In the glittering heart of New Eridu, where the neon lights of Sixth Street bled into the shadowed alleys of the Outer Ring, Astra Yao's life was a carefully orchestrated symphony. As the undisputed Queen of Pop, her days were filled with rehearsals, fan meets, and the occasional sneaky adventure that her manager and closest confidante Evelyn Chevalier would inevitably drag her back from.
Astra was, by all accounts, a hapless bundle of energy off-stage. Bubbly, wide-eyed, and perpetually excited about the smallest things, like a new flavor of noodles at Howl's or spotting a rare Bangboo on the Inter-Knot. She relied on Eve for everything: scheduling, navigation through the city's chaotic traffic, and even deciding what to wear when the choices overwhelmed her. "Eve~ you're the best!" she'd say, clinging to the taller woman's arm with that trademark pout that could melt even the sternest resolve.
Evelyn, on the other hand, was the shadow to Astra's light. Cool, composed, with lavender eyes that missed nothing and a past shrouded in secrets from "the Organization." She had once been sent to undermine Astra, but the star's genuine kindness had shattered her mission and her old self. Now, Evelyn lived for one purpose: protecting her. No one got close without her approval. No risk went unchecked.
It started on a quiet afternoon in their shared penthouse overlooking Lumina Square. Astra was lounging on the couch, legs kicked up, scrolling through her phone with a half eaten box of interstellar donuts beside her. Evelyn was at the kitchen counter, reviewing the day's schedule with her usual precision.
Ping.
A notification popped up on Astra's screen an direct message from an account she didn't recognize. Normally, all invitations, endorsements, and gig offers went through Evelyn's filtered channels. Fans knew better than to DM the star directly; Odeum HAE's security was ironclad. But this one slipped through somehow.
"Eve! Eve, come look at this!" Astra bounced up, waving her phone like it was a golden ticket. Her eyes sparkled with that familiar excitement, the kind that usually preceded an impromptu escape plan.
Evelyn set down her tablet and approached, her expression neutral but alert. "Astra, you know you're not supposed to open unknown messages. Let me see."
Astra pouted, holding the phone just out of reach at first playful as always before handing it over. "But it's super exciting! Look!"
The message was from the owner of "Thunderhub," a legendary pub tucked away in the fringes of the Outer Ring, near the Hollow borders. It was infamous: a haven for bikers, mercenaries, and the rougher crowds who thrived on the edge of New Eridu's lawless zones. The kind of place where Ethereals whispered in the vents and the music shook the foundations.
Dear Astra Yao,
We've been fans of your voice for years. It cuts through the noise like a blade. We're hosting a special night at Thunderhub—raw, real, no corporate gloss. One performance. You, unfiltered. The crowd here... they'll worship you. Midnight slot. Come alone if you want, but bring that fire. Payment in Dennies or favors—your call.
—Razor Jack, Thunderhub Proprietor
Evelyn's eyes narrowed as she scanned it. No official headers, no agent routing. The sender's profile was a blurry photo of a chrome-plated motorcycle under flickering neon. "This is unscheduled. And suspicious. Thunderhub isn't on any approved venue list. It's in a high-risk zone gang activity, Hollow proximity. Absolutely not."
Astra's face fell for a split second, but then she lit up again, clasping her hands together in that adorable begging pose she knew worked wonders. "Eve~ please? It's just one night! A famous pub! Think about it performing for a whole new crowd! My songs could reach people who never get to see the big stages. And it's an invitation just for me! That means they really want me, not the Odeum version."
Evelyn crossed her arms, unmoved. "Astra, need I remind you of the last 'exciting' detour? The one that ended with us evading PubSec drones?"
"That was fun, though!" Astra giggled, then switched tactics tilting her head, widening her eyes, and hugging Evelyn's arm. "Pretty please, Eve? With extra sparkles on top? I'll be good! I'll stick right by you the whole time! No sneaking off, promise!"
Evelyn sighed, feeling her resolve crack under the onslaught of cuteness. Astra knew exactly how to wield that weapon. It was unfair, really. "You're impossible."
"Does that mean yes~?" Astra beamed, bouncing on her toes.
A long pause. Evelyn scanned the message again, her instincts screaming trap. But Astra's excitement was genuine, and denying her these little joys felt... wrong. "Fine. On one condition: I drive. I scout the venue first. If anything seems even slightly fishy crowd, staff, vibes we leave immediately. No arguments."
Astra squealed, throwing her arms around Evelyn in a tight hug. "Yay! Thank you, Eve! You're the absolute best! This is gonna be amazing!"
Evelyn allowed herself a small, rare smile, patting Astra's back. "Just... stay close to me, alright?"
The drive to the Outer Ring was tense for Evelyn, exhilarating for Astra. The city lights faded into grittier neon signs for bangboo repairs, black-market W-Engines, and pubs with names like "Hollow's Bite." Evelyn's sleek black car cut through the traffic like a shadow, her hands steady on the wheel.
"Look at all the bikes!" Astra pressed her face to the window as they approached Thunderhub. The pub was a massive converted warehouse, chrome harleys lined up outside like a metal herd. Engines revved in greeting as they parked. The air smelled of oil, smoke, and something electric Ether residue, perhaps.
The crowd outside was nothing like Astra's usual fans. No glowing lightsticks or cute banners. These were punks in leather jackets, scarred mercenaries with cybernetic implants, bikers with tattoos snaking up their arms. Chains, spikes, and attitudes that could curdle milk. But when they spotted Astra stepping out in her signature white dress flowing, ethereal, with subtle star motifs they parted like a sea.
"Is that... the Queen herself?"
"No way she came here..."
Cheers erupted, rough and raw. "Astra! Sing for us, star girl!"
Astra waved happily, blowing kisses. "Hi everyone! I'm so excited to be here!"
Evelyn stayed glued to her side, hand subtly near her concealed blade. Something felt off—the way eyes lingered too long, the low murmurs. But the owner, Razor Jack—a burly man with a mohawk and a grin full of metal teeth—greeted them warmly. "Welcome to the real New Eridu, sweetheart.
Stage is yours. Backstage room's prepped for ya."
The performance started strong. Astra took the stage under harsh spotlights, microphone in hand. Her voice soared pure, uplifting, the kind that made Hollow raiders weep in private. But the crowd... they cheered, alright. Hoots, whistles, stomps that shook the floor. Yet their energy was different. Hungry. Primal. Not the adoring warmth of her Astranauts, but something feral, like wolves circling a flame.
Astra felt it midway through her second song. A strange haze in her mind, like the air was thicker. Her movements felt heavier, then lighter too light. The cheers blurred into a roar that echoed in her skull. She powered through, smiling brightly, but by the end, sweat beaded on her forehead not just from exertion.
"Great job, everyone! Thank you!" She bowed, waving as she slipped backstage for a quick breather. "Whew... that was intense."
Evelyn was waiting in the wings, concern etching her features. "Ms. Yao, are you alright? The crowd—"
"I'm fine, Eve! Just need a minute alone to relax. Go grab a drink or something? I'll be quick!"
Against her better judgment, Evelyn nodded. "Five minutes. Then we're out if needed."
The backstage room was dim, cluttered with old amps and posters of forgotten bands. Astra collapsed onto a worn couch, fanning herself. "Wow... those fans are wild. Kinda fun, though..."
Then, the speakers crackled to life. No one had touched them. A low, throbbing bassline seeped in not her playlist. It was heavy, distorted, laced with subliminal pulses that vibrated through the floor and into her bones. Ethereal whispers hidden in the mix, Hollow-tainted frequencies designed to rewrite.
Astra's eyes widened, then glazed over. Swirls danced in her pupils—@@ spiraling like corrupted code in a Bangboo's optics.
Thump. Thump.
The beat synced with her heartbeat.
Feel the road. The freedom. The power. No more chains. No more pretty cages.
Her head lolled back. Memories flickered Astra's pure smiles, Evelyn's protective gaze but they distorted. Faded. Overwritten by adrenaline, chrome, leather, the roar of engines.
She stood slowly, trance like, approaching the full-length mirror propped against the wall. Her reflection stared back: the old Astra, in her pristine white dress, hair perfectly styled.
A wild, uncharacteristic grin split her face. Feral. Thrilling.
"Time for a change~"
Her hands moved on their own at first, then with eager purpose. She grabbed a makeup kit left on the table someone's forgotten stash, heavy on the dark side. Black lipstick smeared across her lips, thick and glossy. Eyeliner winged sharp as knives. Blush replaced with smoky shadows that made her eyes smolder.
Her fingers tore at the white dress ripping the hem into jagged edges, exposing more skin. She shrugged off the flowing sleeves, fashioning a cropped top that hugged tight. From a nearby rack of "stage props" (conveniently placed, almost waiting), she snatched a black leather crop jacket studded, worn, perfect. Zipped it halfway, letting it hang loose over the torn fabric.
Hair? She ruffled it wildly, teasing it into a messy, windswept cascade that screamed rebellion.
The mirror reflected a stranger no, a truer self. Biker queen. Leather and attitude. Black lips curled in a smirk that would make even Caesar's gang nod in approval.
The music swelled, approving.
This new Astra laughed. Low, throaty. Excited.
She burst back onto the stage without warning. The crowd went berserk.
There stood their star, transformed. Torn shirt clinging, leather jacket gleaming under the lights, black lipstick stark against her wild grin. Messy hair whipping as she grabbed the mic.
"Who's ready to ride?!"
The pub exploded. Engines revved outside in echo.
Evelyn, from the bar, froze. Her glass slipped from her hand, shattering. "Ms. Yao... Astra?!"
Astra's new set was chaos incarnate. No ballads. No uplifting anthems. Heavy riffs (somehow the band adapted instantly), lyrics twisted on the fly into tales of open roads, broken rules, the thrill of the Hollow's edge. Her voice still angelic, but edged with gravel, seductive snarls.
The crowd moshed, chanted. Hands reached for her, reverent and rowdy.
Evelyn pushed through, heart pounding. "Astra! Stop this something's wrong!"
Astra's swirled eyes locked on her. That wild smile twisted into mockery. "Eve? Look at you, all stiff and worried. Always holding me back. This is freedom, baby. This is me now."
Evelyn reached the stage edge. "This isn't you! That music it's corrupted! Hollow influence, subliminals—fight it!"
Astra laughed, leaping down with unnatural grace. She sauntered close, finger tracing Evelyn's jaw teasing, cruel. "Fight it? Why? Your little princess act was cute, Eve. But I'm done being your fragile star. Go back to your schedules. I'm riding wild now."
The crowd parted as Astra strode out, hips swaying with new confidence. Outside, a massive motorcycle chrome beast with flaming decals—waited, key in the ignition. As if summoned.
Astra swung a leg over, revving it to life. The engine's roar drowned Evelyn's cries.
"Astra! Wait—please!"
But the biker girl just glanced back, black lips smirking, eyes gleaming with corrupted excitement.
"Catch me if you can, Eve~"
Tires screeched. She shot into the night, taillights vanishing into New Eridu's underbelly.
Evelyn stood there, shattered. The woman she devoted everything to—gone. Twisted into this rebel shadow.
But Evelyn Chevalier didn't break. She clenched her fists, eyes hardening with resolve.
"I'll find you, Astra. And I'll bring you back. No matter what."
In the distance, the winds howled in approval. On the roads tonightone of leather, speed, and a star fallen into darkness.
