The Democrats use less prison labor because they're more closely tied to white-collar industries, was my POV. When I was talking about "choosing their nationality", I meant the *Russian* middle-class choosing its own nationality -- as Alex understood it. And take the name NIPS in good health, as it used to be the name of a conference in my field until people decided it was misogynist.

The left can’t be the ruling class because it’s not a class. A class is defined by its relation to the means of production, and the ruling class is the class that appropriates the surplus value produced by the labouring class. In capitalism that’s the bourgeoisie, not the PMC or the middle class or whoever. Yeah it’s theoretically boring and unsexy, but capitalists are still the ruling class, and the accumulation of capital is still the name of the game. All of this is obviously basic for a Marxist, but is nevertheless what identitarianism functioning as bourgeois liberal ideology works to obscure. Guys, come on, don’t fall for it 😜

SRT is just another sad parody of 1930s popular frontism / Stalinism. Neither is it a theory or Marxist (sorry Alex), both of which it claims. The processes governing the reproduction of labour are pretty much irrelevant to Marx’s Capital - which if they had troubled themselves to read is an analysis of the production and accumulation of surplus value.

The WEF is literally just a TED conference for oligarchs, it has no executive power at all. Thinking that the WEF is steering the global economy is the equivalent of thinking that the Bolshevik revolution was planned by Café Central in Vienna because it was Trotsky and Stalin's favorite bar. The reason that you have Schwab talking about all these grandiose plans of global transformation is that at the end of the day he's just another grifter, he wants to be taken seriously by the groups that actually control the global economy.

The Zuckerberg land acknowledgement line really confused me. I don't work at Facebook but based on my current job and looking at tech, that is something likely decided by a small culture of comms people, who don't even know why they're doing this and just suggested it to him as a means of appealing to the workers at Facebook. Do the people at Facebook want that? I have no idea. (again based on my own job and peers, a small minority probably like that and most don't care). Still I only mention this cause it's weird that would be used to state that "the left" holds power, it's a facile element of the actual power Facebook holds in society. Seems like another example of the left's lack of power, idk. I'll say the point about there being a smaller gap between the CEO and certain middle management in 2022 feels much more real.

Alex is right about Elena and Joshua generally. Elena does herself a disservice with the nastiest. On analytic terms, she does have a good take on social reproduction on the her substack blog.

"Kant wanted to prove, in a way that would dumbfound the Common Man, that the Common Man was right: that was the secret joke of his soul. He wrote against the scholars in favor of popular prejudice, but for scholars, and not popularly”.
