On the brave new world we have entered.

Historian Arash Azizi is back on the pod, talking to Alex H and Lee Jones about the ongoing war. We try to draw out some firm consequences, beyond the immediate situtation.

Why did Trump go to war?

Is this Netanyahu's war? And will he continue it regardless of the US?

Will the Islamic Republic become more conservative now?

What has the war revealed about asymmetric warfare? About US vulnerability?

What is the state of the Hormuz weapon now?

I also believe that de-risking is a key theme for this year. Financially, logistically, militarily. Somewhat speculative but curious to hear if someone has more insight on what shape this could take.

America’s worst defeat since Vietnam? Is this a serious statement?

It felt like Lee was suffering from a small case of NOBS. I guess it remains to be seen the full effect of this war will be on the US.

Ok, a serious comment to add to the discussion: Netanyahu has a messiah complex. I'm not sure how much of the written material on this is available in English or outside the Israel Follower narrowcast, but it's a major driver behind his behavior. He has believed in attacking Iran for almost as long as Trump, since the 90s at least, and as age catches up with him and his coalition options have narrowed, he has been pressuring himself to check off all his goals. Since 7/10/2023 he's grown desperate. Hell, if you checked I24 news in Hebrew when the war started, they were reading off picket signs and tweets accusing Netanyahu of starting the war just to bolster his election chances, since this year will be 4 years and the Knesset must have mandatory elections this October.

Strategic defeat as in Tet Offensive — granted. As for Vietnam as a whole would be a crucial categorical error, this story is not even over. Just today the UAE left OPEC..... Azizi will be back in 2027. But more interesting: given Lee's "lessons learned" and his assessment of this as a catastrophic American defeat, what should we make of this for China–Taiwan? Does it increase the risk of military action to reincorporate Taiwan — i.e., US imperial decline, limits of American power, vulnerability of ships, lack of military-industrial base and munitions depth, etc.? Or decrease it, as a case study showing that a willing, well-prepared, and industrialized state can fend off a nominally much stronger opponent by blocking shipping lanes and forcing a standoff? Or will the CCP be willing to accept huge losses in human life to take the island by force — and is this exactly the difference vis-à-vis the USA and the Strait of Hormuz, where the American public is not really in the mood to accept thousands of dead?
