On the 'war communism' solutionAs we enter the second year of the Covid-19 pandemic and its attendant turmoil, suffering and lockdown, inevitably the search for systemic causes and systemic responses grows more intense. Swedish ecologist and social theorist Andreas Malm joins us to discuss one possible response - a crisis communism modelled on the War Communism of early Soviet rule, as discussed in his new book ‘Corona, Climate Chronic Emergency: War Communism in the Twenty First Century.’ We discuss the nature of our contemporary crises, and how far the left needs its own distinctive form of emergency politics. Readings:

“To Halt Climate Change, We Need an Ecological Leninism”, Jacobin interview with Andreas Malm

Nature Defends Itself, Dayton Martindale, Boston Review

The idea that capitalism can't handle decarbonization has to be one of the worst cliches on the left. Have people been living under a rock for the last five years? It's really necessary to actually read up on mainstream climate science and policy before engaging in this discussion. The emissions scenarios that prior business-as-usual models were based on have already been ruled out by technological change and market forces, before factoring in the fairly drastic climate policies committed to by governments around the world in recent years. Far from being a threat to capital, decarbonization is a potentially convenient solution to both the problems of overcapacity and ideological legitimation. Will warming be limited to less than 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels? Probably not. But on its own climate change is not going to lead to civilizational collapse or fulfill the latest judgement day fantasy of Marxist millenarianism. I realize that some level of millenarianism is baked into socialist politics, but what a degraded and uninspiring version this is! Instead of "socialism or barbarism," the appeal is supposed to be "let's make revolution so that in 30 years global average temperatures will be .2 degrees cooler." Might inspire some Swedish eco-terrorists or something, but I'm going to go ahead and predict this is all incidental to class struggle.

The all new Leftism™ 2021- now working class optional! Tired of pretending like you care what working people want? Now you don’t have to! Just tell everyone were all gonna die if we dont do what you say. People will be so busy not wanting to die they wont have time to care about the working class.

Sensible Captain

Andreas Malm represents a lot of the conformism and regression in the left today, so the only reason I could imagine you having him on the show was to grill him over his social analysis-free emergency environmentalism and appropriation of radical chic pseudo- (actually anti-) Leninism. Malm's repeated calls for "doing something now!" is not only pure anti-intellectualism, but implies a moral schedule he sees himself and his German climate activist camp allies fulfil. None of that has anything to do with Leninism or Bolshevism. Not once does he even allude to the necessity of mass democratic worker organisations overthrowing the state. - quite the contrary, Malm just wants a 'more powerful' state and state institutions regulating emissions. That's why he circumvented both Alex's and Philip's important questions about mass democracy: Malm is not a big fan of that idea. Especially the working class as a historical agent is very suspicious to him - he prefers "grassroots democratic movements", i.e. cross class resistence. He is the Asad Haider of climate activism. The ironic thing is he wants to be seen as a 'Leninist', when his position radiates a authoritarian streak of 'leftist' discourse which is always on the 'correct' side of the Schmittian friend-foe paradigm. His activism reductionism and hostility to thought is more akin to the early Stalinist solution where you can have all the violence and authoritarianism you need to "overthrow the existing order" - without worker democracy. But as with anything or anyone I vehemently oppose, I guess one must read them as a symptom of something deeper: the rotten state of the official radical left.

Of course liberals are 'excited' about solar panels and fighting climate change, they have to be. That veneer of positive propaganda is like, what they're for. That capital can actually navigate the Capitalocene, well - do you really want to wait to find out? We already know that capital can't/won't/hasn't built the nuclear infrastructure necessary for a de-fossilized energy grid. We also know intermittent power sources like solar/wind/tidal can't and will never be able to satisfy baseload in anything resembling a contemporary power grid mix - not without regular brownouts and rationing anyways. We also know every country missed its paris accord targets - perhaps there is some kind of political-economical explanation for this? We also know that the stakes aren't 'slightly cooler global temperatures in a few decades', but the survival of anything resembling a civilizational project. You guys are falling for myopic selective stats aggregation on the level of Stephen Pinker. Of course capital is eliminating poverty, when you define it as a static abstraction. Of course capitalism can make a climate energy grid transfer - when all you look at is the declining price of solar panels. We're getting climate-wartime command economies - this isn't optional, it's going to happen, and it's being tested with the covid response as we speak. It's not going to be pretty or nice or good, and it certainly won't be communist, but it's going to happen. It's not like any kind of class power transfer or storming of the winter palace is a conceivable outcome of the current state of affairs.
