Thanks for this three articles episode. I think on the topic of the lockdowns it would be wrong for the left to demand an immediate end of it even if lockdowns are harming more than helping because of their half hearted nature. I don´t believe that giving in to business associations and fully opening is the healthyest or smartest way to take accountable for the inability of european governments to react properly to a pandemic. Until people get vaccinated social distance and hygene habits are the proven way of combating this kind of epidemic it should not be a leftist priority to open up schools and send everyone back to their respective workplaces although I must admit people never stopped going to work.

Just two small things: During the pandemic, Japan may not have installed bigger lockdowns (the government said in an official paper: "We don't want European-style city closures"), but it has *completely shut down its borders* to over 220 countries. Even Japanese people abroad at the beginning of the shutdown in February 2020 could not go back to Japan until September. Exchange students are stranded. And this politics is deeply rooted in (traditional) Japanese mistrust in the 'hygiene standards' of non-Japanese. Which is total bollocks - this cult of Japanese cleanliness is really just this, a cult. So 'unscathed' for the most part, because 'we keep the gaijin out'. Just as a reminder that a kind of hygiene racism very much exists there.

Thanks for this one, just out of interest since I haven't read the book: does Bickerton draw from Gilles Châtelet with his notion of "techno-populism"? Because he writes about it as early as 1998.
