I used to watch Dirty Jobs with my parents. Had no idea about his politics. How disappointing.

“The best cereal for a grandpa to eat is bran flakes with fresh fruit” Me who is literally eating that for breakfast as I listen 😬

I don't really get what Erin meant about not doing satire. Isn't that what a lot of improv comedy is about? Can someone explain it to me, maybe I'm not understanding satire as she meant it 🤔

Heidi Nehls

You would feel differently about honeydew if you had one from Dixon, Montana. So fucking good. All their melons are the best I ever had. PLUS, the delightful phrase, “Come on and get your Dixon Melons!” 😜😈

Kate

My take on what they meant: People who do poorly formed satire just wind up acting out the thing they think is bad, maybe heightening it a bit. It’s like the movies where they are doing a halfassed job of criticizing racism by just having a character be racist, and leaning on the assumption that the audience knows racism is bad and knows the authors are good, therefore they know the racism isn’t “real,” it’s actually “satire.” When people do this, they wind up just making media that is enjoyable for the exact people they are trying to criticize, which is what Erin (?) meant when she mentioned blood laughs. Satire is possible, but it’s something that usually needs editing and consideration to make sure it’s really working, especially when you’re just starting out. That need for finesse plus the fact that any worthwhile satire angles at sensitive topics means that it would be an absolute minefield for a green improv team.

Sue

Ah, gotcha! I know exactly what you mean, I've seen the exact thing you're talking about and the thought has crossed my mind "why do you have such specific references on how these people act?" So I totally get it. Thanks so much for replying and explaining. Much appreciated.

Autumnis_Prime

i understood what she meant during the episode, but just wanted to thank you for writing this response so clearly and thoughtfully!

Okay someone HAS to write a movie about two time travellers who meet and fall in love while both trying desperately to blend into their surroundings, and even THEY don’t know the other is a time traveller.

riss

Please get Heather Anne Campbell on the show!!!
