We celebrate 500 episodes of Aufhebunga Bunga with a cold, hard look at the decay around us.

Alex and George plus contributing editors Lee Jones and Alex Gourevitch wrangle with four principal questions:

What does it mean to say our era is one of decay or decline?

How does this relate to the non-death of neoliberalism – its intellectual destitution, its practical weakening, but also its mutation and perpetuation?

How does neoliberal decay relate to the decline of a unipolar world under total US hegemony, and the decline of the liberal globalist order?

To what extent is the decay of representative democracy cause or consequence of the above?

And finally, as we have been asking since we started this podcast in 2017: what comes next?

Sorry, what's the big deal about OBBB? Am I just missing what it does besides shuffling a lot of money around like the IRA did?

Serious response: I'd appreciate if Bunga could maybe do a miniseries or reading-club segment on the concept of the "cartel party" (https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/perspectives-on-politics/article/cartel-party-thesis-a-restatement/458996C30EF168AF3A13A3134AA1ACCE). While the original Cartel Party thesis was about parties using the state to suppress electoral competition, Alex H's insights in this episode point to a role for deliberately-stoked culture war in maintaining cartel control over claims to represent large social bases.

I really liked Alex G‘s comparison of how Trump 2025 totally debunks Obama‘s hollow claim that he couldn’t do anything 2009. However it has to be said that Trump is standing on the shoulders of decades of packing the courts with ultraright activists, most notably of course Scotus. (Which is another thing Obama messed up of course.) We don’t know (yet) what Trump will do when they cross him.

Very good episode, but I can't have been the only person hoping for a Phil comeback...

I hate to throw around accusations of Eurocentrism, but I do think it is important to remember that large portions of the world do not see their lives as declining and particularly not as decaying, but rather as improving in the long term. It might we worth grappling with that as much as it is worth grappling with decline or decay in the west. Even countries facing short term issues or even some degree of stagnation (ie: Chinas still robust but slowly declining year over year growth rates) appear to have very different outlooks and it’s certainly worth asking why imo

Am I the only one that stumbled over the bit in the quote from Phil's article read out by George about the NHS advertising its services in foreign languages? Anyone living in Britain, please enlighten us and tell us what's the big deal

At around minute 40 Alex gives a neat summary of how to periodize neoliberalism. Any suggestions on an academic source to quote this from? Who's written this down succinctly?

Also, why are you guys so hard on graffiti? Episode 500 and the bungas have well and truly arrived in middle age
