Well, even though I've been able to update the progress bar every Wednesday over the past period, it's been a little while since the last write up, so let's do some numbers again.

Keep in mind that the number below are rough, and the conclusions you can make from them come with a wide margin of error.

Let's do the images.

Right now there's 6101 individual .png image files in LomL, and 3800 .webp files. Since I've last converted .png files into .webp releasing chapter 4, that means 2301 images added.Note: images don't translate one-on-one into renders, as I cut up renders into bits in order to do the little animation stuff. I'm taking a wild and baseless guess the ratio is about 1.5 images for every 1 render.

So what conclusion can we draw from this? Well, at this moment, chapter 5 has 2.4x the average for the previous chapter in images added, and we're not even there yet.

Yay, that means it's 2.4 times better, because everyone knows the quality of a VN is measured by the number of images! Nah, I'm just kidding, it's not. But it's a nice indication of effort; creating up the visuals are the greatest time sink by far for me.

Mind you, that's creating the visual scenes that take up my time, not rendering: rendering time is irrelevant as that happens while I'm working editing, writing and coding.

So that means it's already 2.4 times as long as the previous chapter?

Ah... no. This chapter requires me to create almost all visuals from scratch as we're not spending much time (if any) at our usual haunts. I'm guessing it'll be similar in size to the last installment, but I've not measured it in any way.

Let's do development time!

Let's compare that to development times: the final version of the last chapter came out May 20th, so let's peg it at 5.5 months now? The chapter before that came out just before Christmas, so lets say 5 months development time for chapter 3 to completion? So from a graphics/images point of view, chapter 5 development isn't lagging/slowing down in comparison to the previous chapters, it's picking up.

But are we there yet?

Now, let's look at overall progression. From the progress bar, we've got 41 portraits filled in, 5 partials, and 6 remaining. Let's count the partials as 50%: that leaves 41+2.5 finished, 6+2.5 remaining, so that's 83% of the way there (rounding down).

That's about as far as I'm willing to go at this point though. Given the numbers above, and the fact that history shows an additional two weeks or so of proofing and QA, I'll let you draw your own conclusions; I'm not willing to commit to any dates until I'm sure this beast has thrown all it had at me.

Why this little breakdown?

Well, I'm not gonna lie. Being a lone dev on a huge project, it can be taxing, especially when people come round yelling at you, and I found myself at the brink of having a tiny emotional breakdown myself. I wanted to have a quick and dirty verification to check if I'm not lagging or faltering, and I'm happy I can conclude that if anything, I'm actually picking up speed.

As always, I'm super grateful for your love and support, and dedicated to get the next installment of LomL in your hands as fast as is humanly possible.

Hey man, we would like you to take your time, do what you gotta do 👍

Cody Kodak

Can't rush art. Take all the time you need. I know it's gonna be awesome once its done.

Naughty Road

Cheers, it's really good to know you have my back.

Jpshum

I don't really comment often, but I have to say that I genuinely love the story in this! I will tell you what I tell most others. I am willing to wait for quality, As long as it takes. I hope you are taking care of yourself though. I know there is a big portion of us quietly supporting you. Keep up the amazing work.

Nino

I am sure I speak for many when I say "Do it your way". Love your work, the attention to detail and the writing makes this project highly anticipated but this work shouldn't be rushed. Do what you do best, whilst also taking care of your own needs. Stay happy and healthy.

SYH

If the yelling is that bad, perhaps AAAAAH! should be screening your messages.

Bogdan

Take your time man, you are only human. In an utopian world there would be no haters, but look at it as a sign that you are successful, that's why you attract them too. Take care of yourself first, we are supporting you and your good work.

Mr JC

We got your back dev. Just keep doing what you're doing.

darlic

I don't want to play the devil's advocate here, but if people are complaining this only means they care about this project. Since, as you said, you feel you're within the time limits, don't feel upset about those people. If anything, you could use all the "false negativity" as a motivational boost. It's not that easy to achieve such a mindset but if you manage this will be of great benefit to you. Keep up the great work! :)

Naughty Road

Cheers for the kind words. and I don't mind people telling me to hurry cause they can't wait, that's motivational. But lately, the yelling comes with a lot of lazy assumptions, plain falsehoods and personal attacks on my work ethic and moral fiber. There's nothing positive coming from those vibes, sadly.

Atixes

Some people never gonna want to understand it. It often just comes from a dumb herd mentality. It's easy to gossip about stuff, but it needs some level of effort to empathize with someone else's position. With that I don't mean cut all the communication, but don't waste your energy when it gets really taxing. Like darlic before me said 'this only means they care about this project', yes that might be true to an extent, but there will always be otherwize nice people who just love drama too much and don't want to think (because they might not like the result). Try not to let that get to you personally.

Jeff Sandau

People are seriously getting on you for taking a while? Do they not realize that such good quality takes time? With how AMAZING LoML is, from the story to the renders and animations, I think you're doing a damn fine job getting us content as you're a solo developer. Keep up the good work, NRP, those of us that are not asshats fucking love you. I know I do. LomL is on my top 5 favorite VN's of all time, and that's out of hundreds of others I've played. Don't get down on yourself and fuck those haters. You rock!

Aqua Man

Best game around - quality over quantity all day long

heimdall74

no matter how much time passes, the priority is your health and given the current situation, you need to be even more health conscious, your game is excellent, your job is fantastic, but the most important is you so take care of yourself

Alleyway

I ain't goin' anywhere, man. Just gimme the brownies when they finish baking. You're the best chef in this city, motherfucker, ain't you heard?

jpostel

we love your work. Thanks for sharing

Naughty Road

Cheers all, thanks for your kind words. I means a lot to me to realize you're as passionate about this game as I am and want the best for it.

Troz

Yes - it's frustrating when updates for a game as good as this are a long time coming. But one of the reasons that it is a good game is the care that goes into its creation. So keep up the good work and only release when you are ready. Edit: and another thought that just occurred to me. One of the frustrations for me with infrequently-updated games is that I can't remember what is going on when I start a new chapter. That isn't a problem with LOML - I guess because the story and the characters are so memorable.

Reisky

Take your time. We know the result will be great ! And don't worry about the negativity stuff. At least you keep updating us and giving us informations about your progress frequently, with your progression bar, and your written updates like this one. It's not like some others who don't give any updates / informations for months sometimes... The most important thing is to keep us informed, so we know we're right to keep supporting you, and you do it pretty well so I personnally won't complain. Thanks for what you do Naughty, we love your work

HBI

I really enjoy the Aragones-style doodling on the graphical updates you put on Discord. Way more entertaining than a wall of text.

Endless.Ocean

Take your time, don't listen to the noise. We support this game because of how good it is, quality like that takes time and effort.

Robert

Keep it up man. Love your art and how everybody isn't a supermodel with almost the same figure.

TheKid

Take it slow, mate.

Jamie Marinoff

I'm happy you're taking your time, quality over quantity!

hello

Is there any way that we can help with rendering?

Naughty Road

Cheers, but rendering isn't the bottleneck, it happens in parallel, while I'm doing other stuff. Setting up the images (posing, lighting, etc) is by far the greatest, and there's no way to offload that, nor is the writing and editing images and adding transforms before inserting them into the dialog, which is the second biggest timesink.
