome and emotional champagne toast. Wah! (full-time foamer here) We also did a daytrip to Monument Valley, it is astonishing. Make sure your vehicle is equipped to handle rugged dirt roads! Try to visit gas stations in Navajo/Hopi territories to connect with locals and grab a local newspaper or two to bring home. Overall, let the beauty take y'all in. It is really a magical place, and feels like a privledge to experience!

Faith Quist

Oh my gosh, Raddle seems so fun! I just solved the one Adal made and am going to go through some of the archive.

Kasey K Cranfill

I second Blue Prince. It was the standout media experience for me last year. Talking ideas and puzzles with a coworker during the day then testing them out at night was too much fun. It's the closest thing I've experienced that made me actually feel like Sherlock Holmes.

Sunny K

Many congratulations to the parents-to-be! Safe travels and best wishes to you both.

TheodoraTheExplorer

My 2025 recommendation: if you're making iced coffee at home, use honey instead of sugar as sweetener. I like my coffee very slightly sweetened, but I always found sugar (even brown) somewhat alters the taste of coffee for the worse. I tried adding a tiny bit of honey to hot esresso before icing it and adding milk, and the flavors work way better.

Marilyn Papet

Congratulations Adal and Jemma!! 🎉

Dan Connolly

My recommendation for you, Adal, is The Other Valley by Scott Alexander Howard. A young girl lives in a town by a lake in a valley. Over the mountains to the east is the same town, 20 years in the future. To the west, the same town 20 years in the past. Visits between valleys are rare, anonymous, and strictly controlled to prevent interference. One day the girl recognises visitors from the East and realises her schoolfriend is going to die.

Alyxandria Richard

2025 recommendation has gotta be the one and only KPOP DEMON HUNTERS also congrats Adal and Jemma!!!!!!!!

Ryan Joswiak

Used to go to Sedona a lot when I lived in Arizona. My top recs are all food-related, because you absolutely can’t go wrong with the view from any spot in or outside of town. The Chai Spot for tea, especially if you like chai. Sedona Memories Cafe if you like sandwiches. They’re basic but big and good. Also great in Phoenix; PHX Burrito House and Thunderbird Lounge for a little 70s-styled bar. Generally for Arizona: Filiberto’s is a Mexican food institution. Their breakfast burritos are bomb. It’s in Phoenix and Sedona.

Chris Pearce

Initially it was in the review crew for advent calendars.

Chip Packet

Fionna and Cake is my top rec for shows this year. Its the only new one I've kept up but binge watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer can never do you wrong (if you go in knowing it's horrible and cheesy).

Dean Scream 717

Very good Raddle, Adal! I managed to do it with no hints!

Ravio Lee

Hiii! I don’t know if you guys caught this yet, but your Sketchfest link is directing to last year’s date and venue! (I had been very confused about whether your show was on Saturday or the 18th until I combed through the full Sketchfest schedule to confirm). Anyway, excited to see you all again this year! You’re my favorite annual tradition! :)
