We start off by discussing the beheading of a French teacher for having shown his pupils the Mohammed cartoons in a class on free speech. Then we discuss your points, questions and criticisms from September and October (on class politics, antifa, Covid, unemployment and more). Finally, 25 minutes of bonus content from our chat with Sontag biographer Benjamin Moser on the 1619 Project, identity politics, literature, and cosmopolitanism and empire.

Social media platforms need not be socially owned to have democratized media production. I’m speaking relatively. And I think you’re overestimating the ability of their corporate owners to control the discourse happening on their platforms. The owners and management of Facebook are Silicon Valley Democrats, yet look at what that platform has turned into, to their chagrin. What I’m getting at is social media’s ability to spread conflicting ideological interpretations of real events. This summer social media posts convinced half the US (the world?) that American police regularly kill unarmed black men. I only see this fracturing getting worse, possibly to the point of disaster. And I’ve never read Baudrillard, ... I don’t need no frog to come up with my half baked theories

Thanks Alex for the commentary on the terrorist attack. I just want to add that it wasn't only the liberals that betrayed the right to free speech but there was a horrible article in jacobin that used the attack on Charlie Hebdo to warn against islamophobia. I hope we don t see this kind of takes this time from other leftists.

Much appreciation for the response guys!

Re: Antifascism: I'm curious how you'd think about the one country in the world that seems to have actual organized fascism rn, Greece. Give the most recent Jacobin pod a listen, they had on a lawyer from the recent court case there. In that case 'antifascism' provided a basis for mass popular organization against Golden Dawn, and that's very good even if the politics are 'defined negatively' or whatever. This is a group that violently attacks immigrants, unionists, socialists with collaboration of the state. IMO pressuring the bourgeois state to smash such a group is v good

Fairly new patreon here. How can I submit a question?

I suppose with the comments on the pod about the killing in France but don’t quite agree with the criticism of the Jacobin article. Yes, it should be obvious that the correct response to an incident such as this is to condemn it absolutely—there’s no moral conundrum here. At the same time I see a kind of racism in the failure to condemn it—as if slaughtering people “is something that Muslims just happen to do occasionally, we just have to put up with it.” And in the French context there _is_ an attempt to use this incident to ratchet up pressure on Muslims over unrelated issues, as if there were some logical connection between wearing a headscarf and murdering somebody. “Classical liberals” and Islamists have a nice racket of mutual complicity going where they can both keep escalating against each other while accusing the other side of being essentially intolerant.

Sensible Captain

Agree so much with George on „there is no non-liberal antifascism, because there is no fascism“.
