On shared-labour socialism.

[Patreon Exclusive]

We continue our discussion, looking at what is behind "bullshit jobs" in the global North and the absence of jobs in the global South; debate whether "shared-labour socialism" would involve commune living; and try to unpick the trickiest aspect of all this: how to distribute the work that is necessary, requires specialisation, and which is unpleasant – for example, mining.Readings:

Post-Work Socialism?, Alex Gourevitch, Catalyst

Why your flights keep getting cancelled, Daniel Zamora Vargas, New Statesman

Oh boy, socialists and communists as last defenders of a properly bourgeois work-ethic, versus the bourgeois post-work ethic of bullshit job-making. Very dialectical, that.

Really great discussion. I especially appreciate Gourevitch problematizing efficiency. Would love to hear more discussions that take seriously problems related to consumption, luxury, and waste.

Great interview, love Gourevitch’s take on labour republicanism. Somewhat unrelated - maybe tangentially related - but I wish you guys would do a proper episode on the rise of the logistics industry and the potential power of workers in that sector sooner or later. I could be wrong but I believe Amazon recently overtook Walmart as the leading employer the US. I think this warrants some serious discussion especially as it challenges the notion that workers in developed capitalist countries have become predominantly PMC-ified office workers.
