On the missed opportunity of the 2010s.

[Patreon Exclusive]

Chris Cutrone of Platypus joins us to talk about his collection of essays, The Death of the Millennial Left. We discuss:

Why define it as the "Millennial" Left?

Was the anti-Stalinism of leaderless protests a good thing?

Did the talk of "winning" from 2015 onwards represent maturity?

Should the turn to a more public, statist capitalism make us more optimistic?

How will the 'lawfare' used against Trump play out?

I enjoyed everything in here overall but if the basic building block of upcoming capitalist politics is lawfare I'm going to pull my fucking hair out.

Racism and sexim are cultural features of American capitalism, a modern inheritance if you will. Some in society feel they are the most important determinants of their outcomes, some would be correct in saying this. The idea that "we thought we dealt with it" regarding racism begs the question what "we" are we talking about..black Americans at large do not believe the issue of Racism has been "dealt" with.

Good interview. I’ve sensed some mutual antagonism in the past, so I’m glad to see an exchange between Cutrone and bunga

Good discussion but it might have been better to presume that most listeners have already made at least several visits to "the Cutrone Zone" and try to push CC onto some more unfamiliar territory (a lot of this resembled his Rodgers/McAfee visits to Doug Lain). I was also struck, more than with a lot of American guests, by the still-significant cultural disconnect (two countries divided by a common language, etc.).

Yes, this was good, but if you follow Cutrone around a bit of a rehash of his usual material. I would have liked more of a battle of ideas rather than letting Cutrone talk endlessly. For example, both Phil and Cutrone have self titled themselves "the last Marxist" so it would have been good to see that being resolved in the episode.

This has been a great episode but my one quibble is I object to the idea that the BLM protests were leaderless (at least in the US). It absolutely had leaders in the form of activists, intellectuals, financiers, institutions and partisan backing. It was arguably aimless, but there was absolutely a leadership, albeit one of NGO hucksters, democratic party apparatchiks and corporate donors (I'm not sure it was totally aimless either, much of it functionally ended up as a tool to prop up a certain faction of the democratic party)
