The origin of the soundboard!! How far we've come

Sean Boyle

I've worked as a Game Guide for 2 separate escape room companies. Once for A summer after graduation (Escapology in the Burnsville center, would recommend fun rooms with cool themes although that mall had been dyeing for years when i worked their in 2018) then for about a year and a half (This time for The Escape Game in the Mall of America, this one I would recommend if you only care about customer experience, however they don't treat their workers the best while i was working there they had a woman who was an assistant manager being paid less than new hires because they never gave raises and they didnt allow us to discuss wages, they have been sued at least once for religious discrimination, they are a Christian owned company and they made us memorize company values, a tans woman didn't feel comfortable having to recite the value about honoring god constantly if I remember correctly. After I left one of the managers was fired for sexually harassing the same woman that was being underpaid it was an effing mess there) and speaking as someone who has probably run over 500+ games once Adal figured out that he was meant to use the bolt cutters to remove that lock and he made clear that was his intention the person running his game should have just told him to do it. especially with how not obvious that would actually be. The main job of a Game Guide is to guide you through the game. The point of escape rooms is to win. 90% of escape rooms should result in a win IMO. Like its one thing to lose because you just don't get a puzzle but this game guide heard adal clearly say that he had the answer but wanted to ensure that he was right before potentially damaging a lock (Which is insane to have as part of the puzzle in the first place locks aren't crazy expensive but damn your getting a NEW lock for every reset? that's like 2-8 locks per day even if the lock was cheap my guess is that was one of their most costly props over time. And most customers aren't like Adal at least 50% of the teams I've guided for would have absolutely tried to use those bolt cutters on every lock they found after, hell there's plenty of teams that would have tried to use it on props that aren't locks. The amount of people that I've heard genuinely ask out loud to their teammates "Should I break this do you think that's part of it?" about literally any prop is astounding and you want to give them a tool that they could cause serious injury with? Half of these people are drunk coming in there I legit wouldn't put it past some to try and remove their teammate fingers cause they thought it was funny. Honestly when I started writing this comment it was meant to be about how the Game guide that Adal had did a bad job (which they did) but the more I type about it the more I realize it probably isn't the Game Guides fault. How can you expect to be good at your job when the system that is teaching you to do it is fundamentally broken. Whoever designed that room wasn't thinking far enough ahead cause I bet you those bolt cutters where the bane of the employees experience, but also the management team that approved this idea is dumb. It speaks to a culture of incompetence at the company. A culture that also includes letting paying customers lose a game they had every right to win simply due to the negligence of the Game Guide. I bet this game guide is the type of dm that will TPK their party at level one because they were running a monster fully rules as written but didn't know how to balance it properly. I may be a bit drunk. I think I'm on Twisted Tea number 4 and counting but that story that Adal told made me feel incredulous. Fuck i haven't worked at an Escape Room since 2021. Im in the courier industry now. But damn it if I don't feel some professional pride about my past as a game guide. It sucks to see people doing a job poorly that you used to do well even if you dont do thsat job anymore.

This was great. I have done games like this before, but never these ones. I will now. There is also another one called EXIT that is fun too. Those ones you have to destroy to play so it is a one time play, but they only cost like $10.

Dang it. I had just stopped having “surf’s up, my guy. 100%” as part of my lexicon, too

Note that when JPC mentions he can't tell the drops from reality, its right after hearing his own voice. And I'm not saying Casey's Dr. Chameleon, but he did come out of nowhere wielding far too much power for one man.

I 100% feel for Erin this episode
