Right now, I'm getting a ton of questions fired my way about the impending release, and I imagine there's a lot of hand wringing and hopping from one foot to the other, and I find I'm writing a lot of similar answers, so I'm gonna try a little experiment.

I'm going to put up a little list of stuff that needs doing. It'll be spoiler free, as is, and not open for debate. It is not inclusive, and items may appear on or disappear from it on a whim, and it will be updated whenever I remember about it. It is not a countdown checklist.

Let's see how this goes. My hope for it is that it's informative. If it stirs up a lot of anxiety or raises more questions than it answers, I'll take it down again.

Beta's done, lets release this thing.

Stuff that needs doing (update 16):To do

Release notes

Making builds

Sanity checking the builds

Getting mirrors up, getting links ready

Update to Itch.io on release day

Will do in a service release

Investigate option for an unsupported "Android hi-quality pack". nice to have, M.

Spoilerfree task description 7, S, nice to have

Spoilerfree task description 8, S, should have

Investigate Android compatibility issues on some devices. Seems unrelated to model, make, architecture, age, or resources. Some setting or other app?

Done

Fix beta feedback, must have

Final acknowledgements and call to action, must have; S

gallery overhaul: now we're save based, let's get all that hardcoded stuff sorted: make a list based menu with generic code instead of all these hardcoded menus within menus.

Missing dialog for M+D Lockout Paths (~4 scenes, no new image ); must have, M

Missing image variants and dialog for M+D Lockout Paths (2 scenes); in progress, all missing images have now been produced. must have, L

Spoilerfree task description 11, M, should have

Spoilerfree task description 2

Build for Android, plus sanity check it runs. Must have for beta. Ren'py seems to be generating builds alright, and they install, but don't load. Need to hook up logcat to find out what exactly is crashing.

Actually making final distribution builds, and uploading them to mirrors. Must have for beta.

Setting up discord roles for beta participants, and creating some channels. Must have for beta.

Release notes, known issues list, bug report instructions. Must have for beta.

Kick this thing out the door (red. thing=beta).

Happy flow testrun of chapter7 using the distribution build. Must have for beta.

Spoilerfree task description 10: Must have for beta. XS

Evaluation screen; must have for beta; M

Spoilerfree task description 11: Must have for beta. XS

Test/revision passes (most paths) for continuity , spelling and grammar, flow and pacing, scripting specials; must have for beta; L. Nearly all scenes completed (see infographic). In these final passes, I'm making sure to hit every path through a scene, in all its variations and modifiers for choices, preferences, relationship statuses, etc.

Test creating builds for pc/mac/linux distributions. Creating builds doesn't crash, which is something.

Set up new Gradle version in ren'py (which was a breeze with the new ren'py), next up, do a test build to see if there's errors.

Android build image compression, must have for beta; M/L. Interesting result from the test passes: it seems that I might not have to go as hard on compression as I thought I would. Will know for sure when the android version is actually built.

The bofhorg file (big dump of previous chapter fixes), M

Spoilerfree task description 9, S, nice to have

Spoilerfree task description 3, S,

Spoilerfree task description 4, S,

Convert pngs to webp; M/L. The new version will end up being just shy of 8 GB in size.

Spoilerfree task description 6, S

Spoilerfree task description 5, S

One full playthrough for happy path done. Obviously, I fixed a whole bunch of stuff as I went so it was anything but a speed run, but the time it took to play through all content still took me by surprise.

Several more scenes had dialog revisions and some bigger re-writes.

Beta warning notice added, updated version number, updated outdated mod warning system.

Spoilerfree task description 1.

Also, using Frame inside Composite images behaves differently following the ren'py upgrade. Tested remaining instances and they seemed to hold up, so moving on.

Refactored displayables using string interpolation, and settled for a combo of recutting some images, and biting the bullet on some exponential multiplication of image declarations, so transitions look half decent again for these images without generating a few MBs worth or boilerplate script to multiplex all possible combos out. Gonna have a long hard look at generating images from code at some point, or stay away from this type of setup for an image.

New gallery system pans out, and is now based on saves so dialog is present. You need to play through a scene to trigger it though, so no more unlocking without playthrough. Old version is still in there for those not starting a new playthrough of previous content.

Upgraded to ren'py 7.6.1 fixes memory errors and random crashes that started occurring lately. On the down side, that's the end of 32 bit support.

Tiny but annoying side effect of the upgrade. After a load, when you roll back to before the point you saved at, ren'py messes up the zoom/pan, so the parallax effect is broken. Until they fix that, I had to disable rolling back beyond the point you saved at when you load a savegame.

Enjoyed the update, however...I'm old and have no idea what the "M," "L," "D," and "S" indicate

Naughty Road

T-shirt sizes, as a rough indication of effort. Did I put in D somewhere, that's not right. :D

John K Baker

The I'm real glad I didn't see any "XXXXL!!!"

BigTop

Thanks for the update!

I think the "D" came from "M+D Lockout Paths".

"Downside of upgrading: we'd lose 32 bit compatibility" Oooph. I don't think I'll be able to play the next version then. We'll see though, I've got a weird setup... it's a 32 bit cpu running 64bit Win7, so I have odd issues with new programs some times.

Naughty Road

That's a peculiar setup. Still, if it runs 64bit Windows, it should be able to run a 64 bit app, right? Did you experience issues with other recent releases ren'py based VNs recently? My bet is, a fair share of those will have been on a ren'py version higher than 7.3.5 (which is the one LomL's on), and if they work, LomL will probably too.

Marcus

"That's a peculiar setup." Indeed, it's because I had to downgrade when my much better motherboard died about/just over a decade ago. I'd upgraded when this one's gpu died a few years earlier, but I tend to just stack old computers in the closet unless they actually caught fire or something (which the new one did during a lightning strike) so I still had it setup (everything but HDs and gpu). I took the HDs out of the smoking wreck and just put them back into the old system on the off chance it would run despite having upgraded to Win7 64bit (I really didn't want to dig out WinXP* or 98 and do a reinstall and I couldn't afford a new compy). I was surprised it ran, and I've just never bothered (or could afford) to upgrade since. However as newer Renpys do not run on this old potatoe... well, between this and Cyberpunk 2077, I guess it's time to start scraping together upgrade funds. .* Yes, I was using WinXp all the way up till about 2012ish, right when microsoft declared they'd no longer be selling Win7. I bought the last OEM copy from Tiger Direct on the last day they were legally allowed to sell it. Suffice to say I'm a late adopter with tech... I hate change and microsoft can pry Win7 from my eventual cold dead hands. Heh, if I had the money I'd put together old machines just to play old games on them the way they were intended. Le sigh.

TheKid

I see

TheKid

It's getting there!

A & W

your probably getting alot of questions because you dont give any real answers as far as a time frame for release goes and you always give the same excuse and no disrespect intended but its getting old alot of us have been patreons for along time and honestly we deserve a solid release date soon

Wirefull

And what will you do with a release date, exactly ? Wait more patiently ? A release date will not magically accelerate the development phase... The guy provides more insights about what's going on than usual game developers. But that's never enough ...

A & W

its alot easier to wait when you know when what your waiting for arrives

Naughty Road

You "deserve" a release date, like I have one in my backpocket right now, but I'm holding out on you? Jeepers, but the entitlement. Dude, you don't understand that I don't actually know how much work I still have left and therefore don't know when it will release? And you also don't understand that if I do just blurt something out, and Murphy's hits, as it has every single time, and I miss that date, everyone, but everyone, will be bombarding the comments yelling at me at the top of their lungs? Tbh, over the past few months, your comments have been nothing but low key annoyance and eyerolling, and it's starting to wear really thin.

A & W

honestly dude you may be right....thats my bad, ill admit when im wrong. meant no disrespect, i apologize and ill back off and just be patient you honestly made the best avn ive come across keep it up, and please pardon my assholness.

Feárless Sôldier

Imagine the heat Naughty would get after all this time and this chapter is not the masterpiece. And that my friend is what you are waiting for. "The Masterpiece".

Wirefull

I was wondering while checking the list, some items are quite technical, not much related to the content itself. I assume you're "alone" in this gig. Ever thought of hiring some tech guys to work on "background" tech tasks while you're focusing on the content itself ? Not meaning you're not a techie yourself, but for the menial tasks, I would assume it may be off-loadable as not related to the core spirit of the story ?

Naughty Road

Good question. If it was an awful lot of work, then yeah. But looking at the total project, I wonder if I actually spend even 1% of my time on issues like that. So in that light, it's actually not all that common and getting someone on board for that is overkill.

Wirefull

Indeed, you'd lose more time explaining the architecture logic behind the game than fixing it yourself.

TheKid

It's evolving before my eyes

Troz

I'm just replaying the most recent chapter so it will be fresh in my mind for the new release. Have been experiencing a few crashes and errors on my i7-6700/16GB Win10 laptop, so news of the ren'py upgrade is very welcome.

Deckard81

No "must haves" remain, does this bode well for a soon™ beta release?

Michael

If I had to guess a new years release date. 😆

Naughty Road

Yeah. There's some must have stuff in progress, and some of those are biggies, but nice to haves won't hold up a beta release once the other stuff is done.

Zerabane

really love this new info update, really informative. gives a tonne of context the work you are putting in <3

Victory

We are getting so close, thank you Naughty Road and all the beta testers for their hard work! Looking forward to doing a full play-through and enjoying the new chapter soon!

Corbul

Are we there yet? *that annoying kid is back again!*
