Andrew Wilson

Anime recommendation: spy x family

Derek E Wilkins

Cooking recommendation: replace half of the oil when making brownies with unrefined coconut oil. Taste of a mounds, texture of a brownie, amazing

Ben Champ

Why am I paying for extra ads?

Matthew Amistoso

I recommend revisiting forgotten phone notes your past self cared deeply enough about to type for you

Brian

If you like Scottish musicals… I went to a show called Orphans which was an adaptation of a film from the 90s by Peter Mullan. The soundtrack is on Spotify (search for Orphans - National Theatre of Scotland). Bit different to Islanders but likely more representative of us!

Sydney

Anyone know if Adal has posted his full New Orleans recommendations list anywhere? Would love of a full episode of that if it doesn’t already exist 👀

AK ie JetBlackArsonal

My recommendation: The RWBY soundtrack. Even if you don’t watch the show, if you were a pop punk, alt rock fan of the early 2000s. It is a bop. It is a jam. It revives the nostalgic angst without the cringe.

AJ Carreau

Any way we could get links to some of these? Been trying to look them all up and getting a verity of different products not sure what the exact ones there talking about

Memo Gomora

Julia Jacklins cover of Someday by the Strokes. Goddamn it's so good

Memo Gomora

Cab Calloway and the old cartoon episodes he was in, where they used his movements to animate the characters. I just rediscovered it and got into some research about him

Memo Gomora

Ken burns' old PBS documentaries to settle down for bed. They used to put me to sleep in school and still do. Plus I actually find the subject matter interesting now but still sleepy vibes

Memo Gomora

A podcast called Shagged Married Annoyed. A very funny couple who shit on each other but with love

Emily Poirier

Book recommendations: The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir (a wild ride with such a strong voice). Most things by T.Kingfisher (fairytale and/or horror, another author with a super strong, charming voice). Videogames: Potion Permit (my favorite Stardew Valley-esque I've tried so far, really cute for when SDV seems Too Big to get into) Music: City and Colour (songs Northern Wind, Little Hell, Fucked it Up). Comedy: H Jon Benjamin's album Well, I Should Have... which is a jazz album where he plays piano despite not knowing how to play piano. The other musicians are competent musicians. I laugh every time I hear it. Self Care: glass nail files. They are infinitely superior to the like sandpaper ones. Activities: bird-watching (I just love those feathery guys). Crochet (I have been crocheting for four months and I'm about to make it my whole personality). (Doing my part to get Adal to 500 recommendations)

Adin A

Garth Marenghi’s book Terrortome. I am laughing or giggling hard every page

AK ie JetBlackArsonal

Erin specifically: you might have seen these two but the YouTube channels Never Too Small and Alexandra Gater. One is small places all over the world and the other is a Canadian interior designer

MrBoopDoop

I think Adel would like the show The Traitors on peacock! It's like if CBS' Big Brother was a murder mystery!

Mr. Martini

Kiwis. The fruit. And the bird. And the people. They are all wonderful.

Bartholomew Undercoff

I recommend Dropout.tv as a top streaming service. It's cheaper than most other streaming services and has so much hilarious content. I've subscribed to them for years and it's the only streaming service I haven't canceled. For podcasts I recommend Man Enough. It's a podcast that focuses on conversations around cultural change and how to undefine masculinity. It has amazing guests and thought provoking conversations. As for a book recommendation, I'd say give Flannery O'Connor a try. She's seen as the queen of southern gothic literature. Her short stories are full of dark humor and she had such an honest view of the world. "Good Country People" was my first introduction to her short stories. I recently found Nolan Taylor on Spotify. His song "68" has hit me hard and I recommend people give it a listen. He has a video of on YouTube: https://youtu.be/UKxTIuw1zEM

Bringer of Cookies

A milk frother is a game changer for making coffee at home

Bringer of Cookies

The book The Caliph's House: A Year in Casablanca is great

Jenna Smith

On topic of interior design, I recommend Sims 4 speed builds on YouTube. I don’t even play the game, but these are super relaxing to watch. As for some specific creators, look up the mossy sim and Gryphi.

Leo Melanson

I recommend the Linda Lindas. They are a very young group of girls who do punk rock SO WELL. Also, I recommend flossing.

Memo Gomora

"OH!" Is such a fuckin banger. I've only heard their top like, 5 songs but yeah they're good

Memo Gomora

Alexandra Savior. If you like Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys and Last Shadow Puppets, check her out. Such an amazing artist. Such a vibe

Memo Gomora

The band "Her's" Dreamy and fun indie pop music to swoon to. Gone too soon may they rest in peace

Sarah

If you only take one thing away from this episode, it should be Katamari Damacy. Truly the most fun and relaxing game ever.

P.N. Guin

The new Baby Metal Album (The Other One) is extremely good and I cannot recommend it enough. Adal talked about Greeky mythology I would recommend the Greeking Out podcast from Nat Geo Kids (my son LOVES it and they just started a new season). If you are into pro wrestling I recommend hunting down the work of Emi Sakura, Bandido, El Hijo del Vikingo, and watching the Up Up Down Down Youtube channel.

Melody Burgmann

I actually almost choked at JPC saying Rick MorAnus

Kieran Pilon

I gave some in a stream a few months back, but here are some more horror movies off the top of my head, for Adal or anyone else: PONTYPOOL!!!, Skinamarink, Spree, Krampus, Malignant, Creep

David Taylor

For bedding and clothing items you don't want to buy secondhand (underwear, for instance) I'm obsessed with bamboo viscose. Very sustainable but also breathes well, is wrinkle-resistant, and doesn't get grungy as fast as synthetics. I also love merino and alpaca wool for a lot of the same reasons, although they can be pricier.

David Taylor

My olive oil recommendation is California Olive Ranch. Not too expensive but the quality is fantastic. Fresher than a lot of the imported Italian oils because it doesn't have a whole ocean to cross and red tape to go through. The Reserve Collection especially would make for a great gift

Abbie Howell

Album recommendation: Fun Times by Josh Fudge. I have listened to nothing else since episode 246 of HRR came out.

B Elford

You guys might have seen this since I believe they started as a sketch group, but the 2005 TV show Stella is a must watch. My favorite show and my friends and I still quote pretty much every episode.

MaxMin

for those who like Pokemon and wants more friends, Pokemon Go is a great way. Try to find discord servers near you, there's usually an active group that meets every Wednesday for raid hour. Also those who grew up playing Toontown and misses it should download Toontown: Corporate Clash.

MaxMin

I watched Set! on Amazon prime and it's as good as Erin said. Great recommendation

Way Singleton

If you like loose leaf tea i recommend purchasing a french press. I never thought about how useful it is for tea because it's so well known for brewing coffee, but it has TRULY changed my tea-toting game. I bought a 12oz one which is perfect for a single cup of tea.

Sammy Webb

Got to recommend Vinland saga for Adal you like to watch tv and you like Greek stuff but it is an anime so…

Devyn McIlraith

1. Nerds on vanilla ice cream (or custard). 2. Making brownies in a waffle maker (the mini waffle makers work the best) 3. Putting little baskets where you place mail/keys so that it "becomes" organized

PrettyOddVices

I recommend buying an outdoor rocking chair. There is genuinely nothing I enjoy more than sitting outside on a beautiful day in a rocking chair

Madison Darcey

On the topic of jpc's recommendation for your local library, I have to strongly recommend the app called Libby. It's an app where you can connect your library card, and it takes most library cards in the world, and you can borrow ebooks and audiobooks for free in on loan from your library. They automatically send them back to the library at the end of the loan term, or you can give them back early. You can make a bunch of different lists (for To Read books and such). There's a huge selection of things, and if they don't have what you want at that moment, you can be put on a holds list and it will send to your device when your name on the waiting list is at the top, or you can actually recommend your library to get that book for you so you can read it. I have read probably 26 books already in 2023 just using the Libby app, and I've probably recommended a few books and all of them so far have been acquired, and now I can read those. ♡♡♡

Burke

The smiley face dish scrubbie thingies! Game changer!

Sean M Carrick

I know you're getting a ton of recs, but I'm hoping that you'll eventually see mine (I've recommended this multiple times already, in previous posts). PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, watch the movie Detention (2011, directed by Joseph Kahn)! It's a bonkers comedy that feels like every 90s teen movie smashed into a blender, and then played back at hyper speed. It's also got some of the funniest, most bizarre scenes I've ever seen. It's also so dense that I was still discovering jokes on the fifth watch. I will even buy you all a copy, if that's what it takes.

Dana Fah

-the show Our Flag Means Death!! its so funny and amazing and gay and I feel like many HRR fans will like it! plus it has Taika waititi and Rhys Darby :) -Matcha powder on vanilla icecream, soo good. -the podcast Margaret moves to Mars, very silly 6 ep comedy, u will like it if you've listened to A Winkle in Time! -electric heated mattress topper. its insanely nice to slip into your bed and feel super toasty.

Mr. Martini

Thanks! I’m a huge fan of Lao Gan Ma too

Bartholomew Undercoff

Skinamarink is one of few horror films I will never watch again. It hit me hard in a way I wasn't expecting and shook me to my core.

AJ

Pretty much stopped everything (including) the podcast) to go and listen to Islanders. Wow. Wow. Wow.

Daniel B.

I feel like I've recommended that to everyone I'm with that asks the question "Oh, I wonder where that is streaming" while we search for movies, and every time they refuse to use it after that initial attempt. The cycle begins anew.

Joni Gray

TV show rec: No one ever talks about this show (for obvious reasons, you're about to learn), but I love it and have watched it through at least 8 times! It's called "Threesome" from Comedy Central UK. The three leads have the best chemistry of any actors I've ever seen! It's not as dirty or sexy as the title makes it sound, it's really more about "growing up" as you turn 30. I see it's on Prime UK, but not sure where else it can be found, sorry. I'm still looking.

Jenna Mosillami

I cannot recommend enough O'Shaughnessy in Ravenswood enough. Irish pub run by a lovely irish woman and a fantastic Irish brunch on weekends. Also Cultivate by Forbidden Root has an amazing beer list that they rotate regularly! They have a huge cocktail/mocktail menu as well but i haven’t tried too much of that because the beer always calls my name.

Chrysanthemum

Gonna recommend the format of Audio Books. Libraries have digital audiobooks you can check out and return all from the comfort of your phone and listening to books is great

elliebean

Okay I don’t know what it is about that song but Kishi Bashi’s cover of ‘This must be the place’ has the power to really start a day right! If I feel off when I’m getting up that’s the song I always put on and it never fails to lift the mood and the day!

The Oakesfields

Cultivate is amazing. Their food is SO creatively interesting and delicious but still feels just like a chill weeknight dinner spot.

Ben!

The Wayfarer series— it starts with A Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. Reallllly cozy space travel universe. Becky Chambers’ world building is unmatched and if you have ever felt like sci fi is too harsh or unfeeling, you should read these guys

Roa Sante

Game recommendation - the Ace Attorney visual novel game series, Fire Emblem Awakening Book recommendation - “Holes” by Louis Sachar, “The Joy Luck Club” by Amy Tan, and anything written by Khaled Hosseini Show recommendation - As Told by Ginger, Oshi no Ko, Shadows House, The Mole Music Recommendation: EPIC the Musical, “Idol” by YOASOBI, “Mephisto” by QUEEN BEE Board game recommendation - Horrified and Horrified: American Monsters, Poetry for Neanderthals, Moose Master Web series recommendation - the Jet Lag: The Game on YouTube Life in general - taking breaks, drinking water, napping

Chris

The Outer Wilds is the best video game ever made and it’s not even close. I’m not kidding. Do not do an ounce of research before playing it. I play a lot of video games and some of them are good. I’ll tell my girlfriend “this is one of the best games ever made” and she’ll be like “what about Outer Wilds” and my response is always “that’s not a fair comparison.” It’s so good. I’ve been putting off the DLC because I need to savor every second. Truly this game is insanely well made, has one of the strongest premises I’ve ever seen, and trusts its player like few games do today to incredible benefits. I don’t recommend things because I don’t like most things. But I love this game.

AusTin

My hot rec may sound like it’s coming out of left field…but are you looking for a comfort show, something to binge on a Sunday afternoon? Try 911 or its spin-off 911: Lone Star. Believe me, watch one and you won’t help but watch a dozen. It’s gory but funny? Stupid but sincere? Aggressively progressive, with gay, lesbian, and trans characters all given full story arcs? Trust me, these shows go all out. They rule. Watch one or two when you need to decompress, they do the job.

Space Captain Omoly

Yakuza like a Dragon rules, one of y'all should play that. Also, watch Angels in America and Paprika.

Zochelle Glaspie

Recs from me Morganville vampire series Electrical tape, fixes everything duct tape can't Purse that you use exclusively to hold your slightly smaller purse

Colin H.

TV show rec: Danger 5 Video Game Rec: Grounded Places (in no particular area): Alamere Falls, Pacific Cocktail Haven, Hopleaf, Anza Borrega, Hoh Rainforest The only children's book you need: The Stinky Cheeseman

Josh Davis

Consider: A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky Chambers

Elizabeth Teeter

Flea Market Flip is fun if you like DIY projects.

Chelsie

Recommend The Prodigal Son tv show, Good Omens (the book and the tv show), the Bartimaeus Trilogy books, and the Mercy Thompson books.

Beau

Another recommendation on top of Adel’s is This Must Be the Place by Sure Sure. It’s even better than the original in my opinion!

Amanda

I pay 8$ a month specifically to hear you talk Erin

Jennifer Grote

Does this game have a Zen mode? Because time limits never feel relaxing to me

Sarah

Once you beat the game, there are “Infinite” modes without a time limit and you can just roll 😊

Valerie Sherrick

My favorite audiobook so far is Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. So well acted. I read the book years ago, now revisiting as an audiobook. It's even better in this medium! Perfect "read" for science nerds

Valerie Sherrick

It's like cozy sci fi with big themes of acceptance and love and philosophy. One of my fave books for sure!

Valerie Sherrick

Relationship rec: Before bed most nights I thank my partner for something that he did that day. Doing the dishes or taking out the trash, or something bigger like driving me to therapy. Something I genuinely was grateful for. At first he would just smile and say you are welcome. But eventually he started thanking ME for things and sometimes even initiating it. Even if his response was "Thank YOU for being cute", it felt amazing to hear. He is acts of services and I am words of affirmation, so this has been such a great exchange that naturally became part of our relationship. ❤️👏😘

Valerie Sherrick

Switch game: Donut County. Very light puzzles, so funny and warm. Cozy and doesn't require much thought. About 3 hour gameplay, I love trading the controller back and forth with a friend and playing through it in an afternoon. A raccoon and his human friend live in an animal city modelled after LA. You play an app and see how that affects the town. Playful distruction ensues

Valerie Sherrick

If you grew up watching Spirited Away, the new Live Action play is showing in select US theaters. It was performed in Tokyo and is one of the best stage performances I have ever seen. I think it is coming to streaming services in November 2023. Beautiful sets, acting, and omg the puppetry. The amount of talent it took to put a Studio Ghibli animated movie to a 3 hour play is unrivaled. Yes, this version still made me cry.

Oscar

I second Creep, and I think Creep 2 is just as good. 😊

Andy Fillmore

Seconded. I would also reiterate that you should go in blind. The DLC is pretty fantastic too.

Cory!

I recommend the Discworld books by Terry Prathett. I don't suggest starting with the first couple of books. Mort or Guards! Guards! are excellent starting points, though my first book was Small Gods and that really drew me in. Snuffle balls are a great toy for dogs who like puzzles, but also don't destroy their toys too quickly. Search for it on Amazon. My little dog loves it.

Jeffrey Mery

Adal, my life forever changed when you recommended Zapp's voodoo pretzel stix!

Lily Sage

The best best best

Henry

Book rec: Anne of Green Gables. It is, quite frankly, delightful. It really captures the feeling of childhood, and depicts the life of an optimistic, imaginative orphan moving in with two elderly sibling farmers. I listened to an audio book of it, and that helped bring out the childish rambling to its benefit.

Cathy Wood

Just a lil thanks for the library shoutout it's uh not great out here. Not a product, but recommend setting a 30 minute timer and tackling a cleanup project you've been neglecting. I did a big cleanup around my desk at home and now I feel better when I look at it.

(Pirate King) Darrin

I use those fly sticky things at work and home They are seriously incredible??

Pop Pastel

I recommend hitting a piñata as an adult 😏

Cyberhippo

A Winkle in Time might be my favorite typo ever - sounds like a Wrinkle in Time for toddlers 🤓

Dean Scream 717

Adal, I'm sorry, but it is absolutely not a rule in any public library that you can't be in the children's section without a child. For all she knew you were just picking up books for your kid. I think maybe that Karen was just profiling you.
