On the long history of involuntary celibates.

Alex Gendler talks to us about his essay in American Affairs, "The New Superfluous Men". With growing global concern about incels and increasing anti-terrorism focus on the supposed risks posed by lonely, angry men, we discuss why this discussion has emerged today and why it's gone global.

Why do our societies seem no longer to find use for young men? Do they benefit from patriarchy? And how does this all relate to class?

This is a really interesting argument. It raises a point that was pretty widespread in postwar anthropology and I think became very unfashionable after Foucault—that systems of power and authority, like patriarchy, are primarily symbolic. So you get these massive rituals of power that on some level are basically extremely elaborated mating displays.

What I'm getting from this episode is that I need to divorce my wife and start sowing some wild oats now that I'm a 30-something, sexually skilled urban homeowner with a career that's going places. And the fact that in other terms I'm a PhD student in computers will somehow work in my favor now.

Wonder how the 68'ers fit into this equation, simultaneously growing up in the era of postwar prosperity but also being opposed to monogamy.

So pushing this further, was the revolutionary wave of the early 20th century caused by the mass politicisation of incels?

Very interesting. Anyhow I would question the idealized picture of hunter-gathers that emerges from the conversation. Also on this, a idealized notion of prehistorical times + hate of metropolitan life, theatre and fashion was at the base of Rousseau’s project. Was he the ur-incel? (A proof of this might be that the internet platform of the Italian Movimento 5 Stelle, definetly a incel party, is called “Rousseau”).

A sudden spike in dodgy puns and jokes on this episode - “Khan do attitude” was particularly bad 😂 I can only surmise that habitually Phil reins you two in on that front ?

Khan do attitude is exactly the type of content I come here for
