From Adal:

Fun month full of travel and celebrations. We went with my mom, sister and brother-in-law to Door County over Mother’s Day weekend. Splendid place with lots of fish boils and a pretty solid putt-putt place called Pirates Cove (I got 3 hole in 1’s but lets not make a big deal out of it…)

Over Memorial Day weekend I went with Jemma to Princeton Reunions and had more Hoagie Haven, which I’m ready to declare as a top 3 all-time sandwich, and was introduced to a new game called 2 ball (basically involves sprinting around a pool table). After watching one round I jumped in to play and IMMEDIATELY annihilated my knee on the table and have now spent the last week hobbling around. Don’t play 2 ball.

I just got back (apologies for the newsletter delay) from my birthday trip to Lisbon where I crept closer to death by tallying up 41 years. We had a great time with highlights including steak sandwiches for dessert, pastiche de nada’s, out of this world garlic shrimp (and seafood in general), a magical day trip to Sintra and an immersive show about Edgar Allan Poe we ended up going to 3 times called A Morte do Corvo. If you ever want a list of recommendations please reach out and I’m happy to share.

Here’s what I consumed in May:

TV:

I Think You Should Leave season 3

Detroiters season 1

Review season 1 - easily the most underrated tv show of all time. It’s on Paramount + if you’ve never seen it

Queer Eye season 7

The Other Two season 3

Schmigadoon! season 2

Rise of the Pink Ladies

RuPaul AllStars season 8

The Muppets Mayhem

The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning

The Big Door Prize

Movies:

Gone Fishing - a funny, sad and weird short film I really enjoyed. Written, directed and featuring some of our buds from Big Grande and starring the best Big Toe, Mary Holland. Please check it out! https://vimeo.com/761279804

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves

Fast X in 4DX - went with JPC and Casey Toney and we got our asses absolutely scrambled by the machine that is 4DX.

Miracle - had never seen it and figured it was time

Blade Runner - same as above

Blade Runner 2049

Guardians of the Galaxy 3

Air

Woooooo! Becoming Ric Flair

Rory Scovel Tries Stand-Up For the First Time

American Masters: Mel Brooks: Make a Noise

Jinkx Monsoon: Red Head Redemption

Other Stuffs:

Music I’ve been listening to: AJJ’s album ‘Good Luck Everybody’, The Fat Rat album PARALLAX and The National’s new album ‘First Two Pages of Frankenstein’

The podcast Mallwalkin’ with Mark McConville and Matt Gourley.

Played some more Blood on the Clocktower, this time with Arnie and as he mentioned we had one brutal game where we were sussed out immediately!

Got the Peanut Butter Puppy Chow blizzard at Dairy Queen and it’s very much worth checking out.

Since I was out of town I haven’t been able to see it but I’m unbelievably excited to see Across The Spider-Verse! This might be the most I’ve ever anticipated seeing a film.

Got to see Caroline Polchik and Ethel Cain in concert which was a treat

In searching out more immersive theater to experience I stumbled across a theatrical immersive horror piece done over the phone called CLAWS. It’s a dark and engaging roller coaster ride and I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a unique experience! https://candlehousecollective.com/tickets/claws

On June 2nd our Brisket (aka Bongo, aka Bicky, aka Bissy Beans) celebrated his birthday!

Thank you to everyone who sent us recent packages! My cats are LOVING the little cow toy someone sent and I’ve been enjoying the hot sauce, coffee and everything else!

Please let me know what you’ve been enjoying!

From JPC:

Hey Riddiots -

Planning a trip to the Northeast so if anyone in Portland, Portsmouth, Boston, Providence, or New Haven has some favorite spots that they'd recommend, please let me know in the comments!

Here's some things that I've been enjoying lately:

1. The Other Two on Max - so far, season 3 has been great but the first two seasons are also killer, so if you haven't watched, you absolutely should

2. Platonic on AppleTV - Yes, the show features THE Janet Varney and she's very good in it. It's also just very funny! Mild spoiler for the first scene of the first episode, but as I was watching it I said "fuck this guy" when Rose Byrne's character's husband started talking because he's super handsome and also really kind? Shows shouldn't do that. Hot characters should be horrible so we can all hate them.

3. W.E.B Du Bois biography of John Brown - fascinating read and not super long (although it takes you a long time to read it when you're reading four books at a time.) This is the first biography of John Brown that I've read and I love it. If anyone has read another that they'd recommend, please let me know. Or any other Du Bois! God, that guy is also such a singular historical figure. Oh, and if anyone has read the David Levering Lewis 2 part biography of Du Bois, please let me know if you'd recommend it.

4. Succession on Max - Had a great time watching this show and rooting against all the main characters. And it's one of those rare shows that has multiple stand-out acting moments per episode, especially in this final season. Disgusting Brothers forever!

Just signed up for Claws. I'm really looking forward to it. Thanks for the recommendation!

You gotta check out Plant City in Providence. It's a vegan food market with some great restaurants (I love the burgers at New Burger). They also have a cool speakeasy nearby (with a good mocktail selection iirc). Also if you're there during WaterFire check that out, it's a fun time

Rec for JPC as a Rhode Island native: if you’re in Providence and have the time, check out Red Ink Community Library. It’s a real tiny lefty library/community space run by a couple buddies of mine from when I was organizing down there. Very small and quaint but a nice place to check out if you’re in the area! Also White Electric is a coffee shop downtown that just recently turned into a collectively owned worker co-op. Good food and drinks too ☕️ Last rec as a now-Bostonian: if you’re looking for food in Boston, there’s a ramen place in Brookline called Ganko Ittetsu and it’s the best ramen I’ve ever had (and they’ve got veggie options) 🍜 I’ll end the list there, have a great trip!!

Vinnie Vidi Vici

Portland is wonderful, many food/restaurant thoughts from me. Granted many of my recs don't jive with JPC's pallette. But, highlights regardless are: Duckfat, Honey Paw, Central Provisions, Holy Donut, Sinful Kitchen. Also, Urban Farm Fermentory is a unique space.

Gyre

Glad you enjoyed Lisbon, Adal, even if you typoed pastéis de nata! Next time I visit my relatives there I'll definitely look up A Morte do Corvo.

Kiera Conrad

Just saw Across the Spiderverse yesterday and it slaps so hard. Art is if anything even more incredible than the first film, it’s just gorgeous to watch and tons of fun plus also being heartfelt. Also, JPC, thanks for the W.E.B. DuBois rec! I didn’t know he did a John Brown biography and will have to check it out.

Mateo Paradis

AJJ! Another reason to love Adal ❤️

AusTin

Gotta get to Across the Spider-Verse ASAP, it’s maybe the most gorgeous movie of any type I’ve ever seen. The animation is so far beyond what any other major studio is putting out.

AusTin

Also, is Poe big in Portugal? ‘Cause I know he’s always been pretty popular in France. Just curious because it seems like European countries are selective/random about the American authors they latch onto.

Casey Carbone

Maybe I didn't hear correctly, but is your last live show (the one where Adal missed due to the sickness we shall not mention) also available? I thought I heard on a recent episode it was available but couldn't find it.

Kyle Barnes

Adal I am very excited for you to see Across the Spiderverse. Hopefully we can hear what you thought on the next chatterbox

Sarah

Adal, Review is truly so underrated, it’s one of my comfort shows. Top tier recommendation! JPC, while in New Haven you MUST try the famous New Haven style apizza, either at Frank Pepe’s or Sally’s Apizza. Very different from Chicago style pizza, but the best pizzas in the country IMO. Also take a walk around the Yale campus downtown, it’s gorgeous!

Hayley R

If by Northeast Portland you mean Portland ME I have plenty to recommend! Actually around 20-30 minutes south of Portland there are beautiful beaches in the town of Old Orchard Beach or Biddeford Pool. I enjoy looking for seaglass at Fortune Rocks Beach! At least for now the coast air isn’t toxic like much of the north east so try out Maine!

Hayley R

Oh and I second the holy donut. They have vegan/ gluten free options too if you have dietary restrictions.

Hey Riddle Riddle

he's not necessarily big there but Portugal's most famous (?) poet Fernando Possoa, translated The Raven into Portuguese. The show is about a rivalry between the two poets and Possoa's descent.

omf

Blood on the Clocktower is such a great game. I’ve recently become obsessed with it and had to buy it.

Jenna Mosillami

I may be biased but Rhode Island is one of my fave states and it’s an easy ride from Boston!

Courtney Price

Since JPC is a Known Pervert I gotta recommend my favorite Providence sex shop - Mister Sister! Just about a block from there is Small Format, a great cafe with vegan baked goods. Like No Udder has amazing vegan ice cream, also nearby (providence is small). Lastly, Lovecraft Arts and Sciences book store is definitely worth a visit especially if you’re interested in horror and/or the occult.

Bagel Minister

Veggie Galaxy in cambridge has the best vegan/vegetarian breakfast food ive ever had, if you’re driving and interested Erin’s favorite bagel shop is on the way between providence and boston Atlantic Bagel and you can check out Hingham which is a genuinely beautiful town. Jaho is a boba place in Boston area that has the best Thai iced tea ever

Riddy Kitties Probate Lawyer

Adal I think you might enjoy playing Doom Eternal on PS5! It’s free currently with PS Extra

Eloise Fox

I second all of these recommendations!!!
