While overall reception of chapter 5 was pretty good, there's been some complaints about certain sections being much too dark.

In order to do better next time, I'd like to get some figures and see if it is specific to certain form factors. If you could help me by filling out this poll I'd be very grateful.

Please indicate if you found certain sections in chapter 5 (specifically, the night-time in the living area, sleeping area, and campfire) much too dark or if you thought it was OK, and indicate what kind of display you used.

I don't want to disappoint or contradict users who had a problem with the light levels, I personally just didn't experience any.

Zachte Zoete

It was darkish at some points but that very much fit the scenes. So No complaints.

Jim Aladdin

It wasn't so dark that it ruined the scene, but maybe add some candles next time

Old Salt

I have a 27” screen, and it was dark, but I could make everything out. Maybe just up the light level 10% That way you can keep the mood of the scene. 😉

Rich Spencer

I thought the whole thing was beautiful, sexy and emotional, some of your best work. But I have to agree that although the dark scenes looked realistic considering the lighting, it was too dark to any details and took away from the scenes as a whole. Would it be an idea to just redo the renders in the living room scenes where they're standing with some ambient candle lighting from the front or something? I had to put my phone on full brightness just to see anything, which made the text way too bright and therefore even more distracting. Also it's just a small point, but it sometimes takes away from the scene when the sisters are facing you but talking to each other. I get that's the trope of the genre, but it just makes you feel like it's less real that way.

The sleeping/cleanup scenes were far too dark for me. I tried on multiple large monitors as well. I found myself screenshotting a couple of them and lightening them in photoshop to better see what was happening.

Michael

I was more delighted by the darkness as it set the mood really well. On the other hand I consider myself lucky to have a large screen with a really good resolution regarding all light levels -.- It might help to consider raising local brightness a tad or lowering contrast - just assuming not everybody has a „I have to set up my screen properly calibrated“ OCD like me ;)

Naughty Road

Cheers, but I don't think that'll do much good as I've been watching those very same scenes on my monitors without much issue, and no doubt your screenshot will look fine to me too. I'm stumped as to why user experiences differ so much, with one group of people quite adamant its perfectly fine and it must be user experience, while another group (a minority, but much, much too large to be dismissed as a fluke) is equally adamant it's bad.

Sebastian Prall

Anyone who had a problem should download a free program called Calibrize. It will fix scenes that are too dark in a lot of games.

Sebastian Prall

Poor monitor calibration. And displays with poor contrast/ black levels.

Bofhorg

Hardware might be to blame. My old (rather cheap) monitor did have contrast issues when displaying dark scenes. I recently upgraded to a more decent monitor, and all my contrast issues disappeared. Honestly, I wouldn't change the darkness. It feels very realistic this way.

Happyninja42

Honestly the darkness in the night scenes in Chapter 5 were perfect for me. It actually felt like realistic night lighting in a bedroom, after your eyes have adjusted, and it's just the ambient stuff. It made it all WAY more intimate and hot.

Old Salt

Yeah... that’s me... OCD with my screen settings. LOL

Nino

No issues for me, I could view the entire chapter perfectly. I do have a very good monitor so that may be a factor. From my experience I don't see what people are complaining about.

John K Baker

I have a big (17") laptop, but I use a HDMI cord to cast it to my 30" TV - if it's too dark (which it wasn't), I just crank up the contrast on the TV.

Flover

I'm sorry, I can't agree with you on that. And I'm not being polite about it, I just had no problems with any of the "darker" scenes whatsoever.

Flover

Yes, totally agree with that.

Trdx

Speak for yourself, please. I have of course noticed that some scenes are dark, but I didn't see it as problematic, they are supposed to be dark. Then again, I'm a guy who wants to have dark environment in computer games, if the environment is supposed to be dark. I don't like the options that artificially lighten the dark areas.

Troz

Interior night scenes were a bit too dark for me, on a 27" 1080p monitor calibrated for Photoshop use using a "Color Spyder" hardware calibration device.

passinthru

A little too dark in the night scenes. Not impossibly dark but a hair more brightness would have been nice. It is harder to see the models at night and they are kind of why we are there in the first place.

Jeff Sandau

I didn't have any issues. You handled dark scenes better than many other VN's, so i'm not complaining. If I can see, I'm good. Dark scenes are supposed to be dark. Doesn't make much sense if someone's sitting in the dark yet you can see everything.

T.M. Watson

I had to do use this method to see the dark scenes. I'm glad some of you were fine, but if it is too dark for 1 of 5 users, it's a widespread problem. This isn't the typical capitalist business model and more than likely won't turn fans away, but could cost you a few patrons. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being darkest, I would say these screens were about an 8. If there is an easy fix i would suggest you do, otherwise they're ok in a well lit room, i think.

T.M. Watson

I don't agree with this statement. Look to MILFy City as an example where even dark scenes are very clear. You also have to take in to account that these girls in LoML are ethnic and have lower contrast in a dark room. This is a game, not real life.

Michael

Now that you write it, I remember a colleague in school who was even night-blind, so I had to bring him to the bus station in the evening while I could still see fine... I totally agree to make it a tad brighter so everyone can see properly - still if there's a chance to set up your screen properly people should do that. Renpy sadly doesn't deliver a gamma setting feature, right?

Panchonki

It could have been a smidge brighter, but I don't feel anything was lost in the current state.

Jeff Sandau

You don't agree with "what" statement? Mine? Someone else's? Also, pretty sure most of us want this VN based in reality. We're not cats and neither are the players in the VN. We shouldn't be able to see in darkness. Milfy City did a good job, but I still think it was too bright. Yeah, we wanna' see the goods - I'm not arguing that point - but a dark room isn't going to be as bright as if there were a thousand tiny lamps around the room lighting it enough to see everything perfectly; that's not reality. This is my opinion, though, and I am in no way trying to be a dick or anything by stating it. I guess the TL;DR is, I don't agree with your statement. lol

Ross

There were some scenes darker than I would have liked, but nothing that was a game-breaker.
