On Erdogan's World and the revolt against it

Historian Djene Bajalan joins George and Alex to review the past month – ceasefires in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, winning and losing US patronage, Trump's inconsistent strategy and leaks, and the gold rush. We then turn to a country exemplary of the contradictions of the end of the End of History: Türkiye. And finish by answering your questions and comments on internationalism, free speech, Die Linke, anti-immigration, and domination.

What's driving the protests and how do they compare to past revolts against Erdogan?

What is the meaning of charges – corruption & terrorism – against Istanbul mayor and potential opposition leader İmamoğlu?

Who is the opposition?

What has sustained Erdogan's rule – repression, conservatism, modernisation, growth?

Why is Erdogan one of the winners of the past 20 years, and how is he a world-historic figure?

That was some truly impressive gobbledygook doublethink on Ukraine. Apparently the vast resources of American imperium are not enough to stop Russia's advance and we should stop throwing money and men into a black hole. Oh wait actually Russia is a paper tiger and they would be eaten alive by Poland if they ever bother to get out of bed. This is, by the way, the reason why this war will never end. Every single member of the "deep state" (which your guest is apparently in regular contact with) has exactly these same delusions.

Jensen Suther has an excellent Hegelian critique of the psychoanalytic logic of lack and desire that has become popular among some "Marxists". A good pretext to have him back on I think. Alienation is good now. That's how you know the Marxist project is fucked when people calling themselves Marxists espouse this sophistry. Lacanian psychoanalysis has truly become a hot take machine on the internet. You can't count the number of mind bendingly stupid comments Zizek and McGowan especially have been making about the Ukraine Russia conflict using psychoanalysis. It would be funny if it wasn't being taken seriously by otherwise intelligent substackers and podcasters. And if you criticise it you're guilty of disavowal, you'll be told to read Freud on negation or to embrace the lack at the heart of your desire. Against this kind of cultish circularity, sometimes the only healthy answer is simply, fuck off. The only therapy is collective action.

"I can't wait to get out of [the EU], if I'm honest. I think we'll be far better out of the bloody thing. In every aspect. Football-wise as well, absolutely. To hell with the rest of the world." -Neil Warnock, 2019

I think the idea that we can hold Vance to account over the issue of free speech is naive delusion at best. You said that the left has transitioned away from sometimes hypocritical support of free speech to outright schmittianism. Maybe that’s true, but if that’s right then the right has been fully schmittian this whole time. There will be no defense of free speech from Vance that isn’t carefully procured from his end of the aisle. His view is clear: he doesn’t care about free speech, he won, now you have to deal with him.
