chinese characters (Hanja) were used in ancient korea, then they created korean symbols / alphabets to replace chinese characters in everyday use, so most basic korean words are based off of chinese words but it's less common and considered more academic to know a lot of chinese characters , but most koreans know some (i know chinese and a korean learner, natives can correct me if i'm far off!)
